And people still say maneuverability on an aircraft is not as important yea right..dodging 3 patriot missiles with a heavy yet maneuverable BOMBER is enough to justify maneuverability.
People saying manouvrability doesn't matter anymore are the same people swallowing up the same propaganda which tells such bs because our doctrine was focused in the last two to three decades on "stealth" and BVR. I'm sure that as soon as our doctrine will change (and it's alreadg changing because we have to keep up to Russia and China) our propaganda will tell us something different.
Sad reality of things is that we live in a little bubble of bs, because manouvrabilities always matter and what still matter is high speed; high speed matters maybe even more than "stealth" in some specific cases.
That's a very ignorant comment by a person who lacks any knowledge of aircraft in general. This is not a heavy bomber but a fighter bomber. Second thing the manouverability you think of, aka airshow manouverability has nothing to do with high speed missile evading which is limited mostly by pilot and machine G limits. In this scenario Su-34 is no different than any other su-27 family jet.
@@Sputniksim and a su34 is different than every other su 27 family jet, its slower, heavier and some reports indicate that the airframe can only pull 7 G's as opposed to the 9 of the su 35 for example. This is also reflected in the losses in Ukraine where missile have higher chances of hitting Su34 meanwhile Su35 evade more often. You made so many mistakes in 1 comment that I had to comment twice. Thats crazy.
@@Sputniksim The Su-34 is significantly heavier than the Su-27, with an armored body larger than that of the Su-25. It is designed to carry two crew members.
@@ScohillNo one says maneuverability isn’t important, but what isn’t important is super maneuverability. The days of pulling sustained g’s in a dogfight are long gone when you consider things like aim-9x exist and will continue to become more maneuverable. And the su-34 isn’t exactly an f-22. Besides that these missiles were at the peak of there range anyways, if the su-34 came close this would have ended differently probably.
Defending against 3 missiles with a fighter bomber is crazy😮,, Respect to the pilot and radar crew
If my understanding is correct during the Vietnam [conflict] A-6Bs were expected to wait for two SA missiles to be in the air before launching a shrike to take down the radar.

Just to clarify. Russian methodology of combat operations with this airplane is to use them only in pair. Since Syria they adopted this strategy. 1. SU-35 which is fully loaded for Air-to-Air combat is flying high up with its radar looking into BVR while the 2. SU-34 carrying the bombs is flying in front and below. The job of the 1. SU-35 is to cover the bomber and to provide him with more detailed information through the altitude advantage he has. Therefore he can also see the missles and tell them.

@@m_zbrv3967 SU-34 is a based of the SU-27 flanker , an aircraft known for its power and agility but the SU-34 is a jet bomber modification , it sacrificed a lot of maneuverability of the flanker for a strengthen airframe to carry more ordinance , remember this aircraft was intended to replace the SU-24, SU-25 and the russians intend for it to replace to their long range bombers to an extent in the future . It's not easy to dodge SAMs, let alone Patriot missiles in such a heavy aircraft , some russian telegrams also reported that this SU-34 did this with a lot of weapons (weight) still under its wings
Su-34 is very agile, most modern russian planes are.

If I understand correctly, a Patriot system locked on them, fired three missiles and they managed to evade them.
I guess this means the Su-34 is a stellar plane and these pilots are TopGun material.
Hmmm, given that between 25 and 35 SU-34's have been shot down during the conflict, I'd say your guess is a little off the mark.
The way i understand is the Su-34 job was to drop the glide bomb and follow instructions how to evade the patriots missile , with real time location of the missile flight path. The SU-35 job was to defend their wing bomber by takinge down 2 of 3 patriots missiles.
A drone operator missing in the chat likely warned Central command of Rus airforce of a missile launch of Patriots. Because there are videos of this when it happens , of a patriot battery firing 2 missiles. So it was a team work.. not just the work of Su-34

I mean in a fast and maneuverable jet like SU-35 or F-18 the chances of escaping might be bigger, but if you realize how heavy SU-34 is, you realize the smart design of Flanker in therm of maneuverability.. and it shows that even in age of electronic warfare and other high-tech anti-missile system the maneuverability of a jet and the skills of the pilot is still damn important
The 34 is still designed to fly fast and pull Gees, even though it is a large aircraft.
They hit the deck (less than 1000 ft), at max thrust and started pulling the missile left and right. They forced that missile to burn itself out pushing through dense air while pulling 180s.

The "maneuverability is not important" nonsense started with the F-35. Lockheed Martin were supposed to make a better plane but they couldn't. Pilots starting complaining the plane is a brick. The company replied "all that matters is the electronics". The DOD that is corrupt as hell, instead of demanding an improved plane just bought into the excuse and still moved ahead with the orders, now real combat in a real war has demonstrated that maneuverability is still very important to preserve the lives of the pilots and the aircraft itself.

The patriot shot down it own F-16 jet 😂😂
American here and I was pulling for the Russian. Absolutely!
They were at less than 1000 ft pulling hard Gs at max thrust.
You heard them pulling left and then switching back to pull right, making the Patriot, which has to pull lead on them, have to make a 180° turn to pull lead on them again. This is long after the Patriot expended all its fuel and no longer has thrust. Its pretty hard to pull a 180° and keep flying when you no longer have thrust. Sure, you can manage it with long slow turns but that's not an option for a SAM.
I thought they did a great job.👍
One patriot still hit in proximity. They got lucky more than anything.
The missile damaged comms and supposedly the pilot was hit in the arm.
@@barbdwyer22oh yeah, pure luck. No skill, no purposeful maneuvering. Just luck. 🙄
Yeah you might want to work on your math degrees skills. If anything turns 180 degrees it is completely reversing direction. That is NOT happening here. Yes the missile has to adjust course but it is no where even REMOTELY close to 180 degrees. The only time it is going to even be a big change is if the pilot keeps flying off angle in one direction. If he is just turning left and right over and over the degree change at range is small. Enough to cause extra drag on the missile though.

I was under the impression that they were largely not flying AWACS due to crew and airframe shortages, but this sounds like an AWACs controller, not sure how a ground controller could detect a launch at 80 clicks without a powerful airborne radar that could see that far; would also explain how they could see headings/speeds/distances/closure rates etc.
That's not what I heard. They pulled them further back after a couple were downed but they still fly them
Yeah, they're using their AWACS as bait for the Patriots.
They fly them just under 300 miles from the line of contact. If Kiev moved the Patriots up to the line they might get a shot at one but it could easily evade, from that distance and the Patriot would be guaranteed to be spotted and destroyed.
From what I understand they still have AWACS up, but while they previously were close enough to cover most of Ukraine, they are now only close enough to cover the frontlines.
They don't fly AWACS much because it's just *not* a Russian thing. Ground-controlled intercept has been their modus operandi since the Soviet times. The Patriot launch was detected by the pilot's wingman, not the ground controller though.

I spent my entire military career (a whopping 4 years lol) with the 1st 203rd ADA (PATRIOT) unit here in Athens, Alabama. I know nothing about flying jets but will only say that I have seen a PATRIOT launch up close and personal, and it is by far the fastest thing I have ever seen go across the horizon, and that was over 20 years ago. They never would tell me "officially" what the maximum speed was, but I did hear several brass mention >Mach 6. No idea if that is true - but it can 100% be across the horizon within seconds of coming out of the launcher. If the eye "had" him and he evaded, good on him. That system does not F around even at 30+ years old now.
Why guess? The first distance measurement was 80 km and in the original video it took another 1 minute and 50 seconds before the explosion was called. That gives an average speed of 700 m/s or mach 2.
Maybe the max speed is a little higher, but there's an acceleration phase and post-burn maneuvering would've slowed it.
