Figure-ground relationship is the relationship between the foreground subject and the background

Thanks for sharing. The story of Penn vs Avedon is stuff of movies both from their styles as well as their personalities. BTW, "the man" on that pic referenced in the O'Keefe image is Truman Capote - pretty famous image in it's own right. Thanks again for sharing

I’ve always thought Michael Douglas would make a great older Avedon, like the movie would start in his studio and he would just be reflecting on his career and there would be so much to talk about, his early Paris work right through to In the American West

I'm surprised, just at the opening of this video. For one, that it took seeing one cover in a Vogue book of covers for you to recognize Penn. Then, in discussing the work, referring to his backgrounds as 'blank,' when they are so clearly rich in tonality and texture and relief. And then to reference Penn's work as 'looking like Annie Leibovitz' work.... when Penn's clearly existed 50 years earlier. This sounds like the narration of someone who is decidedly _not_ a photographer. On the other hand... recognition of Irving Penn by _anyone_ can only be a good thing, whether late or oddly characterized, and i'm sure this is also new to many in your audience. Sadly.

Penn was an artist, Leibowitz is an artisan. Penn, like Picasso, stole from other artists, his portraits borrow heavily from Peruvian photographer Martin Chambi.
