In his later years Rachmaninoff said that if you put his piano concertos together in a row like parked cars, the first and last are Model-Ts, and the two in the middle are Rolls Royces. I think he exaggerated a bit. But if anyone could make a Model-T into a Rolls, it's Yuja Wang. And viewing and listening to her from the perspective of my age, I realize that she has a brief moment to burn hot and glorious like a meteor before she disappears from the stage. Until then, we who witness her brilliance are truly blessed to experience the beauty that flows from her fiery and delicate fingers.

There are also moments, where I have the impression that she didn't decide yet, how she prefers to play the part at this moment. Sometimes that sounds unsure, sometimes it sounds great, but in any case, it is very strong to can be honest to the piece, to the composer and to herself at this high grade.

She reaches the sublime !!!!! I have never heard this concerto played like this ... here everything, absolutely everything becomes clear, we understand each note and each meander of the harmony and the counterpoint, however complex they may be ... and yet we cannot never lose this mysterious nocturnal atmosphere either, this twilight light which seems to melt the images and sounds into the night which is gradually falling on the earth ... it's hallucinating and even the gtand Rachmaninoff, the composer himself did not know how to fill his own concertos in such an exceptional way!!!!!!!

Ah yes, good and tasteful piano playing is when the pianist does not show any facial movements and does not jump up and down on the piano bench. So, according to your standard of value, all other pianists before Wang gave a tasteless performance, such as Horowitz, Richter, Gilels, Ashkenazy, Bronfman, Sokolov, to name only the Russians who played Rachmaninov's concertos. Your highbrow claim is based, after all, on the fact that you see video recordings. The Russian pianists listed, unlike Wang, did not become acquainted with this technique in their youth and could not adjust to your demands. Moreover, unlike Wang, they could not wrap a crocheted curtain around their bodies and show a lot of skin. On the other hand, they delighted willing listeners with their art.
By the way: on a CD, one does not see the lively expressions of the pianists that you criticise. When I listen to my CDs with recordings of the Rachmaninov concertos, soloist D. Trifonov, I hear only music. Therefore, the criterion you mentioned - no grimaces, no jumping up and down on the piano bench - is obsolete for CDs. A comment that is somehow not thought through.

      Noch eins: ich spiele zur Zeit;
Bach: Präludium und Fuge cis- moll Wt.Kl.1,4
      Beethoven op.110
      Chopin: op10,1 und 12
      op25,1 und 12.
      Liszt: 3.Liebestraum und Mazeppa
      -Etude

Brilliant, tender, dynamic first movement..the cadenza as musical and exciting as it gets. Pianist and orchestra as one. 2nd Movement, Ms Wang explores the counter harmonies in the left hand exquisitely. The audio mix here seems to have a slight overabundance of horn/winds to the left. Maybe just mic placement. Not a real issue. That said, it is a joy to hear the composer's FINAL scoring so clearly delineated throughout. Lovely. 3rd Movement. As you'd expect, technically brilliant by both Ms Wang and the orchestra. The full-bodied nature of the orchestra playing, coupled with the closer sound really gives you the immersive feeling of being there. For me, this concerto shows me something from Ms Wang I occasionally desired from her playing...patience..let the spaces be, allow the resolution of a section resolve in a broader manner. Shew is near perfect here. Her pedaling is really on point. Also At 25:30 (and in the earlier iteration of this section), her pointing of the counter melody shines. Again, Maestro Bychkov really brings out all the sometimes hidden delicacies of the orchestration. Bravo, all the way around.

This concerto was his graduation piece from the Moscow Conservatory in 1891 and whilst SVR did not play it again in its original form; its dedicatee Alexander Siloti played it regularly. SVR WAS dissatisfied with the original version and what we hear is his 1917 rewrite. Whilst not as popular as 2&3, No1 is better known and played more than the 4th which went through a couple of rewrites before he recorded it in 1941 and has never really found a home in the concert repertory.

I can read through the first and second movement. The Cadenza is at least possible for me. Less so the last movement. Yuja's performance is beyond imagination. It is clear without being rushed. She has no need to "double to the speed of difficult passagework to get through it." A minimum of sustaining pedal.
Musically, it is hard to separate her physical beauty from the way she plays this. I think I heard her singing it in some sections, but not sure. Her second movement starts out at half tempo, which adds so much to its beauty.
I am not sure i can find a better performance anywhere or by anyone else.

The beginning of Rachmaninoff's youth work is a demonstration of fulminant power, which is followed by the preparation of the melancholy main theme. Wang's further interpretation leaves nothing to be desired: technically stupendous, colourful, soulful in every detail. First brutal, then tender and then bombastic, the cadenza of the first movement, the solo at the beginning of the middle movement, as if in a jazz club. It is beautiful to see how the orchestra musicians are enraptured by the creative power of the Chinese soloist.

Yuja is a gift from heaven and this concerto is stunningly beautiful. The cadenza at the end of the first movement is absolutely exotic in its conception, for several seconds it seems like it will never end and you are in it forever. Would love to know what the 18th century enlightenment philosophers would think if they could have heard it.

What a gorgeous performance of this gorgeous concerto! She clearly loves it, and now, thanks to Yuja, so do I. It took me forever to finish the time stamps above because I just kept playing every section over and over.
If you can get to Philadelphia early next year, Yuja Wang will play all 4 Concertos and the Paganini Rhapsody with Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the Philadelphia Orchestra (Rachmaninov’s favorite).
And later, they go to New York to perform the whole cycle again at Carnegie Hall.
These concerts celebrate Rachmaninov’s 150th birthday, and I imagine they will be a high point in Yuja Wang’s already illustrious career.

Trying to describe what you hear (music) seems a waste of time, at times: music speaks for itself… It can be fun, though. So, sometimes I succumb to the temptation, and sometimes I just listen… It’s hard to believe that this piano concerto was composed by a teenager (1891). But it’s true and it is irrefutable proof of how brilliant a musician Rachmaninoff was… I have to say that even though his 2nd piano concerto is his most popular one, I have always liked the first and second movements of this one (1st one) best. The third movement is very interesting as well, but not as easy to digest as the other ones (probably a little bit too modern). I like the third movement of his 2nd concerto more (my favorite). The main theme of the first movement is dramatic and so beautiful (have always loved it) and the way he developed it in the cadenza is just genius: It’s one of the best cadenzas ever composed. It’s pretty challenging but Ms.Wang’s interpretation is accurate, solid, and passionate, she plays it (and the whole concerto) with gusto… I love the tempos. The second movement is so romantic, tender, and even sensual. To be honest, Yuja Wang’s piano concerto performances is what I enjoy the most (of her), it seems that the accompaniment (orchestra ) is the hypnotic spell that always brings out the best of her sensitivity… Great conducting and orchestra, too. Bravi, everyone!!!!
PS White is so elegant, this dress’ fabric somehow reminds me of the beauty of Egyptian queens…
