  • If you've spent any time in a machine shop, or in an engineering department for that matter, you've almost certainly had a chance to delve into the depths of the Machinery's Handbook. This tome of machinist's information and data always seems to have something you can use to answer those "how do I calculate that?" questions.
    Mark talks about what makes this book so great and also shows us a few other useful reference books for everyone in the machinist trade.

    I Have the digital edition. Ever since I started having a laptop I'll never go back. You can highlight and make bookmarks for anything and navigate there with the click of a mouse. I do this for tooling catalogs and other PDFs as well. It's awesome having every chart you could possibly need and you can search by text too.

    I bought a copy of the 23rd edition in 1990 when I really graduated from being a machine operator to a machinist. In my copy, the thread pages and the speed and feed pages are all dirty and have post-it notes sticking out of them. Thanks for the "Flashback".

      Tabellenbuch Metall from Europa Lehrmittel. I first got used to it when I was about 14 and used it trougout school, and now my apprenticeship. I have indeed spent money to buy some extras so i have some around to trow at engineers who have asked me what hole to drill for M6 treads.

    Just got the 31st edition. Been in the trade 14 yrs. Have been telling myself to buy it for a long time, finally got it after struggling to find info on some bspt threads. Thread disk is a fantastic thread database, but has nothing for bspt, only npt pipe threads. The handbook is loaded with info!
    Thanks to Haas for all the great videos. Wish this stuff was around when i got started.

    CNC programming using custom macro b, S. K. Sinha
    Also used are several Mike Lynch publications.
    I have quite a collection of books that date back to the late 1800’s including tools. I have also collected a few rare slide rules with books on how to use them. My most cherished book is my great grandfathers machinery’s handbook that I also still use today!

    In the Machinery's Handbook, there's a small section I use often: logarithms of gear ratios. I cut gears and sometimes I do not have the correct set of gears to obtain the needed ratio for the machine. The tables and simple calculations make finding another set of gears (just to be clear: I'm talking about ratios with 4 or more gears not just 2 index gears) a breeze.

    After 5 years I got that book a few months back just for the thread chapter
    That book is epic, almost all the crazy diffrent thread sizes are in that book

    • @markterryberry4477
      @markterryberry4477 3 роки тому +3

      One of the only threads I didn't find in the MH was an 8-26 thread which is common on Pre-War Banjos, like the Gibsons. I'm not sure how 8-26 became the thread of choice for those hooks/nuts. I think that WWII helped to standardize thread sizes everywhere.

    I’ve got several books including the machinist handbook (the machinist Bible) but I’ve made my own special binder with my favorite charts printed off on printer paper, laminated and hole punched.

    • @markterryberry4477
      @markterryberry4477 3 роки тому +2

      I have a binder like that! It's filled with specific info on customer related parts. Counterbore/Countersink, Fit Tolerances, -AN Port tolerances from the Mil Specs, some JIS standards, and a few properties of material sheets on some odd alloys. I saw a pic of someone's binder on the Machinist threads this week, and they had pages filled out with their feeds/speeds/stepover/DOC for all the tools in their library, for different materials - great idea. Thanks for the comment.

      The book here in Sweden is called "Verkstadshandboken" (The workshop handbook/manual/guide)
      The modern version is black and compact with approximately 360 pages. It contains everything from feeds/speeds, milling, turning, unit converters, ISO tolerances, drilling and threading, material names/properties, some G-codes and M-codes and more.
      Got my own private copy as a Christmas present last year and I carry it with me at all times at work.
      A fresh copy is more or less 60 USD.

    just a side note about Haas shop notes... I have my own notebook I put together over the years, and the Haas shop notebook is basically interchangeable with my personal notebook, and I think that is very unusual and interesting. I've made several of these machinist notebooks too, I'm working on my 27th edition. My first one had a lot of information about 2 axis haas lathes, this newer edition has a lot of information about haas 5 axis umc 750. I really love how fun it is to learn more about haas machines.

    As someone in the rest of the world, I wish the Machinery's Handbook would purge all the nonsense imperial units! I still use it as the go-to reference of course as it's simply the only complete reference, but even in the latest edition there's a lot of imperial-only data that you're then referred to conversion charts for. I do love the Engineers Black Book, as it's available in a Metic edition and like you say it feels amazing and the ring-binding is great, but it's so small that it's only good for the bare essentials. While designing, the Machinery's Handbook is always close at hand.

That's pretty impressive. I used the shop's 24th edition for years before buying my own. Those Edition numbers kind of feel like Employee numbers to us machinists, we always want the coveted low numbers. They are like a craftsman's nicely worn tool belt - a badge of honor.
