What Happens If We Chew Food 32 Times | Benefits of Chewing

  • You may have heard that you must chew your food 32 times.
    Is the number 32 magical?
    Actually, there is no specific number of chews you should have before swallowing the food. The number is just to encourage people to chew the food a lot more than we do.
    To make sure that you chew the food enough, it is important to keep your vegetables crunchy or make sure that they have some texture.
    How many times you chew also depends on the food you are having. Ex. Poha, Upma, Rice are all soft foods that require very little chewing. The same goes for daals, soft rotis, and even vegetables which are cooked in a lot of water. but having said that its STILL IMPORTANT TO CHEW, because it starts an important process of enzymes from saliva being mixed with the food, and it affects fat break down as well as digestion and nutrient absorption of the food you eat.
    Ask yourself this, what have you eaten in the last few days which has required you to chew?
    In the past, you required to chew food more as most of the food was unrefined. Today, it is the opposite, most of the food we eat today is soft.
    Chewing food more is something that you must do actively in the beginning but as time goes by it must become a habit.
    To make a bad habit into a good one you must have Awareness (knowing the benefits of chewing).
    It helps in nutrient absorption, digestion, jaw structure, breathing etc.
    Benefits of chewing food:
    1. Weight loss - when you eat slowly, your brain gives you a signal that you are full.
    2. Breakdown of fats - When you chew slowly, the food is exposed to more saliva. Our saliva has enzymes that enable the breakdown of food.
    3. Improves Gut Health - Chewing more helps your digestive system. Lumps of food are tougher to digest as opposed to small pieces.
