  • Across the length of the Himalayas, several groups of people collectively known as Bhotiyas by people of the rest of India and Nepal used to reside. There chief occupation was trading goods and acting as middlemen between Tibet and India.
This, is their story. More specificallly, the story of Shauka people, who live in the Johar Valley of Pithoragarh District, in Kumaon, Uttarakhand, India, from their origins, history, culture, their annual migration and the details of their annual trade with Tibet. You might have heard of places like Milam or Munsyari, which were settled by the Shaukas.
    Well, enjoy!

This one's a long one for sure. Sit back, take your time. Took me a very long time to write, arrange, record and edit it. Like Months. But, I am not the only one who did the work. I actually have never visited Johar, so if you see a shot that made you go "Whoa!", almost certainly it was shot by this guy: www.youtube.com/@deepakbafila08
A massive thanks to Dr. Shekhar Pathak as well.
Also, the lady at 24:18 is named Chandra Devi, a migratory resident of Martoli village, didn't know her name until writing this comment.

As a Bhotiya ( A Rung from Darma ) i felt, you did justice to the whole Uttarakhandi Bhotiya Community by just one video on Shaukas!
There were few more misnomers i would like to clarify in context to the Rungs, as the Rung from Darma are Darmaani ( not Darmiya ), Bangbani for Rungs in Chaudas and Byangpa for Rungs in Vyas
also, People in Ralam Valley are also Rung.
    Thank You again !!

In context to other Bhotiyas of Uttarakhand, Tolchhas and Marchhas are collectively known as Rongpa
and there is one more Community Khampa, From The Kham province of Tibet , some of them have been residing in uttarakhand during this Trade period, especially in the Khimling village of Darma Valley, today Khimling has been almost abandoned, Groups of Khampas are living in Dharchula, Almora etc.

The line “it took many years to create but took only a year to stopped” was powerful…… even in Arunachal 1962 stopped many things which was aged old, between Arunachal and tibet, now we only hear stories about them. from west to east many tribes are special relation with tibet, that lost and cut off after that war….

Too good… A drop of tear came in when Dr Shekar Pathak mentioned that the communities are not aware that they have lost a tradition even though many of them have got well settled. I just thought through the same, in the race of newer lives we are in race to move to Urban clusters losing our tradition and culture.

As a person from Shuaka community, I would like acknowledge it is the finest documentry on our tribe I came across. Well words put together!
Also I would correct slight mistake that Ralam valley culturally and linguistically diffrent to Shuakas. The inhabitants of that valley are resisded by rung tribe. They share more similarities with Rungs from Darma and had high altitute trek routes that connected Darma valley. Also Ralam valley is not considerd as part of malla Johar valley.
Besides Jad bhota, the Rung tribe has retain some form Buddhist and bon practises. They also have lamas and buddhist chapels. Although the numbers are miniscule but they still exists today. Few members of rung community have revived buddhist traditions.

And, while Ralam is culturally distinct from Johar as you mentioned, the village does come under Johar, at least administratively, because the access to the village is orders of magnitude easier from Johar valley than Darma, the physical barrier between Ralam and Darma is huge.

I am from haldwani and like most my parents to migrated from pahad so to provide us better education and for better health care facilities, do you know in haldwani be have "Johar mahautsav" its celebrated by bhotiya people its like a cultural fair, they serve there traditional food and dance and everything all people are invited and are free to come, haldwani has all type of kumaoni communities from johar valley to almora every type of kumaoni person is here and we have good ammount of bohotiya settlement thanks to that i have many bhotoiya friends as well, even though we all miss our pahad dearly, sometimes i feel that Haldwani serves as a melting point of all kumaoni culture and all different communities become friends and get to know each other is one of the positive and delightful side of the coin, a thing which allows me to see positive in this city when I sadly and angrily criticize govt for not developing our villages and distroying our culture the anger also become directed towards the city I myself am from

Winter migration happens in many parts of Nepal not only adjacent to Uttarakhand. There are hundreds of villages from where people migrate to low lands during peak winter.

@@basantrajdhungana9666 you have wrong information. Being a trekking enthusiast I've been to many remote mountain places and there are many villages that migrate when there is too much snow. Upper Dolpo, Mustang,Manang ,Tsum Valley , Rolwaling valley ,Dhorpatan etc , you'll find those migratory villages. And for Far West the video says that there are such villages adjacent to Uttarakhand.

As a keen learner of Uttarakhand's culture and history, I must say that you are doing an incredible job of keeping to the state's little-known past. This is the icing on the cake, dude.

I'm sure very less percentage of Indians know the History of Northern mountains. It's a great effort that We come to know about such facts of Himachal and Uttarakhand history. I'll always look forward for more such topics. GREAT WORK 👍🏻👍🏻✨✨🙏🏻

The term _bhotia_ is indeed a misapplied or inappropriate name for the trading communities of the north.
It's very sad that many people within State and even the Tribal Commission is unaware of it.
