While people continue to debate whether "Reproduction" or "Travelogue" (or both) were it, this EP alone remains their true, ultimately essential early Human League record. Everything here is so sharp, daunting, impressive and remains sounding so frighteningly ahead of its time. Heaven knows where they should have taken The Human League MKI, had it not been for the commercial pressure, ambition, expectations, the upturn, stardom and all...
At the same time highly conceptual as it is a mere croquis of things to (never) come... Traces of such radical experimentalism were audible in some of the both albums' and other singles' material from their early era (the equally stunning "Introducing", "Dreams Of Leaving", or "Dancevision" - the latter actually a survived gem from The Future days), but the conventional song format interfered way too often, resulting in daring but altogether scattered fragments of a futuristic dream that took a different course into the pop charts.
A small, pleasant anomaly in the group's catalogue, this side of Clock DVA they were so closely linked to.
Great post. Nice to see someone give Clock DVA a shout out. This arpeggio gives goosebumps every time. This was an extraordinary track, a wonderful time in the evolution of the band.
Driving on highway in the mid-eighties at the sunset and part 1 at the end of the tape ........... what a great feeling!
such an underrated part of their discography, absolutely love it!
Love the end of the flexi-disc - Multi-Coloured Swap Shop on the TV: "Kid's just swapped a fishing rod for a Dr. Feelgood album."
For me this EP was life changing.
Well put Christopher. It was the same for me 🖤
Me too. The first time I heard this arpeggio I almost cried, just took me to another place. An extraordinary track to this day. Great to see it had such an impact on others too
Same!!!!!!✌✌✌✌
Minute 15. Hilarious.
Legendary Early Phase !!!
Fantasy ~ Awakening ...
They became Pop *
That first 2 minutes of Part 3 always sent shivers down my back with the raw power of the synths being played. I was 16 then, am 60 as i type this and it still has the same effect. Utterly beguiling and totally the best incarnation of The Human League
Yes
Been searching for this for decades!
Thx WWW... And a nerdy Friend:
Try those very early Heaven17, too?
...long before Pop & Funk...
(Sry, have no link/titles)
Yeah, I met Phil Oakley And the girls on my own in RTÉ Studios Dublin in 1996. Had a quick chat and he signs the bootleg album That I had called Drumset mystery of a live gig ticket in Milan the 1981. I still have that and his signature on it.
I’m still waiting for the 12 inch disco version of Yuri Gagarin having a cup of Tea.
It’s so martial! I would use this as a soundtrack to “War of the Worlds”
It has 1970s Dr Who written all over it!
It is properly scary, edgy music, as the above should indicate - the soothing idyllic promises of Kraftwerk are not to be found here; more so the machinery of the Italian futurists, Forbidden Planet, Clockwork Orange (of course!) and the bleeps, alarms and sirens of Varese and Stockhausen.
I still have the 12 inch (although the flexi got folded in half somehow) which I bought in 1980 as a precocious 13 year old! I would play it at 33 rpm to hear the details and it seemed to work at the slower tempo, too.
Was like they had the right idea, almost 90's trance/techno, just a bit more messy and nobody was ready for that yet in 1979, acid house wasn't gonna be a thing until 7 years later, this has held up quite well.
One of my favourite tracks was the original year of the Jetpacks, which has a similar vibe to this
Year of the Jetpacks is amazing
In The beggining there was the human league .....fact
They were cool
Is that yuri gegarin, the first man to orbit the Earth, a Russian cosmonaut on the cover
Gagarin, yes -- ''Hero of Socialist Labour''
Yeah, I still have my copy and the little plastic disc 7 inch that came with it. Where are they are discussing the release
Much of this feels like a playful overture to Toyota City. Love it. Flexi cracks me up. Phil seems to be quite perturbed.
According to the Travelogue cover, Toyota City was recorded in 1978, so it predates ‘Dignity of Labour’. I always wondered who would listen to the flexi more than once, it’s definitely the work of earnest young men!!
PS Toyota City is their most beautiful piece of music though.
