Yuja Wang brilliantly completed her first cycle of the three Bartók piano concertos - the Second on Thursday and Friday; the Third on Saturday and Sunday - the latest step for the 30-year-old virtuoso on the path to possibly becoming one of the world’s most important pianists. Gustavo Dudamel surrounded the concertos with alluringly eerie accounts of Stravinsky’s “Symphonies of Wind Instruments” and spectacular ones of Janácek’s brassy Sinfonietta." Yuja Wang has only one person to measure with in the world of classic music, Yuja herself, no one else to compare with so uniquely talented she is, a kind of lonely situation which is the currency of most great artists. What a marvellous gift to humanity for everyone to hear and see her playing, it gives hope in a world of hopeless politics saturated with interminable social conflicts.

Never know Chopin's Preludes played as a whole can be this fabulous, this profound. The acoustic is so good. The performance is absolutely out of this world. How is she received by the critics and the rest of the classical music world? Also I have to admit seeing her image many times on UA-cam but ignored her because what I saw in the images looked to me like an excess of shtick. But then, with nothing better to do, I finally gave her a watch/listen and it was a revelation. The impression her attire makes doesn't prepare you for the artist she is. But then I realized; she's an artist so why shouldn't she be bold and unique in her choice of clothing? I've come to realize that aside from the marketing value this brings, it is also a genuine part of her personality; she dresses provocatively outside the concert hall as well. And when I really thought about it I realized but of course she wears what she does, she brings that same unorthodox energy to her playing.

Chopin is the epitomy of lyricism: His music calls for the finest and most delicate touch on the piano keys, and a reflective air. To use Karl Gustav Jung's terms,Chopin is an introvert. Yuja Want is an extrovert. She is bursting vigor. There is even something agressive in her touch. She often attacks the piano keys. She is wonderful in stormy music, and a great virtuoso. As a Chopinist, I love Valentina Igoshina.

Her harsh sound when she plays loud is unfortunately always the same whatever composer she plays. And of course inappropriate in Chopin. She said herself in a (written) interview that she feels bored with Mozart and Chopin (and I think it must be the same with Schumann). interesting perspective, but i think you are right. memorisation doesn't happen on the note-level, it is indeed something you can "hear" in your mind. personally, when i memorise, it never takes conscious effort, it's just a by product of practice. i am sure it's like that for yuja as well. I'm not sure how other people memorise though, note-by-note? i'm not sure.

I don't find memorizing pieces hard. I almost start doing it as soon as I start to learn a piece so I don't have to waste my focus on the score, though I admit that I am a bit unusual that way as I am not much above an intermediate player who could only play about half these preludes. I don't believe the memorization itself represents another level, but it certainly helps achieve better music, for me at least.

For years Ms. Wang has had all the chops. I met her 11 years ago when she played here for our recital series. She electrified our audience and is now maturing into one of the all time greats.
These Preludes are exceptional. I can't understand people critical of her playing except for total ignorance. I might like the first Prelude in C Major the best. I never want it to end. I've never heard it played quite like that. I just loved it. Same with No. 12 in G# minor. For my taste...the best. I love it when artists step up and show me something unique and special. Ms. Wang does that for me.
This provacotive attire thing is much to do about nothing as far as I'm concerned.
BTW, I recently listened to the Pletnev Chopin preludes from 2011 I believe posted here on UA-cam. They are like Ms. Wang unique in their own right. Extraordinary artistry!

Chopin Preludes are exceptionally beautiful but the best recording of them is Ivan Moravec and hasn't been surpassed yet. Yuja Wang doesn't reach half of the depth of his interpretation. She is a fantastic pianist for modern and contemporary music but in romantic repertoire she is often totally lost on the musical level (even here the sound becomes harsh when she plays loud and the whole thing sounds quite cold). As musical critics said in "The Guardian" (UK 2022) "Wang's flamboyance and virtuosity doesn't always convey a real sense of what music is about, but in works such as Ligeti's Études she is irrésistible". Totally agree with that statement : in Bartok, Ligeti, Kapustin and contemporary composers she is fantastic and not many pianists can play these so difficult pieces. But for the rest she brings lots of joy to many people who enjoy watching a lively young woman and her sexy dresses contribute to bring them the entertainment they expect. There's nothing wrong about that, that's how marketing works, but being "the most famous pianist" doesn't make her "the best pianist". Let's not forget that the most important artist is the composer...

@@nickk8416 Actually the musical critic Dave from "Classics today" (if you know that channel) explained in one of his videos that nowadays some people want to hear something "different". I guess you are part of listeners who appreciate that. Personally I don't understand this because Chopin hasn't changed, he is not different. And the beautiful details of his music will appear even (or maybe even more I would say) if they are part of the general structure, there is no need to put them into our face at a 20 cm distance. But these are 2 different ways of appreciating music...😉. Anyway Mrs Wang said herself in a (written) interview in Paris that she felt bored with Mozart and Chopin music. These are not her favorites at all. I think no pianist can be at his best in all composers and all periods of music so nothing bad about this. (And it doesn't mean part of the audience can't like it anyway. That's something so personal and subjective).

The New York Times Review. Yuja Wang Plays Dazed Chaos, Then 7 Encores By Zachary Woolfe May 18, 2018 The usual praise for a musician who plays a recital in a big hall is that he or she makes that big hall feel small.
But on Thursday, the pianist Yuja Wang made Carnegie Hall seem even vaster than normal: big, empty, lonely. Through her concert’s uncompromisingly grim first half and its wary, stunned second, Ms. Wang charted wholly dark, private emotions. She was in no way hostile toward an adoring (if slightly disoriented) audience, but neither did she seem at all interested in seducing it.
After the playbills had been printed, Ms. Wang - who will have a Perspectives series at Carnegie next season - revised her program. She subtracted two of the four Rachmaninoff preludes she’d planned to give before intermission and added an extra three of his later, even less scrutable Études-Tableaux. Ms. Wang played none of these pieces in a way that made them seem grounded or orderly; she even seemed to want to run the seven together in an unbroken, heady minor-key span, a choice that most - but not enough - of the audience respected by not clapping in between.
Even divided by light applause, these pieces blurred into and stretched toward one another. Doing nothing that felt exaggerated or overwrought, Ms. Wang emphasized unsettled harmonies and de-emphasized melodic integrity. The Étude-Tableau, in E-flat Minor (Op. 33, No. 6) wasn’t the juxtaposition of one hand’s abstraction and the other’s clear etching. No, she was telling two surreal tales at once. The martial opening of the Prelude in G Minor (Op. 23, No. 5) swiftly unraveled into something woozy and bewildering. The washes of sound in the Étude-Tableau in C Minor (Op. 39, No. 1) were set alongside insectlike fingerwork - neurotic, insistent, claustrophobic.
      ...
Her bending of the line in the Étude-Tableau in B Minor (Op. 39, No. 4) felt like the turning of a widening gyre, infusing the evocation of aristocratic nostalgia with anxiety. (Rachmaninoff composed most of the works Ms. Wang played as World War I loomed and unfolded, and the 19th century finally ended.) The stretched-out, washed-out quality of melancholy in her account of the Étude-Tableau in C Minor (Op. 33, No. 3), made that sorrow seem more like resignation: The loneliness she depicted felt familiar to her, even comfortable.
The prevailing mood - dreamlike sadness; a feeling of being lost; rushing through darkness - continued in what followed. The relentless trills and tremolos of Scriabin’s Sonata No. 10 - which is sometimes played lusciously but was here diffuse and gauzy - glittered angrily. Three Ligeti etudes from the 1980s and ’90s proved that Rachmaninoff and Scriabin, as she presented them, were presentiments of the modernism of the distant future.
There was the sense that more time than just 20 minutes - decades, perhaps - had elapsed during intermission, after which Ms. Wang played Prokofiev’s Sonata No. 8, composed during World War II. Here, playing with guarded poise, Ms. Wang seemed to inhabit a kind of aftermath of the dazed chaos she had depicted in the early-20th-century works on the first half. The contours were sharper now, the colors brighter and bolder. The effect was still unnerving.
I considered whether Ms. Wang’s flamboyant clothes - in the first half, a floor-length purple gown with only a slash of sparkle covering her breasts; in the second, a tiny iridescent turquoise dress with vertiginous heels - were the right costume here. They did give the impression that she had arrived alone, a disconcerting combination of powerful and vulnerable, at a not particularly appealing party. In that sense they were a fitting complement to her ominous vision of this music.
Likewise, it seemed at first that a few of her seven - yes, seven - encores jarred with the forlorn mood she’d built up. Vladimir Horowitz’s “Carmen” fantasia, an Art Tatum stride version of “Tea for Two,” a demented arrangement of Mozart’s “Rondo alla Turca” - all were blazingly performed but had a touch of cheerful kitsch about them. But perhaps they, too, were of a piece with the intoxication that permeated the recital.
      ...
And by the end, as she followed the “Mélodie” from Gluck’s “Orfeo ed Euridice” with Schubert’s “Gretchen am Spinnrade,” Ms. Wang finally seemed to have found a measure of real, hard-earned peace.

Hehe! "Sex, Drugs and Rock 'n' Roll" generation ??? Well this is red light district piano playing for sure, i hope they
keep wet wipes handy for the players that must use that stool after
these escorts. Play on gals, make that money!!! :-)
She is Amsterdam red light district , mediocre classical pianist, she
and Khatia Buniatishvili, i think they try to compensate for their lack of talent, i
think they are both overrated and need a book on etiquette badly. I am
not a prude but these chicks look like they carry a supply of penicillin
with them, they can't be taken seriously, neither is pretty, so i
assume the dressing is used to distract the people from their looks, and
Khatia with all the phony hair flipping which is so unauthentic. I am
not being mean just real, we all like pretty things and they could be
sexy without looking classically hookerish, someone should tell them,
but i think they have been told and don't care, they look like rough
      broads. :-) !!!

It's disgusting. I think she has a heck of a lot of talent, she can certainly play piano better than I can, and she chooses to objectify herself. We don't live in the days when women were told and expected by shifty managers to take it all off or else, and she's setting things back with this kind of dress.
I really dislike that word "prude" since there's no way I'd dress like that or even close, but that would earn me the label from some people.
I don't care for formal dress either since that generally isn't the most comfortable, particularly when having to put on a performance. I'd rather dress in my usual clothes. Because I'd be there to put on music, not a fashion show, and I always make sure whatever I wear is suitable for being out in the general public.
Having said all that, here is an interesting article, debunking feminist claims of gender bias when it comes to classicall music performance. Feminists and mgtow would actually be the biggest supporters of Yuja 'wang's choice of dress, for two different reasons.
      blog.twedt.com/archives/1365
Annoyingly, on another video where Maria Yudina was performing, her interpretation of the music didn't go over that well with some listeners, and then this jerk came along and whinged about how people just didn't like her because she was a woman. What bullcrap.

Yuja Wang brilliantly completed her first cycle of the three Bartók piano concertos - the Second on Thursday and Friday; the Third on Saturday and Sunday - the latest step for the 30-year-old virtuoso on the path to possibly becoming one of the world’s most important pianists. Gustavo Dudamel surrounded the concertos with alluringly eerie accounts of Stravinsky’s “Symphonies of Wind Instruments” and spectacular ones of Janácek’s brassy Sinfonietta." Oh poor , mentally ill sexist Mario/Georges! ;-)

Wow - (Playing AND outfit) I've heard the Preludes numerous times by numerous artists - Kissin (too fast), Rubinstein (very good), Ashkenazy (masterful), Trifonov (my favorite besides Wang),etc. I can imagine Chopin hearing this and saying, "Yes, this is how I meant them to sound!"
The C major (1st) was slower than the norm but allowed all the Bach-like sonorities. The quiet opening of the F sharp minor (what a gorgeous development!) The G-Sharp Minor is without a doubt the best version out there - fiery yet artistic. The G flat Major was ravishing. I think both she and Trifonov share the aesthetics of the great masters where artistry was just as important as virtuosity.

It is a pity that most of the comments refer contemptuously to Yuja's dress and not to her extraordinary ability as a pianist. They do not see her beauty, gracefulness, joyous and relaxed attitude when she enjoy playing piano with great mastery.
How her appearance could influence her interpretive capacity?
    Otherwise her dresses are beautiful.

desperate when she wears gowns of this nature, however for those who are

I firmly believe that Yuja is overall the greatest classical pianist performing today. However, she lacks a feel for jazz. It is played technically very well, but lacks any kind of jazz vibe (which the best performances do exhibit).

While not in agreement with that other guy: Her rendition of Rhapsody in Blue. Really, I don't want to hear her trying her hand in jazz. Too many jazz pianist criticize classical pianist for not knowing what they are doing. However. If she does ( did ). I would prefer a performance of Gershwin's concerto in F. So much more expansive. Rugged writing in which she shines. The F Major would tell whether or not she has a feel for the genre. Plus, there's that great recording by Earl Wild for her to study with prior to performing the piece. Also, the ( especially) " I've got rhythm" by him. And Oscar Levant's old recording. Then, maybe a year or two. She could go all out. Studying all those modes, jazz scales. Blues and Latin styles. Then, hopefully. She wouldn't fall in love with the stuff. And leave off of the classical world forever. Right now?? I want to hear her playing J.S. Bach. Or, Max Reger's ' Variations on a Theme by Bach ' . Ending with that massive fugue.

Ms. Wang's ability to draw out of her one instrument the sound of an entire orchestra mystifies me! It's as if she is being accompanied and yet is playing with an exquisite melancholy her sole piano in such a way that reveals the expansive and yet almost filigree instrumentation of M. Chopin. It is at once startlingly simple and as complex as Poland and her fraught history is. Again, we sit mesmerized by her playing which is carved out delicately from silence.

😳 Did you ever listen to other pianists playing these Chopin Preludes then??? Ivan Moravec is known as having made the best recording of them and Yuja Wang's playing doesn't reach half of the depth his interpretation... Try and come back on Earth afterwards 😊. Yuja Wang is fantastic in modern and contemporary repertoire but certainly not in the romantic one. As musical critics in The Guardian (UK 2022) wrote "Wang's flamboyance and virtuosity doesn't always convey a real sense of what music is about, but in works such as Ligeti's Études she is irrésistible". Totally agree with that statement. But Yuja Wang brings joy to many people beacuse she is a lively young woman and her sexy dresses add an extra flavor for many people (men especially). There's nothing bad about this, but it doesn't make her "the best pianist in the World", just "the most famous one". Let's not forget that the real artist is the composer...
