I will never forgive pretty little liars for gaslighting me into thinking Ezra and Aria’s relationship was perfectly okay as a kid 😭 especially since in the books Ezra immediately went to jail after their relationship was found out and never appeared again
They cast an actor who's 27 to play a character who's 22 and another actor who's 25 to play a character who's 16. That's why it takes a while for us to realize how messed up the whole romantic plot is. It looks right when we focus on the beautiful cast rather than the story, which is what teenagers tend to do.
@@caseyaonso4270 The relationship between Chris and Angie on Skins made me very uncomfortable because they did very well with portraying the characters as teens/children. I also don't think the teacher-student relationship never was questioned if it's wrong or right. Everybody was aware that it wasn't a good thing and that they have to stop.
This is true. You tend not to think about it when the teenagers who look like they’re 24 date older people in the show. Because in reality they are all older than 22
I had gotten into the books of PLL through the show and the ACTUAL SOURCE MATERIAL had Ezra get arrested for preying on a high school student. They retconned Aria's pretty good relationship with a student of her own age in the books for the creepy teacher student one in the show. There was even a scene in the books where Ezra had gotten out of prison and then - guess what - was caught as a total creep for being in another relationship with an underage student
I never made it to that point in the books but i remember them being wayy different from the TV show. Wish they would have stuck to that story, it's completely realistic and wouldn't have convinced too many teen girls that having a relationship with a teacher was ok edit,,, maybe its not realistic, considering how many predators get away with this crap. But i want groomers being arrested to be *my* reality

In the show it was kept as long as it was - despite Ian Harding, Ezra's actor, being vehemently disgusted by the relationship, even calling his character America's Most Beloved Pedophile - because I Marlene King, the showrunner, loved them.
@@DrGregoryHouseIT Marlene king genuinely needs to face genuine repercussions and consequences for making a generation of young teen girls think a man in his mid twenties / their teacher hitting on them is okay and even romantic, I’m glad to hear at least Ian Harding realised how screwed up his character was.
I think the acceptance and support for Ezria was largely due to all the ‘teens’ being played by full adults. Aria never looked underage to us, so Ezria didn’t seem creepy together
and he never got to put it on. like, I'm so saddened by this. when I read the books I was sad at first that he's sent away and he breaks up the relationship as soon as they're found out (not soon enough for me now, tho), but now I'm pissed marlene kept them up and going on and off for so long. like ffs marlene, let a kid grow up and realise they've been abused in their teens!!
Who was played by Troian Bellisario’s now real life husband Patrick J Adams … he actively went after that part because she had broken up with him due to work scheduling. He has gone on record saying it was the best role of us life, he got to be the ONLY true voice of reason about Erzia and he and Troian got back together!
Pretty Little Liars and other teen shows of the time totally normalized and romanticized minors dating adults, and it contributed a lot to my own grooming and abuse by older men. It was such a common thing growing up in the early/mid 2000s. Ugh.
Also this is slightly off topic but her wedding dress was f****** hideous. God it looks so 2010 in a bad way. The extremely short length, the faux lace, the '60s Bell sleeves, she looks like she's going to a crappy state fair while everyone else around her is dressed to the nines in a formal decorated church. Super ugly. She looks extremely out of place. Which isn't what the directors were going for but can be looked at as a metaphor for her relationship with a teacher she is NOT prepared for. She looks out of place because she shouldn't be there and she shouldn't be marrying him. Unfortunately that's just my head canon. The way the writers and directors treated that relationship for the rest of the show is too positive for this to be what they were going for.
I heard Glee was supposed to be like a Highschool Musical satire type of show and it really shows in season 1. But they got really big and started to take themselves seriously by season 3 that it just got ridiculous.
mans said "you're all minorities...you're the glee club" with a straight face in the first episode. It always took itself too seriously and then would swing to extreme satire. it was always off
The wild thing about glee is that the storylines are all recycled from the show "Popular" which definitely had a stronger satire feel, and yes, same creator >. >
The creator of the show is very much the “let’s do an off the wall, edgy satire” kind of guy. His other shows have that energy for sure, I think they just got stuck with it being taken more earnestly by a broader audience than his other shows were lmao
And the worst part about the Ezra/Aria relationship is that we find out later, that he also was romantically involved with Alison when she was even younger and knew who and how old Aria was when he met her in the bar
I think everyone seems to forget the fact that Ezra 100% knew who Aria was at the bar???? He confessed like several seasons in that he knew and also had a relationship with Allison before this, when she was FOURTEEN. He specifically sought Aria out because he knew she'd been close to Allison. That was the thing that officially turned me off Ezria and made it so hard for me to finish the show.
The whole student teacher relationship thing is the reason why I love the show Cruel Summer. It actually showed us as the audience how grooming really starts, and how it can be easy to convince a whole child that it was their decision. It’s the ONLY show that did not glamorize it and I love it!
I Like copenhagen, where when He finds Out even though He IS tempted and Overall Not a responsible or very good Person, He choses to reject her because He genuinly Cares for her an knows IT IS wrong. She pushed, He did Not know at the start, He was drunk, He IS in a vunerable state, IT would have been so easy to make excuses, But He does Not, He IS aware AS the adult IT IS one him to say No so He Takes responsability once in His life and tells her No AS she throws herself at him
riverdale is carrying supernatural's legacy of having the most unhinged non sensical plot lines ever, the "if you are just a casual viewer or dropped the series ealier on you now have no idea what the show is about but have the need to watch it to see how it ties together" and i honestly respect it. i wonder if someone will end up on superhell cause honestly it seems completely possible
A friend of mine told me the current storyline of Riverdale and I genuinely thought she was telling me a really surreal joke, right until I watched said season and oh my god..
I'd say abt 90% of Buffy aged incredibly well.. (setting aside the recent controversy with its creator) its truly a masterpiece of storytelling, teen or otherwise.
that’s because the people that hate glee that haven’t watched it don’t hate it for the right reasons, they just hate it bc high school theatre kids are annoying, and while that’s true, they don’t deserve intense hate bc we’ve all been cringey and had to learn
YES! No one seems to understand that when Ezra was caught being A , he confessed into knowing that these girls were in danger because he thought it would make a good book for it to reach 2 stars on Amazon and he did nothing to protect them they were literally being stalked and almost killed !
I was an Ezria stan when I was 14 and even I was annoyed at that reveal. why didn't he tell the police or their parents anonymously? Also the fact that he confessed to dating Ali too I--
@@tunafish5462 just poor writing and just ridiculous, I was so upset that aria ended up with him . How crazy is that the relationship that Mona had with aria’s brother was the most healthy imo
I just think it's such a sarcastic thing that the universe did by making such awful horrible things come out from the cast of such a over the top positive tv show
The whole teacher & student in Pretty Little Liars reminded me of when I was in high school whenever there was a young Caucasian male teacher they would always have this weird fanbase of "adoring" students. Idk I feel like that type of behavior shouldn't be normalized in irl and in media.
@@lordarthur2165 Yes, I agree a simple crush is harmless and when a teacher takes advantage of it is definitely not okay!I should've been a bit clear about how some students will purely sexualize a teacher, and it's just dehumanizing and disgusting. @@GioInvestigatesFrogs I do understand it feels weird and we should talk about this with teens to guide them to understand their feelings without dehumanising someone, but I know a lot of people that shame teens for having crushes on older people which breaks my heart, we shouldn't shame them for having feelings. However I understand it completely what your point it, sorry if I misunderstood what you said originally.
@@GioInvestigatesFrogs I mean... Teens are hormonal, they either wanna marry some grown person or bang them. I think it's understandable for kids to think /talk amongst themselves like that as long as they're not acting on it.
I was in a facebook group for ezria when i was like 11 and I remember we used to worship that relationship. We were all teens and preteens and the way we all wanted that same exact thing to happen to us is insane to me now. They really normalized the shit out of that toxic "relationship" to a whole generation.
@@heartiko2681 what about something like a panel of people who are there to read over the plot lines for teen dramas and decide if the story is going to be harmful for impressionable children
I think part of the issue with Ezria and how easily it was accepted by people watching was how much older the actresses are than the characters and how little the creators tried to make them look like teenagers
I would like to include SKINS UK in this. Everyone on tumblr was in middle school or so and glamourised EDs, doing drugs, characters that bullied others and SA. Plus, Cassie posts and glamourisation singlehandedly turned a lot a people from that time into disordered eating and eventually EDs. Everyone on tumblr wanted to be like Effie and Cass, it was very messed up.
This is why I'll never understand why Gen Z sleeps on Buffy The Vampire Slayer so much. It's the show that inspired all of these shows, the supernatural shows, the high school dramedy's... It's got all of the wacky plot lines, insane ensemble casts of lovable characters, the mystery and horror, witty and iconic dialogue, etc but without any of the bullshit. It's never making shit up as it goes, it doesn't jump the shark, it never betrays who it's characters are. The show is a masterpiece of fiction, a coming of age allegory using vampires and a destiny as a slayer as a metaphor for the traumas, responsibilities and trials of growing up - and it just so happens to be a show aimed at teens, rather then being a teen show first and foremost. Not to mention how dark and adult the later seasons get. Seriously, anyone who enjoyed Glee, or Riverdale, or TVD or Supernatural - please, you owe it to yourself to watch Buffy. To this day, it's the MOST academically written about TV show ever made. Meaning out of every TV show or movie in the world, Buffy has more university papers written about it than anything else. More than Breaking Bad, or The Wire, or even movies like Alien or The Terminator. It's a classic. People think it's a silly show because of it's campy name, and it is, but that was the creator's vision - he made the name campy so it would only attract the geeks and the outcasts to watch it, and they did, and it saved our lives. Please, everyone - go watch Buffy right now. It's got all the camp, iconic-ness, and hilarity of these shows - but with a masterpiece story attached to it. Trust me. You guys will LOVE IT.
Me too but on top of the creepiness I hate them because my father and mother were teacher and student and that ended up in a divorce and too child support trials. Sorry for tmi lmao
The craziest part of that Ezria confession scene is that some predators actually will tell the parents and the parents will fucking let it slide. Like, the most insane part is that it’s not even an unrealistic/uncommon scenario
oh my god and let’s not forget that sasha pieterse was 12 when she shot the pilot episode of pll 💀💀 while the other main 4 were in their early to mid 20s
the thing i love about glee is yes they had some absurd and digesting plot lines, the show made fun of itself calling out the craziness. this usually happens during sue amazing confrontations with mr shue
HARD agree on the Ezra/Aria slander, I went through the same issues of not seeing anything wrong on the first watch through to look back on it years later and go “…yikes…” Made me really reflect on how weirdly normalized that is in media. I assume it must be a mix between me being more mature now and also having more education and experience in the world to realize how awful that power dynamic is as a premise but I’m more picky about the media I consume now. Also, a huge testament to your point that they focused all of the conflict on the teacher and student dynamic rather than the age gap because I genuinely didn’t think about that for awhile even after I fully realized how awful it was to root for a teacher/student relationship(which though still not okay in college, is way worse of a concept when in high school)
My best friend's mum literally committed suicide by rolling her wheelchair into water. And given my best friend's sense of humour I can confidently say that even she would agree that the scene with Artie flopping forward into the pool is a greater travesty.

Same here. I can’t speak of the latter parts of the next generation, but the first half is remarkably uncringy, all things considered. I mean, at least half of the topics covered would probably have been turned into very special episodes if they were in the hands of less competent writers and and child actors.
I feel like the weird exception to this rule is animated TV shows. In fact, as I've gotten older and rewatched some of my favorite animated shows that I enjoyed as a teen, like Avatar the Last Airbender, Adventure Time, Regular Show, Gravity Falls, etc., I feel like my appreciation for them actually increased.

A teen show that aged well but wasn't in the 2010's is Veronica Mars, particularly the first two seasons. There's definitely stuff that's cringey or dated, but generally it's still really good almost 20 years later.
I literally just started rewatching Freeform’s “The Fosters”, which I adored in college, and in just the first two episodes I’ve cringed about a dozen times. Why did we all dress like that.
i remember my dad walking into my room as i watched an ezria scene and him telling me i needed to turn it off… and i got SO mad at him and said he just didn’t understand them… my childhood self was so brainwashed
This has been said before, but I will say it again: GLEE was never meant to be taken seriously. Also, GLEE did help a lot of LGBT+ youth to accept themselves so it did have positive aspects despite the weirdness of it all.
Yeah same, when I was younger I saw my classmates who were watching the show just loving ezria. And I hated their relationship and kept thinking something was off and I never realised the reason why they made me uncomfortable till recently.
This is what happens when you ask people who haven't been teenagers for decades to write to the lived experiences of current teenagers.🤷♂️. Also if Glee did K-pop. The troubletones covering How You Like That. Think about that.
remember that they did Gangnam style for some reason??? that was weird. i see the troubletones performing something like Egotistic from Mamamoo! would be fire
A good example of a teen movie not aging badly is Edge of Seventeen, mainly because it shows the main character being in the wrong and having to learn from it through real life consequences of her actions eventually leading to growth and maturity.

Pretty Little Liars: In the books written by Sara Shepard, Ezra goes to jail and Aria gets with a boy her age. So that shows that Marlene was the one who decided to romanticize their relationship and make people think that it’s okay.
Victorious is one of the Disney/Nick teen shows closest to how real teens act, the characters in the show aren't fluffed up and act like little kids (aside from Cat) but they aren't drunk druggies who constantly have sex and break the law. It's a happy medium.
Well I'm happy to say I've seen none of these except one episode of glee because in my teen years I was obsessed with cop shows like Hawaii 5-0, Criminal minds and CSI NY.
The greatest thing about watching PLL and being an older teen (so the age range or so the girls were supposed to be) was that I would watch it with my mom and the only thing she complained about, was the bad hair extensions because she's a hairdresser and it was obvious. Not a SINGLE word about "hey, don't date your teacher" to her high school age daughter who thought it was all fine and dandy, goals even. Glee is nostalgic for me because my best friend and I would drive out to another city at midnight, get McDonald's and watch the newest episode of Glee on his ipad in the Walmart parking lot. If you live you in a small town, then you get it. BUt dear gods, did it not age well except for the earlier music choices. They got Journey trending again.
I remember seeing another video that pointed out that shows targeted toward adults treat student-teacher relationships for the crimes they are. Whereas, teen shows want to show it as scandalous but true love.
I definitely thought the title said “why did every teenage show like milk” and I was like yeah, why did all the teens in the shows I watched drink glasses of milk as if it was normal
I marathoned the entirety of Glee over a week off from work and lemme tell you, the amount of mood whiplashes and audible gasp at the most out of pocket jokes and lines I heard on top of the many scandals and the passing of two of the actors made it incredibly difficult to watch after a while..

the first season of the oc is perfect tv to me imo -- like it has seriously held up. the latter seasons aren't as good (i still like them), but s1 is still really highly regarded by adults and the overall tv industry.
Ezra and Aria storyline reminds me of a similar couple from a series that i watched and loved a lot as a teen. it's called Ranetki, centered around a group of 5 teen girls from the same school who formed a girlgroup. the main characters were about 15-16 at the start of the storyline, and there was an ongoing romance between Lena, one of the main girls, and THEIR P.E. TEACHER, who was somewhere *from 30 to 40* years old. 🤦♀️ to make the situation worse, the teacher knew Lena as his student from the start AND was friends with her grandfather. yikes. and i liked their couple a lot. BIG YIKES. they were on and off, then started dating officially after Lena's graduation from school, and even moved in with each other at the time when she went to college, if i remember correctly. the series continued, and the teacher started to get posessive over Lena, was angry that she was having fun and being friends with guys from college. he tried to limit her normal college kid life in many ways, became quite abusive. then they broke up, and i hope they broke up for good!! i don't really know because my mom stopped letting me watch the series after that plot point. 😂😂😂😂 so yeah, very creepy. and the series aged pretty bad for many reasons, but it's still kinda enjoyable to watch. it's so bad that it's good sometimes. 😂 and also the main girls carried the show! they were very charismatic and have got some catchy love songs. i still listen to them with my bestie when we're drunk :D
That iconic Santana read against Kurt is actually really sad. Naya Rivera said on a podcast that she hated this scene because Chris Colfer got really upset filming it and she herself felt terrible and had to constantly reassure him it was ok. This was coz the whole thing was actually a horribly petty Ryan Murphy punishing Chris for spending time on other work projects that weren't Glee. Kurt's character was written from scratch FOR Chris using some real aspects of his own life and personality, and many of the aspects of "Kurt's" character that were being flanderized and attacked in that read were basically just intended to be attacks on Chris.
Okay, this video needs a part 2!!! I think Glee and PLL alone have so much terrible material, we could spend weeks talking about it. All the male characters on glee were very problematic, the story for how puck got quinn pregnant borderlines on non-consensus sex, not mention how they romanticize completely toxic male behaviour. Also, I think Gossip Girl NEEDS a place in this list. There are so SO many examples I don't even know how to start.
when shows really date temselves by bringing in whatever is trending it absolutely takes me out whenever I rewatch. like one of my all time fave shows is switched at birth and in season one there is an episode about planking. like...what?

My favorite line ever is when Emily is bribing Caleb to break into the computer faster and asked like “would $60 get it done faster?” And he gets real serious and leans in and says “let’s get this straight… yes.” Granted when I rewatched the show I was on opiates recovering from shoulder surgery but it’s great
I recently started rewatching PLL and the way Ezria is set up, I still found myself rooting for them 💀 And most of the time they act like 2 people in their 20s having a long term relationship which makes the scenes when Aria does act 16 and Ezra responds as if she's not all the more jarring
I remember when I was in high school (2001-2005) there were several student/teacher relationships at my school and while we all thought it was “cringe” (to retroactively apply contemporary parlance) nobody was like “this is literally a crime call the police” I can’t imagine thinking that now.
they were so good! i feel like seasons 1 - 3 of glee were the best (song wise, cohesive enough storyline), but after season 3 it just kinda fell off (i still watched the whole show still though). i mean, the show did really age badly, but the covers were pretty decent.
as someone who watched the fosters as a kid, w all the issues that show tackled, and as someone who just started binging PLL in the last 2-3 months (currently on S5 and I'm 21 y/o), I always hated ezria and cant imagine ever shipping them like I was uncomfy the entire time lmao but I guess they get married so I'll have to get used to it eventually bc ngl I kept thinking he was gonna die esp after he got shot on that roof
I think with Glee, the first 13 episodes were actually satire so Schue’s mash up in Ballad was tounge-in-cheek. The show goes off the rails from S2 onward. There are so many jokes on that show that would never be made today. So many stereotypes perpetuated. But I think at times Glee purposely did stuff. Like Schue was called out for dancing in Toxic with his students. No one thought it wasn’t weird, his character was trying to impress his love interest and has terrible judgement. I think Glee has a lot of racist jokes towards Mike, Mercedes, and Tina and that’s it’s worst quality. Writing things like “Asian… other Asian” or “traditional soup made from panda hair” and “my weave!” like you expect non-white people to laugh?? To think that’s funny?
I remember they release Glee at the height of the high school musical era and a lot of artists refuse to give the rights to use their songs and now infamously known for the Lea Michele vs the whole Glee cast feud

& THAT was the moment they could have addressed how fucked up of a relationship it is and always have been. but nah, they glossed over that real fast.

so yeah, very creepy. and the series aged pretty bad for many reasons, but it's still kinda enjoyable to watch. it's so bad that it's good sometimes. 😂 and also the main girls carried the show! they were very charismatic and have got some catchy love songs. i still listen to them with my bestie when we're drunk :D
feel so old now that i've remembered ranetki :,))
No bcz Aria and Ezra literally changed my brain chemistry in middle school 😭
Okay, this video needs a part 2!!! I think Glee and PLL alone have so much terrible material, we could spend weeks talking about it. All the male characters on glee were very problematic, the story for how puck got quinn pregnant borderlines on non-consensus sex, not mention how they romanticize completely toxic male behaviour. Also, I think Gossip Girl NEEDS a place in this list. There are so SO many examples I don't even know how to start.
I think gossip girl s1 was supposed to be critical of the characters and the later seasons they were painted as iconic
when shows really date temselves by bringing in whatever is trending it absolutely takes me out whenever I rewatch. like one of my all time fave shows is switched at birth and in season one there is an episode about planking. like...what?

they're my new comfort food but in video form. i've been pining for the glee part 2 for months now. 😭😭when will my husband (michael microphone) come home from the war (weeks of video hiatus)? 😞🔫
@@tocotronicon haha! Soon! He's been working on em (plus he had to go be bougie at the PLL: Original Sin premiere!)
Let’s take Rachel Berry out that thumbnail Glee is fine wine 😩
This is Veronica Mars erasure, the only teen show I can take seriously
I saw it for the first time when corona started and honestly iconic
they should have used does your mother know by abba for Shu’s rejection. its a good tune plus it gets the message of “i do not want to date you, you are underage, you do not understand mature love” across so much better.
Casey knew better than to add classics like Dawson’s Creek, OTH, Gossip Girl, The OC, etc. bcuz those all aged pretty good imo
for real. for the last several years, i've been trying to find newer teen shows that compared to the classics like Dawsons creek and the OC.. I've pretty much started watching season 1 of all the teen drama shows i can find and still haven't found any that compare to the classics of dawsons creek and the OC.
@@skeleton5459 I didn’t watch any of those shows when they were on but I recently did a binge of all of them and watching them in for the first time ever in 2022, they all aged well imo & became some of my favorite shows especially Dawson’s Creek & OTH
Chuck was an abusive POS and a terrible person and his entire character aged so poorly. I want financial compensation for listening to that creepy whisper voice of his for so long.
I've seen a couple of videos that discuss this same topic, but your presentation and discussion of this topic is the first one that had me dying laughing.
AMAZING. I’ve never been this early, so excited for this Casey. I was literally JUST watching awful clips from PLL I’m so excited for this
🥰🥰🥰
UA-cam recommended your content to me a few times so I watched and liked a few videos but you saying that Glee aged like wine is what makes me subscribe!!!
The first one I watched was the one on nepotism and I loved it, you are iconic
kisses from Brazil
My favorite line ever is when Emily is bribing Caleb to break into the computer faster and asked like “would $60 get it done faster?” And he gets real serious and leans in and says “let’s get this straight… yes.” Granted when I rewatched the show I was on opiates recovering from shoulder surgery but it’s great
Casey I want to thank you. Struggling with insomnia, I rewatch your videos almost every night to help me sleep, bc your voice tone is so soothing.
Glee Season 3 Volume 7 and The Graduation Album will forever be ingrained in my psyche they were THAT good
they were so good! i feel like seasons 1 - 3 of glee were the best (song wise, cohesive enough storyline), but after season 3 it just kinda fell off (i still watched the whole show still though). i mean, the show did really age badly, but the covers were pretty decent.
as someone who watched the fosters as a kid, w all the issues that show tackled, and as someone who just started binging PLL in the last 2-3 months (currently on S5 and I'm 21 y/o), I always hated ezria and cant imagine ever shipping them like I was uncomfy the entire time lmao but I guess they get married so I'll have to get used to it eventually bc ngl I kept thinking he was gonna die esp after he got shot on that roof
Veronica Mars does the teacher-student thing well. Especially seeing Veronica's disillusionment about a teacher she truly admired.
"Call off your techno boy toy or I tell the cops what your mom keeps in the Lasagna box" is what I'll engrave on my grave stone
I remember they release Glee at the height of the high school musical era and a lot of artists refuse to give the rights to use their songs and now infamously known for the Lea Michele vs the whole Glee cast feud
