    Michael never indicated that he wanted to be in the mafia There is nothing in the book or any of the drafts of the screenplays that indicate that Michael always wanted to be in the mafia. The book and the screenplays explicitly indicated that Michael never wanted to be in the mafia. That's what makes this a tragic story.

      What I was trying to understand is why he jumped in and took over with such zeal in the Part 1. I guess a sense of responsibility to his family?
      By the end of this movie though I see the disconnect he has from family and a lack of wanting anything to do with them. He even seems to want to spite them.
      I almost think that he got involved trying to help his family then most of them either died or betrayed him.
      I could watch this movie 40 times and still have things to say about Michael and his motivations.

      @@tomcattvreactsI think that of the three sons, Michael was just the more levelheaded and strategic of the three. Sonny was too hotheaded and Fredo was, well……Fredo, lol. Michael never wanted to run the family but it happened so gradually and so naturally that it just made sense. I don’t think he even knew that it was happening until it happened.

      @@tomcattvreacts It's human nature to want to defend his father, even if he had to kill to keep him safe. It may be illegal, but it appeals to Michaels sense of moral justice, that's why he joined the Marines. Michael didn't start to behave like an amoral psychopath who shows no guilt until Apollonia is killed. The emotional/moral blindness and coldness begins when Apollonia is killed. Apollonia represents the death of innocence for Michael because she was innocent. Michael doesn't start to show guilt again until Fredo is murdered, and we see the cutaway to Michael buckling into the chair before he has his flashback to where he remembers that Fredo was the only one who supported him for joining the Marines. Part 2 is the most misinterpreted Godfather movie because Coppola intentionally made it morally ambiguous to demonstrate Michaels moral/emotional blindness. Amoral people love Part 2 because it is the most morally ambiguous of all three Godfather movies. Amoral people will reject civilized behavior to rationalize why Fredo must to die, and they will cheer when Michael slaps Kay for the abortion. For the same reason, amoral people hate Part 3 because it has the most moral clarity of all three Godfather movies as Coppola gives his final judgement on Michael Corleone in the Shakespearean tradition of King Lear.

      @@erwinquiachon8054 Thank You! You really make me want to watch Part 3. I love movies slash show that really make you wonder what's going through the heads of the characters. It's one of the main reasons BREAKING BAD is so interesting to me.

    The way I see it is: the strangling of Frank Pentangeli was deliberately botched. The Rosato brothers (backed by Hyman Roth) had the assassin say "Michael Corleone says hello" and then let him live, now hating Michael. Roth kept him under wraps so Michael would think he was dead.
    Connie's boyfriend, Merle Johnson, was played by Troy Donahue, whose given name was Merle Johnson.

    • @tomcattvreacts
      @tomcattvreacts  10 місяців тому

      In hindsight I agree, it was great plan. Roth was as good of a chess player as Michael.
      That's funny that Merle Johnson played Merle Johnson. So interesting 🤔

    • @anrun
      @anrun 10 місяців тому +1

      The "Michael Corleone says hello" line was improvised by Danny Aiello. Coppola liked it and decided to leave it in.

    • @rxtsec1
      @rxtsec1 10 місяців тому +1

      It wasn't deliberately botched. The police man was on Roth's payroll and told when it was going down to stop it

    Just an off the beaten path thing about the ship at the beginning that brings Vito to America. That ship was breifly in anorher movie.. Rocky in the montage scene wher Rocky is running, he runs righy past that ship. That ship is still in Philly and is now a Boujee restaurant .

    Noooo Michael NEVER wanted to be in the family business according to the movie. Michael was an independent thinker for example he joined the Marines to get away and do his own thing. He dated out of the heritage to get away. He always wanted to be outside like he says later every time he think he is out they drag me back in. He wanted to be His own man and didn't it even if his father did not approve. But once in he to his father's lead and ran with it.

    I also don't think Michael always wanted to join the family business. The way he tells Kay in the first movie that those are his family's ways and not his were not the words of a man itching to join. If the attempt on his father's life never happened and if Sonny lived longer, I think Michael would have started some other career.

      @@tomcattvreacts He isn't an easy character to read always. He was clearly the smartest of the three brothers, so perhaps his getting involved in the family business was inevitable at some point. The or a key moment was when he was alone with his father in the hospital. He tells him that he is with him now. The shooting of his father changed him. When we see him soon after his being punched, notice how he reacts to Tessio telling him and Clemenza that Sonny had Bruno Tattaglia killed. Michael knew or sensed that was a mistake. What would have happened if Sonny hadn't been killed and Michael came back from Italy? The murder of his first wife also, obviously, changed him. But I'm not sure he would have tried to push his older brother out.

      @@anrun I guess you could argue that there are 3 main formative event for Michael.
      His Dad Gets Shot, Loses His First Wife, and his Divorce from his Ex because of her aborting his kid. He seemed to care about more than power up to that point. Having Kay seemed to hold him at bay I guess.
      Really good writing

    Another great reaction to a great film- wanted to especially compliment the wise selection and editing of the clips, which is often where reaction creators fail to clear the first hurdle. I've been looking thru the reactions for a couple days, high quality high effort stuff, not the usual false enthusiasm and filibuster. Cheers.
