I believe that Irish (Celtic) and African music are the founders of most pop music. The Irish are supposedly the descendants of the fleeing Atlanteans, supernatural beings of beauty, art, knowledge and wisdom. You'd hardly know it with today's lot though; obsessed with materialism, economic and social status, virtue signalling, political apathy and scrutiny, and utter cowardice at the grand theft of our country and covert genocide of our people. They could care less. They care nothing of our culture which they think is 'backward' and beneath them; and the suffering and toiling of our poor ancestors which they think had nothing to do with them and is far behind them. For what died the sons of Róisín... 😥😥☘☘
Red is the Rose that grows in yonder valley, Fair is the lily of the valley, My Mom was my lily of the valley because she was everything, loving , Irish , tough and sentimental. I will always miss her and they sound of her voice , It is all for the loss of my bonny Irish lass that my heart is breaking forever. Til forever comes Mom I love you to the Moon and back. Tom
I didn't know him long, and I didn't know him well. Well enough to see the magic in his eyes and feel the emotion in his song... every time - as luckypenny said, it brings tears to my eyes.
I heard it. When I first saw Clancy Brothers on TV, some 30 years ago. And i full agree (though this isn't one of my favorite Liam Clancy interpretations, his Carrickfergus or The Parting Glass makes a greater impression on me.).
Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. But any budding musician or performer should pause a count of four between the end of a verse and the start of the chorus. I think that the audience were a bit confused by this unanticipated hurry into the chorus each time. They missed it, then felt a bit miffed by it; and then only came weakly back into it towards the end of the chorus. Messy and surprising by such an accomplised and legendary performer like Liam. Otherwise, God bless him and rest him wherever he now abides. He really MADE this song into a classic in its own right, a song which had heretofore been looked down upon as the weak imitation of Loch Lomond, but Clancy and Makem really legitimised it artistically. God rest them now and many thanks to their memory for their ENORMOUS contribution to our (now dying) culture. We thank them for the beauty and happiness they gave us for a long time. ☘☘🙏🙏🙏🇮🇪🇮🇪
What took you TWO months? lol! Yes oleander, sure you are right, Van the Man and the Chieftains use it as intro/bridge on the very lovely song "Celtic RAy" on the Irish Heartbeat album.Thank you!
Soon, or about the same time; the English also began the "Lowland Clearances" Both continued into the 19th century. Meanwhile the Irish were the victims of "Penal laws" against Roman Catholics; which remained until the early 20th century. In the Scots song; the "high road" refers to the king's highway, (paved and a toll) road. The "low road" refers to the "secondary" (free) road He will never stand with his "true love on the banks of Loch Lomond" because he was executed or exiled.
1-4 @arking95 The Irish song is older. It refers to the Battle of the Boyne In 1689, James II attempted to regain his throne from William, Prince of Orange (married to James II's Protestant daughter, Mary) and the English Parliament Many Scots Highlanders fought with the Irish to restore James II (he was also James VII of Scotland) to the throne The Highlanders & the Irish were Roman Catholics James was defeated at the Battle of the Boyne in Northern Ireland on 1 July 1690
3-4 @arking95 The "Young Pretender" (as the English called him) was defeated by William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland (loyal to the German Hanover king of England) at the Battle of Culloden; 16 April 1746. After the battle of Culloden; those captured, were taken to London, tried for treason and hanged. Between the time of the two battles; the English had begun the "Highland Clearances;" that is, the forced displacement of the Highland Scots from their farms. Soon...
Why does Celtic music have such a strong hold on our Southern hearts ? Thank the Lord for giving the Irish such a gift . Angels on high we have heard.

No he didn't. For God's sake. Can't ye just enjoy his voice and not need validation
@@DONAL914
Yes he did. I saw it myself in a Bob Dylan interview.
But I also agree.... Liam doesn't need any validation
Archie Fisher sang this to a packed marquee at Towersey Festival many years ago and that version takes some beating.
