Not sure about any of this, but I've had 4 cats that lived 20 years+ eating raw beef, squirrel, rabbit and chicken meat..some grass too and Friskies treats for fun. I mean, they aren't going to live forever, but it seems like a raw meat diet is what they evolved to.
I really like the interviews! Thanks Dr. Alex!
My beloved kitty Kara Dara Diva Princess would not eat wet food. But she drank a ton of water so I thought she was ok. She did get a UTI once when she was around 5 yrs old and the vet cleared it with antibiotics. The vet never gave her the blood test that will show the true condition of the kidney's. And when she was ten years old she got another UTI and the vet once again gave her antibiotics..but no blood test. Her symptoms cleared up and I thought she was fine. But a month later she stopped eating for three days. I took her to the Animal Medical Center hospital in NYC and was informed that she was in kidney failure and would not recover. I went into shock. I had my regular vet back in CT put her in their hospital to try to flush and restart her kidney's. It didn't work..after three day's I brought her home and had to start her on regular the under the skin hydration..but she never got better. I had to force feed her with a syringe but she mostly did not swallow. She lived only a couple months from the diagnosis. She was such a trooper and would drag herself all over the apt to her regular hangout spots and chill.. as if determined to have her usual routine. After that kidney flush she could barely hold her head up..but after the vet gave her potassium pills..her head came back up. She was drinking bucket loads of water as her kidney's were still in failure and did not function properly. She even tried to jump in the bathtub with me to hydrate herself. Finally one day her hind legs gave out and I took her to the vet...she hated getting into a carrier but that day she jumped in it on her own. The vet said to not take her back home as she would not be able to walk again. So I had to put my baby to sleep that day. She was so ready to go ...she just drifted off to a peaceful sleep. And then he gave her the second dose to stop her heart. I was holding her with my ear to her chest. I heard a puff of air. It was her last breath leaving her body. 💔. My Kara..my sweet baby girl lives on forever in my heart forever. Please get your kitty the blood test at around five years old (even if the vet doesn't suggest so) that shows the true condition of the kidney's..and not just bladder. It's possible that they can live longer on a special kidney diet if the kidney's are bad. Thank you for reading this long post. It was therapeutic for me. I hope it help's someone. ❤️
Truly heartbreaking. I'm so sorry you and she had to go through this. Thank you for posting. I hope someone who needs to see this will be helped.

Sorry for your loss.
Thank you so much your post is very beneficial ... heartbreaking but you did the best for your cat. ❤
I feed my cats wet and dry 😁
me too!
Why does my cat stop eating after it eats dry cat food added to it's wet food after a couple days ,Would kidney failure have anything to do with it?
Great interview Dr. Alex! I am a big fan of dry food because it is inexpensive and convenient, perfect for feeding my cats in the morning when they wake me up. At the same time, I do give them wet food in the evening so that just in case any of them develop a condition where wet food is necessary, they will be ready to eat it. The stigma around dry food sort of reminds me of the stigma around diet soda in the weight loss/fitness community - there really isn't much evidence that it is harmful but because of the perception that many people have, announcing you like it the way I just did can put a target on your back 😆
Absolutely, just watch the comments on this video repeat the feeding conspiracies that are floating around the internet!
Greetings to you doctors, thank you for these information, however, logically I believe that dry food doesn't contain a proper amount of water which any living beings need it , when my feline consumes an amount of dry food per day I have to make sure that he/ she takes a good amount of water, it causes inconvenient situation.
nor does the video say that the food provides enough moisture by itself. Fresh water should always be available no matter what you feed your cat
Hi 👋 Dr Alex I have Arnold on iv fluids at home my vet gave him the medication Tuesday to stop Arnold's body from producing calcium for six weeks now it's just a matter of keeping him hydrated and trying to flush the toxins out of his body and hopefully he will eat again and won't be nausea but so far it's a very hard challenge but I'm going to do everything in my power to help him I'm so worried beyond words really..take care Dr Alex well I forgot to mention but Arnold of course was watching this video with me.
I've just seen your other message David, I'm so sorry for your loss 💔
Do you think cats should or shouldn't have grains in the dry kibble ?
have you seen my posting schedule?! I've got a video addressing this in a couple of weeks, but you can get the preview here - ourpetshealth.com/podcast/what-to-feed-a-cat
I had a friend that worked for one of the big food companies that controls all the super market processed foods. While it appears there are many different brands and products they are all controlled by a couple of companies. If you knew what went it to kibble you wouldnt fee it to your cats. The fact that it has a shelf life of years should be the first warning sign. What would cats eat in nature ?
Yeah, ‘cos cats in the wild eat dry food all the time right? I’ve often seen the kings of the jungle chowing down on a bucket of Kibble on those Richard Attenborough docs. Dry food is bad for them, pure and simple. It’s processed junk, that doesn’t contain enough protein. The cat version of a Happy Meal basically. It contains carbs, vegetable matter, soy derivatives, etc and long term consumption leads to kidney failure, renal failure, obesity, UTIs, etc. You’re essentially teaching owners to end the lives of their cats early. Give them wet food, or raw meat, that’s literally all they need to eat. In the wild, the blood from the meat hydrates them, which is why they don’t need to drink as much. If you don’t want to give them raw meat because of parasites, feed them wet food from cans, preferably red meat such as beef, liver, lamb, venison, etc. And always have clean water next to them! DO NOT FEED THEM DRY FOOD!
Can you provide some studies for us please? yourlogicalfallacyis.com/appeal-to-nature
@@OurPetsHealthI didn’t argue that wet food is “natural”, but it’s the closest thing to “natural” that domestic cats are going to get. You don’t get wet food packets in the wild do you? Look, the literature is out there regarding this issue, but I’m not an academic, vet or cat dietician. Just Google it for God’s sake! Go ahead and feed them dry food, if that’s what you want to do, but it’s well known that dry food is no substitute for wet food, and WILL cause these issues later in the cat’s life. It’s just a matter of time! It’s like saying there is no evidence that eating McDonalds everyday causes diseases in humans but I think it’s common sense and stupidly obvious that it eventually will. I’m not sure why you want to push this “dry food is fine” narrative upon cat owners, it’s exactly the same narrative that made my cat die young from kidney failure at a relatively early age. Shame on you!
There will be plenty of evidence McDonalds is bad for you. If it's so easy to just Google it and not just cherry pick a blog post (which isn't evidence by the way) then can you just put the links here. You admit that you have no training in this are and yet are so certain you know better than a veterinary nutritionist who is literally referring to scientific studies.
Our cats will not drink water, we have to add to their food and also kibble is crap, veterinarians actually do not know much about diet. They are not educated in diet and food, let's get real
@@courtneyalva 100%%%%
@@courtneyalva Dr. Alex knows a lot about veterinary nutrition - check out his video on raw vs kibble for a full overview.
I make plain bland chicken broth and add it to dry food. The stray cats have been loving it 🤷♀️
So Dr. LaFlamme who is a board-certified nutritionist with a PhD in clinical nutrition doesn't know much about diet? Vets are not able to continue to learn through their career but a pet parent is? It's easy to repeat theories heard online without actually presenting any evidence to support them or the fact that any of the information presented is false...lets get real!
@@OurPetsHealth then tell your board certified nutritionist and every other vet to stop contradicting themselves with one minute dry is ok and the it's not. Those online people are you both and others, I work with a holistic pet vet and trust me, it's all a mess and uninformed
Could not disagree more with this lady.
Same. I don’t agree with her. Dry food is not great for cats on a regular basis. Most cat owners will rationalize feeding dry food regularly based upon cost and convenience.
@@jetsetter883 keeps them dehydrated so at risk of crystals, cystitis & blocking, does not clean their teeth and full of junk ingredients - where's the meat?
@@alisonthomas4511 The ingredients are definitely bad. The Costco dry food is decent but I only give it to my cat seldomly. I also try to increase his water intake by rinsing the chicken I give to him under the faucet before serving. Always trying to find new ways to add water to his diet : )
What about a cat with kidney damage and eating kidney dry food?
feeding a prescription kidney diet (wet or dry) has been shown to about double the life expectancy of cats with kidney failure. It is also important that there is always a good supply of water and encouraging your cat to drink is no bad thing. Here are some strategies ua-cam.com/video/OehD3s8vIgU/v-deo.html
A vet pushing dry food..no surprises. The truth is, raw meat is best!
Scientific evidence please to support the fact that you clearly know more than a specialist veterinary nutritionist...
I'd never trust a vet (or doctor for that matter) to know jack shit about proper carnivore food, as they love pushing foods that clearly contain sugar (dextrose and all it's variants) AND complex carbs (that turn into sugar and which then turns to fat, with diebetes risk) to fucking obligate carnivores. "ScIeNtiFiC PaPErS PleAsE", you don't need scientific papers to know an obligate carnivore doesn't eat plants unless it needs to purge its stomach. How fucking dumb do they think we are. Ridiculous. You don't feed plants to an obligate carnivore. PERIOD (this is why no one feeds kibbles to lions, snakes, crocs, etc, who are also obligate carnivores, it's abuse and no amount of self-denial is going to change reality).
