I’m a new quilter and having a terrible time getting a straight cut. I end up cutting a lot of fabric away. I have searched EVERYWHERE for a tutorial on cutting. Thank God!! I FOUND YOU! You’re a superb teacher! You don’t rush through things, great camera angle, and you not only explain what you’re doing but WHY you’re doing it. I have to know why I’m doing what I’m doing for it to make sense to me, maybe that’s strange. I’ve always enjoyed when you’re on here but I have to say this is my Favorite! Thank you so much. Thank you!! I hope you do more tutorials on the basics of quilting.

Enjoyed it very much. The first time I took a class on this it was explained so quickly that I thought I'd never figure it out and of course no instructions given. Luckily , my girlfriend had made this quilt and she was nice enough to show me how.. Matt you did an incredible job on this teaching this quilt. I'm new to your site and love, love, love your wife as well. Thanks again for another great class.

Matt is marvelous at two extremely important skills. First, he has an exceptional eye as he chooses fabrics to buy for their shop and to put together in quilt kits. If you’ve never ordered one of their kits, you are really missing something! Second, his cutting is always PERFECT! Jordan Fabrics beats every other store/manufacturer in putting together fabrics in a kit for a beautiful quilt.

I know this video was made 4 years ago but I really appreciated it. Matt is such an excellent teacher and professional when it comes to cutting fabrics. I am a new quilter and you wouldn’t believe how much fabric I have ruined in the cutting process. You make it look so easy and I learned so much. Thank you

At the time of this video, Jordans have been doing this for 40 years! Long may they continue! Really enjoy watching Matt showing us how he works in the studio and Donna when she shows us how to sew the quilt tops, very relaxing and informative. Thanks to you both so much!

Thank you Matt. Because of yours and Donna’s videos I’m more comfortable in cutting fabric. I retired recently and picked up quilting again. 10 plus years since I’ve quilted, and I’ve ordered fabric from your store and have made about 8 quilt tops since January. Haven’t quilted them yet. I found your channel in October of last year and felt the tug again. I will send pics soon, but thank you again.

What the commenters below are missing is that the way Matt and Donna make their videos is unique. They treat the viewer as though they were standing next to them in their shop. That approach is invaluable and the videos contain a lot of detail that'd be missed in fast forwarding. Their videos and precut kits and outstanding email/phone help are better services than any I've found elsewhere.

It is such a delight to watch your tutorials, that I could not go to sleep until 1:30 am in the morning. As I only discovered this amazing and unique tutorial site last night. As I tried my hand on quilting before UA-cam and cellphone internet was available in South Africa, I gave it up for a Bad bad Job. You won't believe me, I still have the baby duvet which I did not finish yet after 15 years. With your tutorials, I can finish it with a cute border and turn it into a doll's cot duvet set for the twins who are now 2 years old.

While I was watching Matt show how he did the cutting and the measurements, (and this is 3 yrs later, so Matt, your awesome way of teaching continues to inspire everyone!) how as the commenter below (thepowderriverfarmer) mentioned that Matt and Donna's videos on UA-cam are indeed UNIQUE. Both Matt & Donna have this uncanny ability to make a viewer believe that Matt and/or Donna are standing right next to you, teaching you the amazing art of quilting. When people like Matt & Donna do these types of videos, it's not only a skill but a love of something that they cherish and want to share with everyone who has the pleasure to watch their creative style of teaching.
Thank you so much for ALL you do, Matt & Donna, you've both taught me soo much!

hi from the UK. just found your tutorials by accident and really loving them. both you and your wife are very meticulous. Cutting and pressing your fabric accurately is probably THE most important step and too many people seem to rush this stage and it makes the construction so much easier. the old rule, "measure twice, cut once" really applies in quilting. i would love my DH to cut everything for me the night before, ready to sew the next day.

Hi MrsGraphiteGal. I'm in the UK, too, and love Matt & Donna's videos. Since I started watching them I think my sewing has improved dramatically. I also have a custom-made ironing board based on the one Matt made. I have my iron and ironing board beside the sewing machine so I can stitch and press. I've improved in my cutting technique, too. I use a weight, but it's only a kilo, so I have to buy a bigger one! Just saying howdy from another fan in the UK!

I am very impressed with the technique and demonstration Matt shared. I too quilt, work in Critical Care ICU, so I am very Obsessive Compulsive. These videos makes one feel as if one was actually standing there viewing the techniques. Awesome work.

Thank you Matt for all your instruction on cutting fabric for quilting. It really helped me because cutting is the one thing I dislike doing out of all the steps of quilting. I know it's because I was lacking the information I needed. You were so clear, and what I really liked, was how you went slowly in the whole process, not just skimming over each step. The camera was excellent for showing each step you did. I really really love the videos you and Donna make. Thank you again.

What a great cutting lesson from Matt Jordon. I am a new quilter and Matt makes cutting seem so easy to get correct. I’m looking forward to cutting a Rail Fence using his technique. Thanks!

Almost 3 years since this was made. I totally and thoroughly enjoyed every minute, very detailed and easy to understand since I am one that needs to have things repeated a few times. What a beautiful quilt, I can't match it with today's fabrics but what an adventure I am going to have searching for just the right fabrics for the quilt I have in mind. Thank you so much, again, I did enjoy your detailed video and instructions. How lucky are you to be able to play and work. (smile) Excited.

Matt, thank you so much for this video. Never realized how important ironing the fabrics is. I’ve been doing that now and realize it’s not to be left out. I would never have thought of using a weight on the end of my ruler and have always wondered how to keep it from shifting. Now I have the confidence I need to cut my fabrics accurately. You and Donna are an amazing couple; I love all of your videos. Wish you guys did more of the Civil War fabric kits. Thanks again for this very informative video.

I CAN SEE ALSO SEWING THE LONG STRIP SETS AND THEN CUTTING AFTER JOINING THE 4 STRIPS, RATHER THAN WORKING WITH PIECES ALL CUT TO SIZE PRIOR TO CUTTING...BUT IF YOU ARE MAKING "KITS" THIS IS GOOD TO GET THEM ALL PRE-CUT TO SIZE. I ALWAYS ENJOY YOU JORDANS, AND YOUR CHOICE OF FABRICS AND PATTERNS! THANKS FOR SHOWING US!

Thanks for your great video about the rail fence quilt and the process of getting the fabrics to cut pieces ready to quilt. It's easy to see that you enjoy your work and are great at fabric selection and precision cutting. I've yet to see one of Jordan Fabrics tutorials that I didn't enjoy and learn something from. And yes, I do feel like I'm right there in the shop.

Very pretty pattern. And beautiful colors. I learned a lot. I'm a novice, so I'm trying to learn everything. I dont have local access to a good fabric store to buy precut kits, so what ever I get, I will have to cut myself. Taking the fabric down to a manageable width is the first step. Thank you.
