In 2005 I went to the Apple store outlet in my Chinese city because I had heard it was "real" to get the first Ipod shuffle. It was the same price as the states, quite expensive, and I took it home and loved it. I used it for a year with no issues before giving it to my sister in California. It died on her, so she took it in to the apple repair shop and they said no problem, they can fix it. Few hours later she got a call from them she had to come pick up the Shuffle, because only after taking it apart and looking at the internals did they realize it was fake.
Hi Jason! Waiting for the review of DT 1990 Pro MKII and comparisons to the OG 1990 Pro and DT 900 Pro X. Also, thanks for your investigative and informative work into the fake 990 Pro.

You're also my first-to-go regarding anything Beyer. Thanks, man.
The tell tell sign that you noticed was the finish on the yokes. Every fake Beyerdynamic that I've seen has had that textured powder-coating look on the yokes vs the brushed aluminum look.
I'm starting to wonder if I received a fake pair off amazon. I ordered a pair a while ago. They had the grey padding but the sound was crap. They had harmonic distortion with very little pushing. Sent them back the next day. Order the senheiser 560s and absolutely love them
I just got mine from an official Amazon listing and realized they might be fake. After watching this video, I can confirm they are fake. It's incredible how they can get away with selling counterfeit headphones as original ones.
Hi Jason, another great informative video, I had a look on AliExpress have seen the dt990 pro with the DT but not printed on the the grill, I also noticed the 250ohm version has the light grey pads . Regards mark
Question, I recently purchased the TYGR 300 R's and am going to do the detachable cable mod on them. I ordered the "35FM3 3.5mm Switchcraft" three position stereo phone jack. Do you think this kind of jack will work? The entire thing is solid metal, so it seems robust. I also ordered some other connectors that people ordinarily use just in case it doesn't work, but I wanted something more robust that I wouldn't have to worry about going out over time, and I feel like a $12 commercial jack like this would last the longest. lol I have a 3.5mm cable cut in half so I can use it to test the connector before going through the work of installing it into the headphones. Just waiting on everything to come in today.
It may work. It might be a little too long and end up touching the driver. We use jack sockets that are around 20mm long, that on is 35mm long so it would be worth measuring up before you start drilling holes and stuff ;)
@@CustomCans Yeah, it ended up being too long, but what I did was I cut a black plastic sleeve to fit over the exposed threads, screwed it in as far as I could with the long shield pin facing away from the driver, so that the plastic tube/sleeve is screwed tightly against the headphone, and then used some hot glue to hold it in place from the inside. Sticks out a bit, but it looks nice and is solidly attached. Just finished, worked out in the end!
Sorry, there is not way to tell until they arrive ;) they could also be returns or B grade ones that were not good enough to sell for hifiman to sell at full price. I would probably do a hunt online and see if there are any reports of fakes for that model - if other people have received fake ones then that is a warning sign
@ i didn’t buy it, i was actually trying to sell my ones and someone wanted me to lower the price because ali express had it wayy cheaper. And they gave me the link. I didnt lower the price and sold them to someone else. But yeah people are using some ali express prices to base a second hand sell. This is eye opening, scary, and interesting too. The effort they go to. The issue I have is global issue units. I am in Canada. And mine do have the black brushed aluminum look, but the old curved "9"'s. And I changed the pads to black, but forgot for a brief minute and was in a panic. But are the ALL the same for each country?
I am not 100% sure what you mean , But .... All the real ones are hand built in Germany, they update the design slight every so often and as they are hand built there are variations in how they are wired internally and stuff, different people on the production line all build them slightly differently.
@@CustomCans Thanks for the reply! Okay, that is interesting to know! I didn't know that, Very cool. I own IE600 IEMs and spotted a pair on AliExpress much cheaper. I guessed by the price that they were fake but they offered unconditional returns so I bought a pair, thinking they'd be OK as backups or wearing outdoors rather than risking my originals. Comparing the two, the box and devices looked quite similar but I couldn't unplug the cable once plugged in, the sound was definitely not as good, and the main 'tell' was the lack of Sennheiser hologram and QR code sticker on the box. They were pretty good copies and without comparing them to the real thing they wouldn't be bad but in the end I decided not to bother and sent them back, knowing they couldn't argue as I could prove they were fake. I buy lots of bits and pieces from Ali but wouldn't trust them with a big name item, especially if significantly cheaper than anywhere else.
Similar thing happened to Sennheiser a year ago. A sh%t ton of IE300/600/900 appeared on Aliexpress around 11.11 but i really hate "too good to be true" so i passed on that. The originals go for 300-900$ and those were ranging from 80$ to 250$. Sadly, many people fell for it before Aliexpress dealt with it. Hopefully most got refunded. I don't blame them for being unreasonable, a 900$ flagship for 250$ is tempting even if it screams fake. Right now there is only IE300 for 80$ from few suspiciously new stores. MSRP of these is 300$ and they're discontinued, even Sennheiser themselves replace them with IE200 if yours break so, its hard to believe a random 11.11 appearing store "has some stock left".
