Scarlet Macaw, The Best Pet Parrot?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 21 тра 2021
- Scarlet Macaws are pretty much the mascot for parrots, if parrots were a sports team. They are incredibly iconic, tropical looking, vivid colors, and amazing talkers, but also have quite the fussy personality. Despite being such famous macaws, are they the right parrot for you?

*Wish that were me*
Mine is a brat and always wants cuddles
My girl hates all women, especially fat girls, and will attack if she gets a chance. I've seen her take blood from a pushy girl that got too close. She loves me, though.
Loves to cuddle, talks a lot. Naughty sometimes. Enjoys her quiet solitude in her cage. (bird house or bird condo)
Mines a mix of scarelet and green wing he is sometimes nasty and sometimes nice
Scarlet macaws are so pretty, but something about having a bird that can visit my grave someday weirds me out
I think for me it's the fact that they could put me in the grave a few fingers short that gets me.
@@rachaelbrughelli5873 good thing that's a myth :) look it up and who really lost a finger none and if there's a story there's no proof
@@tyslife1853 idk about scarlets but there are verified instances of a hyacinth macaws doing that level of damage to a zookeeper in a brief altercation
@@tyslife1853 I don’t have documented evidence but the guy who brought his parrot into the avien vet I worked for sure did. He’s a truck driver and takes his macaw on the road with him. A robber broke into the truck while the driver was at a truck stop and had to have several fingers amputated from the damage the driver’s macaw did to him. The owner brought in a clipping of the newspaper story published on the event to show the vet. I wish I’d grabbed a picture of the clipping but I didn’t ever think I’d need it
@@tyslife1853 I own a macaw and while he probably couldn’t put me in a grave, I have scars all up and down my arms from when I used to let him walk on me. So they can do some serious damage.
The first parrots I ever fell in love with were a hyacinth named Puni and a scarlet named Celeste. They were such sweet birds. We were buddies when I was lucky enough to hang out with them, and I've been wanting one since I met them.
Saying that, their person was a VERY experienced parrot owner whose life revolved around his birds. Seeing how much care and time they required helped me understand that no matter how much I loved them, it's hard to give them a good life, and it's cruel to take one on if you're not prepared. They're less like dogs or cats, and more like having a flying, screaming toddler with bolt cutters attached to their faces.
I saw a Scarlet Macaw and was excited to buy one, then I didn't know the difference between the Green Wing macaw and the Scarlett and I bought the Green Wing thinking it was a Scarlett.
1. The Greenwing has such a bigger beak than the Scarlett.
2. They're so much more noisy.
3. They're about the 2nd large macaw species.
4. They're super cool. I love my Greenwing!
You need to see a Greenwing! They're amazing!
Love it :D I’ve seen a macaw that was 102. He was a blue and gold tho but still very impressive!
102 years old?
@@lightofeyezz yep if you take care of em well they can live really long
Actually also they aren't noisy. They don't make alot of noise but they are loud when they do make noise. If you have an apartment I already know someone who lives in an apartment with a blue and gold macaw. I don't necessarily recommend it but if your responsible and know what your getting into. Go for it
The bird shop in my area has a scarlet macaw named trouble. He has been stolen from the store 3 times. And when i was younger. He bit me on my palm, the fleshy part near my thumb. It was incredibly painful.
That is one chill bird with all the movement and noise going on right behind him
When compared to a french bulldog that goes for $4000, has loads of health issues, and lives around 8 years, a macaw that will outlive you for $4500 plus expenses really isn't that bad.
I mean, yes, but remember that you have to factor in the cost of the children that you will have to have to take this parrot on when you're dead.
Lol $4500 is very generous. I have 2 macaws, both would've cost me in total about $16,000+ Easily. I free fly both of mine outside every day and have a large outdoor aviary so im by no means budgeting - but giving them a good life is way more expensive than any dog.
I remember cockatoos were at every local pet store and went for $1200. I just spent $7500 on my umbrella cockatoo after searching for her for months.
@@therealpureessence2437 I disagree. I spend more on my dogs raw food diet then the entire cost of taking care of my umbrella cockatoo. And I also take her to a local aviary so she can free fly ( without worrying about a hawk interfering ), and her cage was $1500.
A French Bulldog is Priceless
What a cute little baby. He looks so young and is so quiet! Too bad they don't stay that quiet and still once they get older!
5:30 baby is falling asleep 🥰
Baby macaw!!! So precious!!
Macaws always look bored with humans. I love them!😂😂😂
Terrific vid. A high maintenance friend for life.
My dream parrots is a couple of scarlet macaw
That beautiful Macaw is 100 times more quiet than my little Quaker!
You have a amazing thing going with Omar's, I haven't been there yet and this makes me want to go even more
That is one chill bird i would be weirded out if one came to my grave as i pass away at age 99 years old i could never hold a macaw because of it's a razor sharp talons and beak i already got scars from other birds
They are such sweet birds when you bond with them, they have to be my favourite 🙃
Love your videos!!! Don't stop, they are very helpful!!
Hopefully we get an eclectus review and a Moluccan cockatoo review too
Definitely plan to when those are available
Yes!ive been waiting for this one.
Oh my God I just discovered this channel you're like Clint's reptiles for birds this is awesome
Great video on the care of one of these gorgeous birds.
So weird.. I was in there Saturday and was hanging with that same macaw. Such a rad bird
Once you get a big bird, you also will have a flying pare of scissors...
Will you please do more review videos on other macaws? 😁
Defnintely!
Hi what a very nice video I know Omar's extoic birds I used to live in southern California my best friend was friends with the owners for many years.yes birds can live a long time.with proper care and diet.yes you are so right about getting bird. When I used to live in southern California I used to love to watch the wild Amazon parrots fly by in the morning time and evening time also.my amazon parrot bonded to me and also my brother in law which most people say they are one person birds.my angel is very quiet bird.To me it doesn't matter if a bird talks what is most importantly they give you unconditional love which is more important than talking you have a wonderful weekend in beautiful southern California
i would feel so bad if i died leaving my bird behind 💀
My scarlet only screams when I have to leave her otherwise she's pretty quite
That is the calmest macaw I have ever seen🤯
Plz do African grey bc lots of people in my country buy them only bc they can talk and neglect them
Definitely will. African Grays are definitely more than most people bargain for
The scarlet is my second favorite after the blue-and-gold. If you cross both, you get something which looks like a rainbow ( catalina macaw ).
Someday I'll own one ( i have experience taming one but can't afford my own ).
P.S. : You will be raiding Costco or other stores for their empty cardboard boxes as toys. Always remove the tape ( choking hazard ). Otherwise pre-made toys cost a fortune. They like the boxes just as much as the $30 toy.
They're amazing birds. I could deal with the size, the cost and even the noise. The deal breaker for me is that beak. 😬
The bird looks like me after I wake up
That bird has been pulling his feathers out.
Great video 🥺. Loved how you pointed out the catch 22 age/experience situation with having a macaw, I think the ideal (but rare) combination is someone in their 30s(sometimes late 20s) who have their shit together that is fully prepared to invest a lifelong bond with their bird, willing to provide the same level of security, enrichment, research, space as it should be like adopting a human child. >__>
Video idea: a Hyacinth Macaw review would be an absolute dream lol. 😣😣😩 And topics like different mutations/colorations would be REALLY interesting. Or just.... ya know, another “Birds are the superior master race” video would never hurt......... :^) Birds are just awesome lol, it is amazing seeing their “thought process” real time. I have pet pigeons (which I think are stereotypically thought of as a ‘stupid/unintelligent’ bird), but their sense of memory and interaction with things is really quite special.
P.S: Bless your muda muda shirt in your merch store, you’re the first avian channel I’ve seen with weeb and *cultured* references, keep on taking over UA-cam man 💪💪💪 Cheers
Oh man I WANT to review a Hyacinth someday. Definitely working towards getting my hands on one. Video on mutations though, good idea! I'll look into it. Definitely will do more reacts down the road, seems most people enjoyed it! Right now breeding season has been in full swing so focusing on bird reviews for now but once things slow down again, will go back to other types of content.
Glad you like the jojo shirt. It's my personal favorite, though most people like the star wars one.
@@Fivesaflock Yee when I saw Omar’s website and that Hyacinth banner and link, it was love at sight lol, hope that means they had one before 🤔
Mutations topic would be so cool, the thought came to me after seeing a few pictures of Lutino and silver blue winged macaws going around looking like a separate bird entity 💀
And I gotta cop that shirt sometime lol, it would be perfect for wearing to conventions once open :^) And making it to Omar’s in person is definitely on my bucket list also. >__> I visit LA regularly for AX (rip this year’s) and never knew the store existed before hearing from your videos - here in NJ and NYC, all the cool aviaries/stores are closed currently ;-; but at least we have bluejays and canadian geese just…fearlessly chilling in the city somehow
this was a great video, i one day want a macaw but could you please do a video about the rose crowned conure? i have one and i could find verry little info on them durring my research. I bassicaly take care of him like you would do with a green cheek conure but i dont know if thats right. also i found on google that they have a average lifespan of 10-15 years wich scares me
You say an older person with the skills would need to arrange placement for the macaw after death....
This is a big point and I wanted to add - what will that persons skill level be?
My aunt left an African Grey. I tried to care for him but... Maaan, I had to rehome him with a bird nerd. I was not prepared for everything that comes with owning a Parrot. He was messy and dander as all get out. He's a pretty bitey bird. I found that as a breed he was a poor choice for my family of three small children.
So yeah, figuring out who will take your Parrot is a bigger head scratcher than it would be for a dog or cat
Can you do a video on Quaker parrots? I need help researching them-
It's clint's reptiles but bird edition! XD that makes it even better!
I'm very interested in getting a scarlet macaw. This vid is SOOOO helpful
Glad it was helpful! They're amazing birds!
@@Fivesaflock🦜🦜🦜🦜🦜💖💖💖✨
When I was a kid I thought Macaws and Parrots were different things, so no, I don't think of a Macaw when I think Parrot
I take it you’re a fan of Clint’s Reptiles
I dont have the room to own one so i just go to the pet store to cuddle the babies 🥰
can you do a review on indian ringnecks and eclectus? ive had birds for a very long time and i’m considering those two
if you do get an Indian Ringneck, get it from a breeder who hand fed & socialized them a lot. They're super awesome to have and sooo loving and cute, but I got mines from someone on Craigslist because they said she was kept in a cage the whole time they owned her. Come to find out, she was completely wild and not from any breeders. So we have a lot of trust/bonding to build, but she's getting used to us after a month or so❤
I think you should add to the list " how smart they are" i have seen a bird do puzzles for food and I wish I knew what that bird was cause thats what I am looking for now
can u plz do african gray
They don't scratch you, my shamrock never does! You just need to train it and know how to handle it. Don't pick a bird for it's talkability, mine says 4 different things, I don't care about this. Pick a parrot you are compatible with.
Could you please do a review on the hahn's macaw thanks!
I was imagining a budgie
Can u do one for african greys?
Can you do an eclectus parrot
If I get a bird the same age as me would it still outlive me?
Can you review the blue and gold macaw? I would really like to know more about them ✨
As much as I would love to have one, I don’t think I could dedicate the time to a bird. It’s a shame, but better than being stuck with something I can’t handle.
You made me think about it and I figured out the image in my head of a "standard parrot" is an Indian ring neck, which is I guess the other candidate to fill that slot.
Can you review pigeons? and also doves? please? I cant find almost any info out there :C
Pls do Hahns Macaws
Yes definitely planning to! Love those birds!
Hey Flocker! I just wanted to say how much I appreciate your informative videos. After careful consideration I put a deposit on a baby Scarlet Macaw at Omar's Exotic Birds. I should be able to bring him/her home in a month. In the meantime I have plenty of bird-proofing to do around the house along with some creative T-perchs to build using Manzanita branches. Yes I did pay for a PCR test to know the sex of the bird. Thanks again for the great information. I especially appreciate the Teflon cookware toxic gas advice video. You very well may have saved my bird's life. Thanks Flocker!!! 👍🦜❤🌈
Congrats on your new bird! Super excited for you!
Nice video please review a Major Mitchell they good parrots.👍
I’m very interested in getting a bird soon! (mostly due to this channel) and I really like Omar’s exotic birds especially
because I have been looking all over the internet and so many “bird stores” are total scams. Only thing is, I live in the Midwest and obviously wouldn’t be able to go pick up the bird from them. Is there any shipping policy for Omar’s exotic birds? I haven’t found anything on their website, but I would love to support such a caring and ethical bird store. I obviously wouldn’t want to get a bird from the equivalent of like a puppy mill. Any comments back or thoughts would be much appreciated, thank you! (Great video btw)
my earlier reply must have glitched and doesnt seem to have stuck. If you are still looking for a bird in the midwest I would try Parrot Stars. they breed and hand wean the birds until they are ready to go home. they are on a pellet diet and are given a variety of fresh foods and sprouts each day. The store is huge on education and wants to make sure you understand the bird and its needs before they send you home with it. you can expect to spend and hour or longer on your visit to get a parrot as they walk you through things. they will help you pick out toys and a cage (if you need one if you already have one you will need proof via photo and size dimensions to make sure its adequate for that species.) they also make sure to send you home with the same diet the bird is eating so there are no issues with diet change. They offer support via phone or in store of you have questions, comments, concerns about anything related about parrots and their care. I called to inquire about a parrot they had and we talked for over a half hour about the bird and I never felt rushed or dissmissed. you can also call after you get a feathered friend if you need anything. they are a little pricey compared to other pet stores around, but they put a lot of work into their birds and it shows. I bought a white bellied caique from them about a month ago and i can tell that this bird was handled and worked with by how quickly he adapted and some skills he already had (like step up, its a little shaky but he is only 6 months old). I would say at if you are still looking for a feathered friend give this place a call to see if its something you are interested in supporting. They might not be Omar's but they do care a lot about their babies and are always willing to chat if you have questions.
Can you do mini macaw aka hahn's macaw ?
This is my dream pet besides a ball python 🥰🥰
Hello. I looked up Omar's exotic birds. Which one do you go to since there are a few?
I go to the Lake Forest one but any of them are great
I have a 15 year old rescue scarlet macaw named Ara. I added her to my flock almost a month ago and she cannot fly. It’s really sad because she can’t get around by herself and just sits on her cage door all day. (Her wings are not clipped.) I’ve been teaching her how to fly by bobbing her up and down on my arm. This has been working but she obviously doesn’t like it. She is slowly climbing the steps to outdoor free flight. After two weeks of training, she no longer bites me, but she isn’t a fan of any other people. I am slowly working that out with her. She’s a wonderful bird and she’s quite the talker! She doesn’t usually scream unless she’s alarmed by something.
She isn’t consistent with stepping-up yet either so I’ve still got plenty of work to do with her. All my birds are rescues, and each of them had problems that needed to be worked around. I am very adopt don’t shop, and discourage purchasing from breeders or pet stores because of the ongoing parrot crisis.
That sounds awesome! How are things going by now? Is she flying?
@@corneliahanimann2173 Ara is getting stronger and stronger! She can fly outdoors if there’s some wind. Indoors she’s a dead weight, but she keeps spreading her wings and trying to fly. I’ve been doing lots of practice with her and she needs lots of encouragement. She gets tired very quickly while doing outdoor flights, so she can’t fly very long. I recently adopted her biological brother who obviously came from the same situation and also cannot fly. I’ve also recently learned their whole rescue story. They were in a rat filled garage for years trapped inside cages with 6 inches of poop. Because of that, they weren’t able to exercise their wings so they lost their ability to fly. Unfortunately due to the cold season, I cannot take them outdoors, but this Spring I plan on doing tons of outdoor flight practice!
What do you think of bourkes parakeets? My local bird shop has one, and she looks like a miniature raptor. I've read a lot about them, and almost everyone agrees they're fantastic pets.
Yeah they're great pets! Interact with one to see if it suits you.
@@Fivesaflock Alrighty, thanks! Its good to know that pretty much everyone agrees that they are sweethearts
Second time asking for kakariki, I really want this bird but I need more help in researching them ☺️☺️
I had one and they’re small but have the personality of a large parrot. Very energetic and needs supervision. They’re really cute and funny though and mine knew a lot of tricks. However mine was a girl so had a problem with laying eggs but that depends on the bird itself and it’s gender
"To see if the scarlet macaw is the best pet reptile for you, we will have to score it based on our five categories which are handilibility, care, hardiness, availability, and upfront costs."
One of my dream bird, I need more moneyyy Lol
I love macaws🦜
Hey can u please do a review on a Indian ringneck. I think it will be very helpful for alot of people
Definitely planning on it. Have its cousin, the Moustache Parakeet, coming up within the next couple weeks!
Yea and I am currently searching for a parrot so would you recommend a Indian ringneck because on paper they look like the ideal parrots they come in great vibrant colors they can talk etc. But then when ppl get them they have bluffing stages and stuff.
Dudeeee I got my Mocaw for free whaaaaaaa
Done
Do a video about senegal parrots
Definitely will!
Hi red macaw
I'm guessing you were inspired by Clint's Reptiles?
not gonna hide it lol. big fan of his
@@Fivesaflock I'm also a big fan of his. Are you going to do a video on the green wing macaw? They're basically just a bigger scarlet macaw.
Yes, definitely planning on it!
Scarlet's are the ultimate parrot. Not true about their lifespan though. 30 years to 50 years is about average for a captive raised Scarlet Macaw. That 60 years to 80 years you hear about online is a myth and it would be like a human being living until 110 years old.
They r very intelligent than dog been owning two handsome macaws...one hyacinth and one scarlet....i have to find them a new owner I know it
My dad usted to cach macas
Can you do one about blue and gold macaws! or at least what are the main differences between the two? From what I read is scarlets are a little bit more nippy but they are prettier but personally I like the look of the blue and gold more. So what’s your opinion of the two which one makes a better pet
Blue Gold Macaws tend to be a bit more friendly generally, but that's not to say they can't be nippy. I would bump them up a score for handling compared to the Scarlet but a lot of my warnings with large parrots still apply. I would say your best bet however is to go to a breeder and interact with both. A parrot that chooses you will always be more friendly than gambling on a parrot you have no experience with.
9:55 dezz nuts
Let us say you have a blue macaw with this one. Do they make much noise? Like screaming.
Macaws in general will make a ton of noise, if not loud.
@@Fivesaflock thanks. Just because i want to compare my situation with you. Du you live in apartment with that macaw, ore you own house? Ask because will my neighburs be angry at me? 🙂
I only borrowed this macaw for the review. If you live in an apartment, I would steer clear away from macaws
rate a "kea".plz
I bet you took inspiration for this thumbnail from Clint’s Reptiles
NO BE MEAN ALLOWED 😡😡😡😡 OKAY
You don't own them, its the other way around.
“I can’t believe it! I _just don’t_ believe it! We’re NEVAH gonna get a hold of that stupid lamp!”
Who are you calling a lamp YOU BETTER TELL ME RIGHT NOW
Scarlet macaws aren't very cuddly. They don't want to be cuddled alot. Some do but most dont
Beautiful, but not really a pet. They could do some real damage with their powerful beaks.
Actually if you take care of your macaw right, they will become your friend or good pets
They are WAY to loud
omars is wayyyyyyy too far. i guess ill have to buy online
there is a nice store in the midwest if thats closer. its called Parrot Stars
Omars always clip their parrots wings-dont recommend the store at all. I recommend the store to not clip them.
Noooooo....
This guy's not my dude for birbs...
Also, he said So. Cal. like a tourist.
Chill, bro...
Pterodactyls need minor vibes.
Gotta forgive me if I say it weird. First generation and all, but I've lived in Socal all my life lol
Wait... did you say this parrot was like a dog with wings?!? I think you should really really educate yourself before you handle a parrot. Don’t expect “skin tearing and blood”. Learn how to handle a bird and don’t try to play with it like a puppy. Birds will warn you before they bite. Educate yourself.
My Blue & Gold Macaw was with Me 22 of Her 23 years. She recently transitioned due to a rare cancer. If You know a Macaw looking for a re-home in central Texas let Me know. ❤️🦜🌈
