- Dr. Jordan Rogers continues preaching through The Book of Genesis in this sermon from Genesis 34:1-31 entitled, "Life in a Lawless Land."
Lawlessness leads to defilement and death.
When Jacob brings his family back into the Promised Land, he is immediately confronted with lawlessness as his only daughter, Dinah, is raped by a man named Shechem. Thinking his sin was hidden, Shechem requests marriage to Dinah. Jacob and his sons are aware of the assault and Jacob’s sons plot and execute vengeance for their sister for this heinous crime. Lawlessness leads only and always to defilement and death.
This passage of Scripture presents a very difficult challenge, as we see what is was like to live life in a lawless land. The events in this record precede the Law of Moses by many hundreds of years, and yet there is already an understanding of right and wrong, of crime and of punishment, evidencing clearly that “the work of the law is written on their hearts” (Romans 2:15).
The following is a sermon from Genesis 34:1-31 and below you will find the video recording and a sermon outline to help you follow along as you watch. I hope this study tool helps you grow in your love for the Lord Jesus and in your obedience to Him.

I am a returning believer … not a bible scholar, however can: first Corinthians 2:14 support the message about marriage with unbelievers? (This happen to be Verse of the Day #NIV).
Maybe u need to clarify but there is absolutely nothing godly abt humans putting other humans to death, regardless of reasoning. Vengeance is God’s, not ours. I was already feeling uneasy and that was really the icing on the cake for me 🤷🏽♀️
Affirming the penalty of death for heinous crimes, especially murder, is 100% biblical and holds up the unique value of humanity and the glory of our Creator.
Genesis 9:5-6
[5] And for your lifeblood I will require a reckoning: from every beast I will require it and from man. From his fellow man I will require a reckoning for the life of man.
[6] “Whoever sheds the blood of man,
by man shall his blood be shed,
for God made man in his own image.
