Once again, you made magic! You are quite an inspiration. The simplest terrain pieces are always the best. The ones who ground the battlefield in reality.
Very interesting, I would never have thought to use florist wire. I work in a warehouse and we get tons of these plastic and cardboard corner protectors that work great for tents. Only downside is cutting the larger pieces without damaging them.
I finally get home and plan on a couple full days making product....IT IS 31C! (I think I converted that right) normally 21C, I live on the beach in California. So, in Farhenheit, normally in the 70s and with a breeze but is now over 100! So, spending the time just watching your vids and drinking lots of ice tea!
Use blue shop towels for the canvas. They are essentially thick paper towels, that can absorb a ton of liquid and stay strong. They are never patterned, and are nice and flat, like canvas would be already.
This is the fifth or sixth tent instructional I've looked at, and it's the first one that actually looks doable without being fiddly and frustrating. Cheers!
6:35 Love the 'dad joke'. Your vids are awesome for a newbie like me, i have learnt so many neat tricks in a few weeks. I'm going to join your patreon next month.
Nice trick with the Legos bending the wire. You can use pliers, but risk dinging up the wire with the jaws. You can wrap tape over them, but your trick looks much more simple. A bench vise works great with soft-jaws in it, but not everybody has one.
Thanks for these tips. I am making a WWI casualty clearing station railway layout set in 1917. I made some place holder marquess with cardboard and wooden stick frames and used real cotton fabric for canvas. They looked ok but I couldn't get the rounded ends right. I am going to try again with the metal frame you have used and might even try the baby wipes before using the cotton again. I bought 3D printed bell tents. I use a lot of mud and Chinchilla sand for texture.
I'm curious but as you washed the wipes anyway, why not iron them? Should take care of the texture shouldn't it? I bet you could even place a wire under them and iron in some texture to suggest stitching if you wanted to go into those details.
I'm tempted to use cloth from an old shirt or handkerchief as canvas. Years ago I cut up an old paisley tie to use as a saddle cloth for a Mughal elephant and canopy cover for his howdah.
Thanks for the awesome tutorial - gave me plenty of ideas I wouldn't have gotten otherwise and I couldn't help myself but try and get my first tent set up right away.
Wot no ends? I was waiting to see how you dealt with fitting the back panel and the front door flaps, but you didn't! no doubt easy enough to do. If you wanted to fit all guy ropes if you fit a ridge pole you can bring the main guy ropes back across the tent walls so they do not stick out. Used to do that with my old ridge tent! cheers for another great tutorial, warts and all, great stuff! Dave
Great stuff as usual, fun vid as usual, lots of info for making stuff, drove me crazy trying to find out where to get decent bases for my terrain bits. gonna go try that paint over trick on my current and first tent. look forward to more vids stuffed with more info.
Its a "TP Tipi"! :D I like using textured paper for these just to get something to pick up drybrushing or washes. I also sometimes use fabric (had an old bedsheet that was getting thrown out) for a nice canvas texture. I actually quite liked the pattern on your babywipes. But yeah definately avoid anything with teddybears or dinosaurs on it. But the right floral pattern for elven tents can work wonders if you just line it up with purpose.
I followed the steps exactly except I used some super cheap green cloth that I got on clearance from my local fabric store. I find this to look just a little better and you don't have to use up your paint this way.
with floral wire, if you have a craft store, you can get packages of about 20 -24 pieces and in all sorts of gauges. This way you can test them out before you buy a huge lot on ebay.
I wonder if you could put wire nails through the corners of the paper layout and use them to bend the wires around, similar to the way they bend conduit or heater bar steel. It might speed the process up if you need to make multiple units.
Thank you so much I'm new to your channel I'm a diecast car buff 1/64 scale trying to learn about scale dioramas and building sizes and so on 1 to 2 inch models are hard to build lol
Wanted to do this in 1:87with real tent fabric in olive drab. Ironing the edges, and soaking it with diluted woodglue so it wil have a sagging effect. ;))
Sept. 26, 2020----Thanks for the tutorial and showing off your built. Looks realistic. But why not something where a large tarp is used? Also, is there some way of making a dome type tent, but like a tarp tent, use some plastic like Saran Wrap? Make your frame work, then applying a large section of Saran wrap over the frame, holding it in place via white glue? Another large piece of wrap for the interior. This way the frame is still sticking out and you could even have a door?
Hi TT. I'm new to the channel so forgive any footmouths. I haven't been a war gamer for a scarily long time, but I don't understand the purpose here. Very nice job on the tents but what purpose are they in a wargame other than "colour" - surely they're more suited to a diorama or similar. Am I missing something. Cheers and congrats on the 98K subs.
Hey mate, any suggestions on making desert dunes with the “ripple” effect? All the model sand dunes are just brown/yellow smooth hills, kinda boring, it's the undulating ripples of sand that make them look great. Would love to see you try your hand at that.
It's time consuming but you can create ripples by making your dune tops with loo-roll and a glue/water mix...then use a hair dryer and make the ripples!!!
Every time I search for now to make something, Mel shows up in the search and it’s always a damn awesome video.
Once again, you made magic! You are quite an inspiration. The simplest terrain pieces are always the best. The ones who ground the battlefield in reality.
I think it actually looks really cool with that texture, it looks like there is a net laid over the tent. Leave it Mel, looks awesome!
same, i thought it looked like a quilted low-temperature tent. Or even some sort of future tent good for 40k lol
Ooooo... a medieval tent... looking forward to that one!
Very interesting, I would never have thought to use florist wire. I work in a warehouse and we get tons of these plastic and cardboard corner protectors that work great for tents. Only downside is cutting the larger pieces without damaging them.
Beautiful addition as car-ports for the race track, thanks
looking good can certainly see the basics being used in my future civil war tents thanks Mel enjoy the Holiday.
Lol....”don’t be Mel.” Bro you are awesome! Your finished product shows your talent. 👍🏻
So simple and yet so magnificent. Thanks Mel, great video. They look so cool.
Cheers bud

Jammy sod! :-D
Love the over-sized Sports Direct mug in the background. I'm a proud owner of one myself.
My brush mugs increase every Christmas!

That blue paper stuff on a roll?
yep. Its super durable stuff
This is the fifth or sixth tent instructional I've looked at, and it's the first one that actually looks doable without being fiddly and frustrating. Cheers!
Very good idea! The bending of the florist wire with the Legos is ingenious! Greetings from Germany!
Cheers bud

Awesome sauce mate, glad they're helping your hobby!
Looks great. I’m making mine for folks living in the Underhive of Necromunda.

Excellent, been thinking about making some for a while so a very welcome tutorial.

I really like that you do not edit out your mistakes
If I did, how would we both learn? ;-)
I agree with you there

I should have but I forgot lol
love these tutorials! I'd really like to see how you approach some medieval "campaign" type tents with the banners and colors...
We'll be covering those in the medieval series coming up mate
Love your enthusiasm 😊
😊 thank you
I'm tempted to use cloth from an old shirt or handkerchief as canvas. Years ago I cut up an old paisley tie to use as a saddle cloth for a Mughal elephant and canopy cover for his howdah.
That'd work well mate
Thanks for the awesome tutorial - gave me plenty of ideas I wouldn't have gotten otherwise and I couldn't help myself but try and get my first tent set up right away.
Glad you liked it mate

Very informative, I’m off to buy baby wipes. Thanks for your outstanding how-to videos.

Awesome stuff, thanks Mel
I️ actually like the texture on the baby wipes it reminds me of the camo netting you’d cover tents and the like with
I can see that :-)
Looks great as usual. Could be used for any war from the civil war to WWll.
AAAAAAAWWWWWWWEEEEESSSSSSOOOOOMMMMMEEEEEE.
I have been waiting for this. Thank you so much.
Here to help bud :-)
Great tutorial Mel looks awesome
I followed the steps exactly except I used some super cheap green cloth that I got on clearance from my local fabric store. I find this to look just a little better and you don't have to use up your paint this way.
Nice job as always mel!

That's smart, I just as florists and smile sweetly :-D
Not all are as charming as you are!!!
It's gotta be worth a try!
awesome mel! masterful episode once again
Thank you buddy
Useful information, Be using for when I build my roman encampment for a war game cheers
Nice Lego idea!
Mel make some cast end caps to add flaps and close the rear flaps. Will creat an officers tent similar to the one marketed by Britians.
That's smart!
I bet this technique would carry over to making sails for a pirate ship.... may have to give that a try.
Hi Mel, Try the Wilko Cheap Anti bacterial wipes. It has the hessian design on it and it works a treat for your tents, tarps etc
Nice!
I was going to ask about those as I find once you open the Pack they often dry out before you've used them all.
Nice vid and ty for foamboard facts

no mate, paper would just rip
Nice one Mel
Very bad👎👎 chi
@@rbsingh7698 Because?

Clever trick with that lego
Thanks :-)

Have fun!
I love this video, but would like to see how you would make a military tent like the ones used in WW2 or Korea. The M1934 pyramid canvas tent.
Same principles, different substructure mate
SUPERBE ! !! Merci 😉
Awesome tent
Great..!
Million thanks for sharing..
Yeah I don't know man if I was in the military I think I would want teddy bear tents I think that would be the most awesome thing in the world.

Very nice, sorry which kind of acrylic paint do you use?
Thanks
Marvellous 👍👍👍

It's more a flavor/back drop piece mate but I got a lot of requests for it, and thanks!
Thanks TT - I get it now ;) - 99K now woohoo
Looks excellent. It looks better than Baccus 6mm looks
Hey mate, any suggestions on making desert dunes with the “ripple” effect? All the model sand dunes are just brown/yellow smooth hills, kinda boring, it's the undulating ripples of sand that make them look great. Would love to see you try your hand at that.
Work filler with a wet brush mate, takes a bit of practice but it's a good effect
It's time consuming but you can create ripples by making your dune tops with loo-roll and a glue/water mix...then use a hair dryer and make the ripples!!!
38C (I think that is equal to 100 F)
What do you use for the "base" you put the tent on?
I see you use it as a "base" for alot of stuff but can´t figure out what it is please help! :D
Epvc foamboard - Foamex/Palite
Hi Mel
New subscriber here and slowly making my way through your vids. What flock do you recommend to a noob? 👍
Thanks
I thought the textured side of the wipe looked like a good base for cammo netting.
I reckon a bit to dense but with a little pulling, possibly mate
Fantastic
Mel do you think you could make a conical tent with this method?
no reason why not mate
I think the texture makes it look more like canvas.
Looks very good but maybe you should put much less grass inside the tent, but I guess it's an UK's people vice :D
Ah, consider it a fresh pitch mate ;-D
did you ever do the bell tent?
Do you always us a tube of super glue? I’m new to modelling and wondered if it was a cost factor….
I buy the good stuff from cheap shops, so its never been an issue mate
It's Foh-Lee-Ij. Note the three syllables!
:-D
Did you ever start your Jousting series? I'm really interested to see how you would craft a Knights' Tent.
Not yet
Hide the baby wipe pattern with a camo net
Ingenious!
What game is this for
What paint is this?
for Flames of war 15 mm ?
Are tents in the book?
COOL
I want to make for FoW
Can you please make a House ? Or a Farm for napolic 1:72 ? I Like you Videos so mutch !!
just buy 2mtrs of thin plain fabric from your local craft store... makes life a hell of a lot easier to work with...
No front nor back?
Easy to add with the shown techniques mate
The teddy bear ones could be the evil army care bears.
Nergal Terrain. Now with smell!
Oh, come on Mel, what's wrong with some teddy bears?
Are you from Merseyside fella?
Stoke mate
I knew it was Lancashire...nice viddy mate!
Ye. Nice. Ye
This video was.... In-tents....
I see what you did there! lol
Intense?.........Nup, I don't get it.
Good video. Thanks you, but (sorry) too much bla,bla,bla....
What's the matter Darco...your ADHD kicking-in? Can't sit through the words of wisdom?
At least he cuts away when doing a long process like painting; some don't.
Math
Not so interesting
going to make some for my civil war game
