Iam78 years old left Greece at 8 years never forgotten this song as Leonidion and this song makes my blood run hot with pride for my homeland
The Dance of Zalongo refers to the mass suicide of women from Souli and their children during that occurred in the aftermath of an invasion of Ottoman troops on December 16, 1803.
The women of Souli chose death before enslavement and dishonour by taking a leap over the Zalongo gorge cliff.
To this day they remain a reminder that life without freedom is not worth living as fish cannot live on dry land nor flower can blossom on sand.
My deep gratitude to the U.S. armed forces for honouring us with this stellar performance.
Thank you
And thank you for the explanation, for teaching the rest of the world history, honour and dignity
Indeed Anastasie, thanks for putting that into context!
@@strll3048 I don't think he has a problem.
Δεν έχω ξεκαθαρίσει ακόμα αν ήταν θυσία ή αυτοθυσία, αλλά το αυτοκτονία "απέχει" πολύ.
I remember the time i learned it from history teacher in high school.
The women with their children on hands dancing and singing these lyrics and one by one jump of the cliff while the rest of the men wait along with the priest, the invaders inside the church where all the gunpowder was stored..
This song takes me there.

Long live the brave women of Souli who jumped to their death rather than be slaves. What brave women! What dignity! Bravo! 🇬🇷🇬🇷🇬🇷
The "Dance of Zalongos" is a legend which has a referrence to an historical core event that took place after the final occupation of Souli by the troops of Ali Pasha. On December 18, 1803 (old calendar), at the top of Mount Zalongo, a group of Souliotisses (female) and Souliotes (male) with their children decided to die free rather than fall into the hands of the Turkes-Albanes. Thus, with an act of self-sacrifice, they preferred, instead of being dishonored by their eternal enemy, to fall from the edge of the cliff. Some sources of that time, or later, report that the Souliotisses fell while dancing and singing.
A big applause to the U.S. armed forces for honoring this anniversary with this amazing performance.
Thank you Manina

This song is an ode to freedom and was sung by the women of Souli who, rather than be captured by the Ottoman soldiers who invaded their village, preferred to leap to their death from nearby cliffs. It says:
Farewell poor world,
Farewell sweet life,
Farewell springs.
Dells, mountains and ridges,
Farewell springs
And you, women of Souli.
On land a fish cannot dwell,
Nay a flower on the sand,
Farewell springs,
Dells, mountains and ridges,
And the women of Souli,
Cannot live without freedom.
Thank you so much for this video!
"May you fare well unfortunate world
farewell to you dear life,
and you misfortunate homeland
farewell forever.
May you fare well little fountains,
forests, mountains, little ridges
May you fare well little fountains
Farewell to you, girls of Souli
Fish don't live ashore
and fllowers don't blossom on the beach
And Souli girls are unable to live on
having been deprived of their freedom
May you fare well little fountains,
forests, mountains, little ridges
May you fare well little fountains
Farewell to you, girls of Souli".
The Dance of Zalongo refers to the mass suicide/sucrifice of women from Souli and their children during that occurred in the aftermatch of an invasion of Ottoman troops on December 16, 1803. The event is commemorated in Greece in the context of the Greek War of Independence. A number of 60 women were trapped near the village of Zalongo in Epirus, modern Greece, then Ottoman Empire and decided to turn towards the cliff's edge and die with their infants and children rather to submit to the Ottoman troops chasing them. According to tradition they did this one after the other while dancing and singing
Great contribution translating the song so accurately !
I dont know english, but i think its better if we ll say "mass self-sacrifice" and not "mass suicide".

This is just beautiful. It then made me research the actual Greek version and the legend behind it. Very sad, very poignant... fits perfectly into such a beautiful song performed so professionally by this US army group. The song is based on an event that occurred before Greek Independence from the Ottoman Turks. The village of Souli was apparently surrounded by the Turks, the inhabitants were starved and weakened. so they split into 2 groups to escape. One group of women and children was cornered at the top of a cliff, and rather than allow themselves to be captured and enslaved, they danced one final time and, one by one with their children, they threw themselves off the cliff in a final and extreme act of bravery and defiance. Unbelievably beautiful and poignant song..... and Bravo for such a supreme performance. I am sure you touched many Greek hearts, as well as others.
