the stunt was done by walter "jay" milligan his company JMproductions is about 3 miles from my house . you walk in the front door and theres the red hornet , all shinny and nice . up until the summer of 2017 - the corkscrew ramps sat behind the building all rotted and painted white . jmproductions had an auto thrill show that competed with joey chitwood in the 70s . the past 25 years that I know of they been promoting demo derbys at county fairs . while jmproductions invented & promoted the "astro spiral stunt" their hired driver for the tailand shoot was Loren "bumps" Willert

Sadly, by 1974 you couldn't get a 360 with a 4-speed. No 4-speeds at all in Hornets until 1977 and even then, only on the 6-cylinder cars. You could still order the 360 V8, but it was strangled by a 2-barrel, single exhaust and available only with an automatic transmission. Those were dark times for AMC.

The police cars were Matador sedans - my first car was a $600 1971 AMC Ambassador sedan, very similar. It was indestructible, had snow tires on the back (had Montana plates when I bought it in Texas) and no hubcaps. The used car lot was so embarrassed by it they had it parked halfway into a ditch on the side of the property - not even a sign on it. I showed up on a moped and asked what they had for cheap, and the guy shrugged and pointed over at it. I paid $200 a month for 3 months and it was mine. Great first car, even in 1987!

Spot the Holdens from Australia. 2:54 The grey sedan - next to the maroon car, is a 1962 Holden EJ series. 3:21 The blue sedan with white roof, behind Bond is a 1967 Holden HR series. 4:04 The light green sedan in front of Scaramunga's Matador X, is a Holden LC series Torana. 4:06 The cream sedan, between the white and red cars is a 1970 Holden Kingswood HG series. Parked against the curb is a Matador sedan police car. 4:11 must have done the same take again, Bond passes in between the same Torana and Kingswood. 4:36 same Torana and Kingswood again

Great footage and AMC product placement. However, I spotted a small error--after the pursuit ends we see Scaramanga's Matador take off up into the sky, looking closely you will see the jet wing unit sitting on top of the car, this also includes the rear streamlining over the trunk, yet when Miss Goodnight pops open the truck we see the rear of the car with no evidence of the rear flashing of the jet wing, otherwise Miss Goodnight would not be able to open the trunk with the wing unit sitting over it. Excepting Miss Ekland, all the main characters in this clip have passed away.

By 1974 AMC was a joke. The Hornet had gotten a dork-o-matic facelift the previous year. The new Matador coupe was hideously styled 1:30, while the existing Matador sedan got a freakshow level protruding yet blunt nose grafted to it 4:50 . And they hadn't bottomed yet -- the next year would see the AMC Pacer--an all out assault on attractive aesthetics.
It's absolutely ludicrous that someone with the style and taste of James Bond would be seen in an AMC product.
I can only guess the movie producers were style-blind in cars, and/or AMC paid an insane amount for this placement.

It also had to do with the fact that AMC was sponsoring Milligan's stunt team in those years. And so when they had built a car to do the spiral roll originally, they worked it out with an AMC.

I love that darn thing. It proved that AMC was not willing to follow in the footsteps of the Big Three straight into bland and boring oblivion. I have seen them in person and they look even better. It is absolutely brilliant how Dick Teague designed the bumpers to indicate that they were merely a federally mandated appendage and nothing more. It's begging to be removed, just in the same way that the 1950-1951 Studebaker sedans were.

Matador x was a worthy competitor, however the regular matador was a hunk of shit, rusted really fast too, we had a NEW matador as a loaner when parents country squire was wrecked, it had to get jump started several times and eventually the shop towed it out and replaced it with an LTD. The aggressive styling at AMC was pretty cool, just built too cheap

Can someone please explain to me exactly why Sherriff J.W. Pepper was shopping for a new AMC while on vacation in Thailand? Who buys a car on vacation, especially one made in the country they are from? Like, did they not have AMC dealers in Louisiana? Had to fly all the way to Bangkok just to check out the new Javelin? LOL!
