The best way to learn any dance is to practice the elements that make up that dance, much like practicing your scales on a piano. If you learn to read music and you learn your scales, you can play any song put in front of you. Same type of thing when it comes to the different styles of swing. If you understand some basic swing elements you can put them together a lot like Legos to make up the different style of swing. Some of those elements are walking, touch-stepping, triple stepping, and kick-ball-changes. Let's just do that in place.
Just walk in place. Doesn't matter what foot you start with, just walk. Feel what that walking rhythm feels like. Now we want to make sure we're over our feet, not back here marching behind our feet, right? We're dancing over our feet, right? So there's walking.
Then there's touch-stepping. Touch, step, touch, step. When get comfortable touch-stepping don't just do it underneath you. Touch to the side, touch forward and back. Get comfortable just moving around.
And then of course we have our triple steps as well. Triple step underneath you, right? Triple step going sideways. I would even triple step going forward and back. Right? Just getting comfortable with what that rhythm feels like.
Then we have our kick-ball-change. Kick, ball (it's the ball of the foot), change. From the side that goes kick, ball change, kick, ball change. You can even do it with both feet. Kick, ball change, kick, ball change. Again, kick, ball change, kick, ball change.
If you don't pick the foot up it's touch-ball-change. Touch, ball change, touch, ball change, as opposed to a kick-ball-change. Some movement, just looks a little bit different because I'm not picking the foot up. So we're going to go ahead and take those elements and put them to music. You want to practice them a lot so that you can draw upon them as necessary when you're doing the different varieties of swing. We're going to do it to music right now.

:) I'm musician, music teacher and learning dance 2 years. Please stop being so negative and listen to what he is saying. These steps you will apply in your dances. And West Coast Swing steps are applied in today's music too. Also see the videos where he talks a little about the history of Swing Dances. (Sorry my english. I'm from Brazil, portuguese language) He is a good teacher and we can learn a lot from him. :)

Excellent segway into swing dance! I remember Mario Robau used to have us do a warm up before class just doing basic element footwork. It was fun but also, helped with the footwork and rhythm.

he's a former world champion in West Coast swing, which has a variety of different music styles to dance to, including funk/jazz. Just type in his name: Robert Roysten and you will see his dancing in action to all different songs.

He is swing dancing.... or at least doing the basic steps for West Coast Swing...you can pretty much swing dance to almost all types of music (preferably 4/4 timing) Yes. You can dance to funk with West Coast Swing. Jazz... Contemporary... Top 40s music...etc. I think a more accurate title should be Basic Swing Dance : Footwork drills... because this is essentially what this video is.

We'll swing isn't hard to learn if you watch people dance to electro swing they don't take a course
All you need to know is feel the rhythm and then just be brave enough to just move swing that body move that body let your body do what it wants no further steps

I'm trying to find a credible source for basic swing dance. Wveryone is so critical in all of the videos I've found. Would the people who know better please recommend a better source?
Frankie Manning has some vids on here. most of its Lindy Hop which is a bit more advanced if youve never danced before but he teaches in such a way with a lil practice it should feel natural. hope that helps
there is so many types for swing. i.e. west coast, east coast, lindy, electro, funk. people get upset if its not the exact type they are used to. but as long as you are having fun and enjoy the music you are om the right track.
The unfortunate truth is that you won't find any good instruction for swing dances on UA-cam or any video platform... far better to find an instructor. The few good videos out there will supplement your knowledge, but its not a good idea to try to learn exclusively online- especially since swing (every variety, be it Lindy Hop, East Coast, Charleston or Balboa) is primarily a lead-and-follow dance; so having people to dance WITH is critical for learning.
You can check out lindy ladder, syncopated city, rebecca brightly. All are youtube channels

Me and my girlfriend were looking for some emergency advice on how to jazz dance in a couple before a ball, the thumbnail for your video shows two people jazz dancing, however, there is only one person in the video, needless to say, we feel both hurt and betrayed and I can't speak for my girlfriend, but I'm not sure I will ever be able to trust again

I guess your definition of "swing" music is way different than a musicians. Good information though. Although I guess this said nothing about swing music, you can "swing dance" to different types of music, like funky R&B as shown in the video.

Swing dance : Rock, roll, a jump-jump, rock, roll, the cheese now, on to the cheese a jump-jump, back to the crust a jump-jump, under the bridge a jump-jump, under the bridge, a boogie walk, 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12. Thats what we learned at school for 5th grade cause we’re in this program called heart of dance. p.s our performance is on Monday 19/18 1 like= wish me luck! (I’m doing a dance called the meringue and maybe the foxtrot)
