The thing I always found most interesting was not the question of whether or not Lestat had killed Paul, but the fact that Louis admitted that he'd always wondered if Lestat had killed Paul. Louis loved Paul more than anything, but he still stayed with Lestat, loved Lestat, when he thought there was a decent chance that Lestat killed his brother. That's a fascinating level of compartmentalization.

🐺 Passivity. Passivity is the word you're searching for louis. he's depressed yes, but Louis has this tendency to turn passive when he's facing a big problem. It's his bad trait straight from the books. Lestat and Claudia are more active. And I'm not excusing Lestat (he's crazy person with twisted logic who can't think of one sane solution), but that's the reason Lestat keeps probing Louis. First, with the song (which turns to be successful), then keep Antoinette alive (he wants Louis to say it himself that he wants Antoinette die instead of hiding behind Claudia, on top of needing an outlet as well like you said). They are really insane characters.
The chess scene is purely by the show writers tho. They're insane, because the game is real. It's a famous game. I forget the name. Sam and Bailey said they played it between takes

I’ve seen so many people not get what Louis is going through in this episode, just judging him for taking Lestat back, and you’re the first person I’ve seen talk about how hollow/passive he is after the fight in Ep 5. “Just grey” like YES. Louis the depressed vampire.

🦊that is such a beautiful scene, can’t wait for that reaction
Lestat seems to use any means to
provoke a passionate response from Louis
he fell in love with the guy who put a knife to his brother’s throat, and you can see how he lit up when Louis confronts him at Antoinette’s, that’s the Louis he wants

Lestat's turning really is some nightmare fuel shit and the thing is, the trauma shapes him moving forward in a way that can't really be fixed through means of therapy and such because he's been simmering in the residual paranoia and fear of abandonment for way too many years at this point. Obviously none of that excuses the shit he does, but in this show everything has a context to examine and all these characters have very complex deep-rooted psychological issues to consider, there's always a lot to discuss! I love hearing your insight, can't wait to hear your thoughts on the finale and then S2!

I love all the background details in this show. The chess game where Claudia beats Lestat is based on a famous game from the early 1930's called the Polish Immortal. A chess specialist was hired to teach it to Sam and Bailey and they practiced between set-ups. Also, the scene on the train with Lestat and the dog, Sam took dog training lessons so that the dog would do what he needed it to in one take.

I LOVED the dog being there. Such a nice touch and a spoiler free Easter egg for the book readers too. As you mentioned, if Louis would have said to Lestat, "hey, im never going to love you no matter what" ...well we don't know what would have been different because Louis won't say it! Even when hanging in the sky and Lestat is begging him to say it, he still won't say it. Which makes us feel like Louis, in some real way, doesn't want to leave Lestat.

part of what makes this show soo good is that thing you said, that with one single line your whole interpretation of a character can change. that process is the key of the whole series, they even tell you that when louis tells daniel not to rush ahead of the story, so i don't get how ppl jump the gun and tell you stuff that you're gonna find out later anyway lol

This show really does a number on the viewer with regard to making us invested in these characters, so that when they strap us into this episodic rollercoaster ride and have us suffer the peaks and troughs of their relationships, we're both mentally and emotionally wrung out by the time we reach the end credits! No sooner are we given cause to feel empathy or at least understand WHY they behave as they do, we're presented with a circumstance or exchange that challenges how we feel about them - and it's a heady formula to imbibe, but I'm here for it! I love how we all essentially become would-be therapists in our discussions, but I am an unrepentant sucker for all the outrageous, detestable, darkly hilarious moments that I know I should be ashamed of, but I'm not (Lestat and Hannibal Lecter being faves says a lot, I'm sure 😅)! Louis' mood bringing your energy down is completely understandable (and intended, as you said) - but I still loved your observations and comments! Chomping at the bit to see what you thought of the finale now! Great job! 🦊

Ahh! I love it every time you upload. You are funny and insightful, and really engage meaningfully with the material. Can’t wait to see your reaction to the finale, and, well, a LOT of stuff that happens in season 2. Not gonna say anything more, but season 2 is CRAZY good. I don’t want to get your expectations up too high, but I don’t think that that is possible with this show. Season one was running full octane, but then season 2 says “let me do you one better” and knocks it out of the park!
I just still can’t believe this show is real. Going from a 10/10 to an 11/10 with no signs of slowing down by the looks of the third season teaser. Even the trailers for this show are pieces of art in their own right! The Vampire Lestat (book 2) is my favorite, so I can’t wait to see what they do with it in S3. This show loves the book readers, but is also keeping them very much on their toes!
I’m forever grateful that this show is on AMC. It is gaining popularity but is still niche, and other networks or streaming services may not have let it have the chance to grow (though AMC could use a little help in the advertising department). Now only if we could have longer seasons and less of a wait in between… alas…
But in the meantime, at least there has been a new wave of reactors recently that’s been feeding my insanity! Thank you so much for taking the time to watch this show, share your opinions, and all the work it takes to get a reaction edited and posted. I’ve found so many new channels (and artists, authors, etc.) through this show’s fandom and it has truly been amazing.
Keep up the good work! 🦊

Yeah the guy who is playing Young Daniel did an amazing job at not quite mimicking Eric Bogosian exactly... But he absolutely did spend some time, a couple of days, shadowing Eric to kind of get the cadence of his voice down... The actor is actually British so he's putting on an American accent just like Jacob Anderson is. It's honestly pretty impressive! I had absolutely no clue that he was British. And that day when they were shooting at the bar both Jacob Anderson and Assad Zaman didn't know that Luke, young Daniels actor, was British because he kept up the American accent even when they weren't filming. which is a pretty common tactic that actors use when wanting to keep their accent consistent some people find it difficult jumping back and forth between their natural accent and the accent that they're putting on... At some point during filming the director came up to them and was like "Isn't it really cool how you're ALL from England"... And Jacob and Assad were really confused because they had no clue! But yeah this show really really utilizes British theater trained actors and it pays off... the acting is absolutely amazing... even Sam being Australian he did some schooling in England. I'm pretty sure Eric and Bailey are the only ones who aren't British theater trained actors in the main cast. (But the actress who gets recast to play Claudia in season 2 due to scheduling conflicts IS a British theater actress 🤣) so yeah, it's an American show on an American network but there is British theater training ALL OVER it.

Ohhhhhhhhhh, the way I totally relate to that part about even if Lestat killed Paul he'd still be your favorite character, because you love *the character*! Exactly! That's exactly it. Yes, he's terrible, has done horrible things, but I love the character, it's the kind of character I wish I could write, the kind of character I love to read. Not because I'm like him, but because his mind is interesting to me, way more than, let's say, a random character that gets portrayed as a saint. You can like a character and at the same time you can condemn their actions, and still enjoy reading or watching how those actions are portrayed, especially when you get an actor like Sam Reid to do that job. But then again, you also get Jacob Anderson, Bailey Bass, Eric Bogosian, and Assad Zaman and it's even better because it's not just ONE actor doing the job, it's the whole cast... And that's just a feast and we're so lucky we got this kind of quality on a show.
Now, this is just random, but I have to say I love Lestat's outfit in that scene with the car/when he tells his story. And also how you were done with Louis's passivity... And then by the end he goes: okay, we'll kill Lestat. Hahahahaha.

🦊 I really enjoy your takes on this, my favorite show! I feel like Claudia is the master manipulator in this episode, not Lestat. Ever since she walked back into the house last episode, she has done everything in her power to drive a wedge between Louis and Lestat. She’s got Louis ping-ponging between her and Lestat trying to keep the peace and Lestat flailing and making every wrong decision, clamping down on her in an attempt to keep Louis from going suicidal.
What they need is open communication between all three of them, but that has never been the dynamic in their family. If only the three of them would’ve made a plan for Claudia’s eventual independence and a companion of her own, maybe all this trauma could’ve been avoided.
There is no way Louis really wants to kill Lestat or even leave that townhome. He’s just trying to make Claudia happy. If he had wanted to leave with her, he could’ve done so anytime during the 6 years Lestat was out of the house.

Louis got a little bit of Paul in him and is ready to crash out at a moments notice it seems. 🦊 While Louis isn't my favorite character (I still love him tho) I definitely relate to him a lot as someone with depression. He constantly has a feeling of abject helplessness and a neverending sense of dread. There are moments where he's happy but his depressive episodes are frequent. Jacob Anderson plays it beautifully, you can just see how Louis' life has gone monochromatic. I agree with you that Louis is being his own worst villan, but that's a giant part of his depression, he's mostly self-defeating. He even recognizes that he probably should've gone with Claudia but he couldn't or wouldn't because he doesn't believe that he deserves to have nice things or deserves to get better. He'd rather self-flagellate than do anything to help his situation and that's EXACTLY what it's like to be depressed. You don't want to get out of the hole you're in because you've become convinced that you deserved it.

    • @foxtaco

I hear you..that's an interesting way of looking at depression thank you for sharing. I wish you all the best on your journey 🙏🏿
As a mental health counselor and a veteran who suffers from PTSD (non combat related) and chronic depressive disorder, I always find myself seeking answers or how to live with my current situation while avoiding becoming stagnant. I think that's where my frustration with Louis comes into play.( I want him to do it the way I do)
Depression from what I've studied and lived with comes in many forms and varying degrees. Even those who need medication myself Included, should be wary of letting our depression label us as helpless or unable to make steps to better ourselves.
Of course, there are cases I've dealt with, where patients needed a different approach, and maybe Louis would be someone who falls into that category. Some self reflection and need to be your best self never hurts either, though.
      (Hopefully, that doesn't sound insensitive)

I've definitely been frustrated with him myself, but I completely understand where he's coming from, and I really applaud the writers and Jacob Anderson for that because my empathy towards Louis is very unique towards the show. Louis' depression in the show feels real, Jacob Anderson plays him in a way where his stagnation is extremely frustrating and depressing but also completely understandable. Most of this is just to say that I love how the show deals with Louis' mental health struggles lmao

@@foxtacoyeah, a lot of people honestly feel that way about book Louis... Reading from Louis' perspective can be a lot to deal with... I definitely have heard of people needing to put the book down and get out of the funk that book Louis has put them into temporarily( Granted, you can say that about a LOT of different characters in this universe tbh)... Because yeah he's not a happy character the majority of the time... And so his perspective usually doesn't make people feel great when reading it.

There's a lot of issues in these vampire relationships which most of us have to stretch our imaginations to grasp. Besides the 'inhuman' parts like their super strength and durability which alters the concept of physicality with each other, but also a more 'human' issue of the difference in REALLY long relationships vs the standard human relationship. If you talk to people who have 20+ year relationships, different stuff comes up, different things become important... it's just different than the common human relationship which lasts a handful of years. Most of the time we never get to that point in our relationships.

Vampirism as a literary framework is so perfect for an abuse narrative. When youre in a relationship like that you feel like you CANT leave, ever. That theres nobody else in the world for you. And the aspect of them being vampires, set apart from humanity, as well as the traumatic bond and creator-relationship of maker/fledgling, captures this emotion so gracefully.

Like you said, you need this low point before the payoff. And Louis... Louis is melancholy incarnate, lol. That is one of if not his defining characteristic in the novels. Louis's true nature is peppered in throughout the series and will continue to become apparent as the seasons run on. Claudia is definitely a proxy for the audience (which is wild considering *her* nature, haha). Very excited for the finale and for you to start season 2 afterwards! It only gets better from here. 🦊

You and Frank are such perceptive reactors. Agreed that Lestat is one of *the* most manipulative characters ever written. Frank was getting tight about people gaslighting him into sympathy Lestat and I was like, nah, stand on your square! It's Jim Crow-era Louisiana. They exist within a world of mercurial restrictions. Vampirism should've been Claudia and Louis' ticket to an elevated existence, but Lestat's "love" is just another fucking shackle.
I think watchers would do well to remember that these characters are black. We can love Lestat and still call him a fucking colonizer. Louis is a consumate apologist. Claudia represents liberation and hope for the future. Seeing Louis so defeated in this episode is *painful* on a different level for black people who watch this show. It took me a few watches to recognize that's what that pain was: acknowledging that Louis is exhausted by racism, Lestat, the South and grieving his family. He's dead and he doesn't care.

    • @fizzychizzy
      @fizzychizzy 6 днів тому +4

BIG AGREE. Sometimes people want to divorce the fact that Louis and Claudia are Black in this version and it carries additional meaning and context. AND THAT IS OKAY. I am sure the writers are aware of this since they chose to hire a Black actor. It makes show way more complex in its commentary about the greater society as well as its commentary regarding intimate relationships between father and daughter, maker and progeny, husband and spouse. It is OKAY that these added layers exist. And, to be honest, it actually made the show a greater watching experience for me.

I respect your plea for no spoilers, and this isn't one. I just wanted to say that nothing was really spoiled for you in saying Lestat didn't kill Paul. IWTV was published in 1976 and people debate that *to this day*. Anne Rice even released a statement saying Lestat didn't do it and it's *still* a topic of discussion. Personally, I think he had something to do with it, but not intentionally. Paul was extremely religious and he believed Lestat was the Devil. Imagine the literal Devil came to town and nothing happened. Life continued on as usual and nobody cared: not the priests, not your family, not even God. What would that do to your faith, your reason for living? I think Paul was already teetering on the edge and he just reached a point where he had nothing left to hold onto anymore.

YIKES!! you ain't even finish the video but you ready to critique me right? No fox emoji nothing. So either you watching and not listening or watching and didn't get to the end to hear my thoughts. If you can't listen and let me finish my thoughts without passing your judgment, your comments aren't really a priority to me. We can discuss and have opposing opinions, but to do that. I would like to be heard and given time to elaborate. Stay blessed fam🙏🏿 have a great day

@foxtaco i mean he literally told Lestat he needs to take a hint an F***off. He has been pretty fair across the board throughout. Seeing as you only have one comment on his page, you're probably new and should go back and listen before proclaiming he's one-sided.
🦊 loved the last bit of you praising Louis and Lestat

@@foxtacothen call me a real one because that entire sequence floors me every time. The costumes are so incredible! The costume designer, Carol Cutshall, did several lengthy Instagram posts all about designing each of their Mardi Gras outfits. She posted those after season 2 though so I wouldn't swear that they are spoiler-free.
