The material was a fire retardant so if a fire started onstage they would drop the curtain to prevent it from spreading into the audience. The materials have since changed with the widespread information on the dangers of asbestos. Secondly, it is a reference to Sally Stageplay’s boss fight where the phase transitions were marked by the fire curtain (which in this time would have been made with asbestos) dropping to let the theatre do a scene transition.
