The "centaur from the feywild" explains the creature type bein different to other centaurs. It is a corrupting place after all. The proximity to feywild portals turned firbolgs from "gentle giants" into "primal fey-giantkin". So what would happen to a tribe of Centaurs living there for generations?

It's funny - you were talking about playing against type. When they announced the centaur race for 5e, I knew immediately that I wanted (at some point) to play a centaur rogue of the thief archetype; the image of this enormous horseperson with the Second Story Work trait has stayed with me ever since. :D
I fell in love with Centaurs with Chiron of Greek Myth and the Centaurs in Piers Anthony's Xanth series. Powerful Archers and intelligence and pride equal to most elf races. I'm looking forward to playing one as a race.
My Centaur Cleric also carries the party's mobile home, a wagon with a metric *fuckton* of supplies, he can also act as a floater in combat, zipping in and out of combat while carrying wounded people on his back. He is, the Ambulance Horse
The one time I played a centaur, she was a gloomstalker ranger archer, high mobility is so nice for staying out of melee range, and centaur with a bow is so iconic. And on more mechanic side, gloomstalker gives you the Darkvision your missing, and not just that, but also makes you invisible in darkness so you want to fight in the dark now.
I've been a fan of centaurs for a long, long time. Currently playing a centaur cleric of Kord of the Tempest domain! He fell behind the herd when injured, was healed and rescued by a human cleric living among dwarves, and found a community. He died protecting his home from gnoll raids and was transported to a demiplane to join a group of others brought after their deaths to finish the job of protecting the realm from some loosed powers running wild. It is a lot of fun so far!
I played one campaign back in 3.5 that was a warfare campaign. There were a LOT of open-battles we led and participated in. Typically 50-100 per side. My centaur was a fighter that my DM gave me some freedom to work with. He let me skip the Mounted Combat feat, ruling that it wouldn't apply but also wouldn't need to be a prerequisite for me. I grabbed Trample, Spirited Charge, and Ride-by-Attack by third level. By 7th, I had also picked up Ambidexterity and Two-Weapon Fighting, and since they are large, I dual-wielded greatswords. I also had each hoof equipped with fiery horseshoes that dealt 2d4 extra fire damage. As long as no one could stop me cold (Str of 35 by 10th level), I could kill 20ish low-level enemies in one charge. It was awesome! He didn't really fit any other campaign, though.
I've never played D&D, but I've always wanted to make a drider PC and centaurs are a similar kind of creature. I've fantasized how I could make a plausible backstory for a neutral good one. Maybe she was a powerful sorceress / wizard, but failed her trial to become one of Lolth's priestesses by refusing to kill her kind-hearted but weak brother and was cursed to wonder as a drider in the underdark until she helps out a group of adventurers. Perhaps she makes a silk rope to get them out of a pit or drops from the ceiling onto an enemy that was about to kill someone. She could polymorph herself to enter town without creating a panic or serve as a mount for smaller party members while in the wilderness. I picture her making silk scarves for everyone or patching clothing with her spinnerets. Basically, a very sweet person who was raised in a harsh culture and forced into a monstrous form, but never lost her empathy. Kind of sounds like an interesting backup character after my first character dies while in the underdark.
@@e.s.lavall9219 I'm impressed you found this comment! I'm going to repeat some other ideas I had on the subject from a thread in another video: I've got so many ideas on how to introduce the character. It'd need some help from the DM. She could be casually hanging upside down in a tunnel where her head is at eye level. The ranger or rogue of the party rounds a corner while scouting ahead and almost bumps into her face, yells in surprise (willpower roll not to yell in primal terror), and she screams back. The party runs up and the someone says (or DM through an NPC, if none of the players say it) "what's the problem?!" and she immediately points at the ranger and says "He surprised me! It was *terrifying* !" Then she starts crying into her hair because she's still upside down.
@@e.s.lavall9219 Sunlight sensitivity, size, and interactions with strangers would cause issues if she ever tried to adventure outside the Underdark. Could be homebrewed away, like you mentioned, but could be worked around. Sensitivity affects attacks and perception checks while in daylight, but not spells. Driders would need to be medium or large like they did with centaurs in the video. A bard might suit her better for roleplaying interactions: she'd still have access to the mend cantrip to repair things with silk, but also have illusion magic, performance and deception abilities to better convince others that she was a normal humanoid while disguised. I picture her asleep in the back of a covered wagon during the day with a mask, gloves, and large blanket over her abdomen & legs. She could pretend she's just riding in back with "the stuff." The drider form is a curse, so I guess it'd be up to the DM if polymorph or shapeshifting of any kind would work at all. She could also simply convince people she's not a threat through sheer charisma, but the appearance is a big hurdle to get over. One of the payoffs from saving a village could be that the wary townsfolk finally let their kids play with "the monster" with a silk soccer ball or something.
Literally started my rabbit trail because of a rewatch of the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe. Such a good movie! My DM gave me permission to use a Lance as if mounted, so one-handed, on a Centaur Barbarian. Now I need to decide if I want to lean into the fey theme, or maybe some inspiration from Berserk's Irvine the Apostle.
I’ve been playing as a human wizard whose soul was transferred into a centaur body and it’s been interesting. Ended up multiclassing into fighter to take advantage of the charge ability. I also took the fly spell because I thought it would be funny.
This is a great video on how to play Centaurs. I only played one. He was captured as a baby/colt and raised as a gladiator... so he wasn't very Centaur-like in personality. It was 2nd Ed using the Roman Empire handbook and Humanoids handbook. I know, boring compared to what you presented but I loved playing that gladiator that the party that I joined purchased (freed) as an adventuring companion. I was a shield-rush specialist who favored the cestus as the hand weapons.
One thing to think about is the possibility that the Playable version is actually a subrace of the version depicted in the Monster Manual. Explanation - real life horses/ponies come in all sizes, from like 2 feet at the withers (base of neck), on up to 6 feet (if not more). After all, there's many different breeds, ranging from small to large, usually for different purposes. It wouldn't be improbable for an "Urbanized" subrace to be a bit smaller than their more "Nomadic" cousins. After all, if you try taking a large draft horse inside say a house - they might go through the floor, while a smaller pony might be okay where the floor is concerned.
I played a centaur vengeance paladin. All i have to say is.... Hunter's mark then use your charge and use your pike to run through them then trample as you knocked them down is amazing. Big, heavy, battle tank.
One of the people in my party plays a Centaur. My character, who had only ever seen one other Centaur, always refers to them as a horse and had made it his mission to ride them. I actually accomplished that mission with a nat 20 on persuasion.
The centaur should absolutely have a companion of some sort. This companion will be in charge of managing the saddle bags and of course the daily grooming.
I personally ordered a miniature from Hero Forge and the quality is fantastic! They are always expanding their options as well so check back from time to time as well.
I’ve been working on a Divine Soul Sorcerer Centaur who was blessed by a unicorn to play on that smaller deer-like body size and to kind of try playing against type for centaurs
Well, horses are actually able to climb stairs, it's not always graceful, but seeing as though centaurs are half human, I would assume they have the ability to take into account of how they step, which in turn, isnt an actual problem for them.
A good homebrew for size issues I've heard of is the mechanics of classing a centaur PC as medium except for some situations is reference to their upper body being normal humanoid scale, while their equine portion is the size of a normal horse below the whithers.
I am guessing it is a little early for this, but eventually I would like to see your guys' take on playing a 5e Artificer. Love the other class and subclass videos you did. They really gave me a lot of great advice and new insight
I once had Centaur Ranger character went by the name of 'War-charge", he was the tank of the party and I won my first campaign. However during my second he met an untimely end at the hands of Demi-Litch.
The trick to talking about mtg colours is about the enemy colour contrasts. Green is life when contrasted with black as death. Its reality when contrasted with blue as illusion. And white and red contrast one another as order versus chaos. Red is also contrasted with blue as fire versus ice and white with black as day and night. Perhaps the overlapping contrasts are the most important. Selesnya becomes life and light (day), while gruul becomes fire and might (relaity). They contrasted with each other primarily along the order chaos spectrum.
Thanks so much for letting me know about heroforge! I'm but a poor nerd or I would get a dozen color printed minis, but its really helpful to customize and get a visual for my short story characters. Great video, centaurs are my favorite😊

I would love to play a centaur druid who was sent by an archfey type to keep tabs on a Warlock in the party who struck a pact with their master! The idea of being a Rimmer-like character always having his clipboard and eyebrow raised would be a lot of fun.
I'm super happy you mentioned Tempest Cleric as that's my top interest for a Centaur character. I'm totally going after the look of a video game character. Specifically the 1st Boss of Act Raiser. His personal theme song is Thunderstuck by ACDC. Now I just have to figure out the best way to get him Booming Blade.
One thing that bears mentioning: Certain kinds of equipment (most obviously boots) don't work with Centaurs unless you modify them, while they can (or at least should be able to) make use of the two or three different kinds of magical horseshoe. I feel it's always important to note whether any particular race has anatomy that might make someone do a double take and ask "Wait, what?" if they're described as using a particular item, though for now that list only has Centaurs, Minotaurs, Merfolk(?) and Naga on it if I remember correctly, and the latter two are in the Planeshift material.
We play one campaign where friend plays Centaur Horizon walker, she is from material plane and in first session we fell into fey wild, now she is young chieftain of Feywild Centaur tribe, and she is dispensing justice with greatsword and hooves all over Feywild!
I figure a centaur druid would be the best really, because they move faster, carry more stuff, have natural weapons like their hooves, and can carry off party members if they are sick or dying so they can get away from danger. Any other obstacle like swimming or climbing, which would normally be kind of a pain in the ass for a centaur, would be kind of nullified if you shapeshift into creatures that can swim and fly. So basically you'd have all the strength and speed benefits and the other problems are kind of swept away if you can shapeshift into the creature you want.
Just to clarify, Cavalier Fighter sitting on my centaurs back centaur casts Abjurations, constantly granting temp hp to both of us, especially with the new UA abjurations, granting me advantage in all saves, buffing that temp hp and allowing both myself and the Cavalier to impose some sort of penalty on the enemy for targeting either of us.
As a final note, lets talk about how much I'd love to, as a Centaurian Abjuration Wizard, have a Cavalier Fighter wielding a Lance on my back while I maintain Prismatic Wall as an arena around us and the big bad.
Imagine trying to climb something when you have hooves. Goats spring to mind. But so does the idea of a knotted rope. So the sub text of requiring hands and feet is it important thing for DM’s to consider.
I'm currently playing a centaur barbarian named Khulan in our current campaigns. Her backstory is that she's the daughter of her herd's chieftain whose homeland has been invaded by armanites from the Abyss, so she has been sent out into the world to find allies to help defeat the armanites while her herd keeps them at bay. Khulan's dump stat is charisma, with the in story reason being as first in line to lead her herd when her mother dies, she tries a bit too hard to be a inspirational leader to the party and live up to her mother's legend. Also, she's terrified of going underground (her homeland does consist of wide open plains, after all), but will begrudgingly go into dungeons and caves with the rest of her party for the greater good. She's also currently dating the party's wood elf ranger, and is a total shy dork about it. XD
She seems to be a fun character to RP. I'd like to hear some stories you have with her, some cool moments from the campaign, or even just how you feel when roleplaying her.

It is a corrupting place after all.
The proximity to feywild portals turned firbolgs from "gentle giants" into "primal fey-giantkin". So what would happen to a tribe of Centaurs living there for generations?
Dragons are centaur wyverns. So, centaur humanoids are human, but better.
Maybe.
my brain needed to reboot after reading this
I love the idea that another pc can ride on your back.
that's become my job in my school DND group. I'm a circle of the moon druid, I turn cast enhance ability ( strength)on myself the wizard casts enlarge, the gnome gets in a bag that I put in my mouth, and the rest get on my back .
Actually, see Shadiversity's "Best Weapon for a Centaur" - you'll get a chuckle at the end, (if reading the comments doesn't spoil it).
Wouldn't that only work if they were a small character (if you don't homebrew it)?
I once made a Centaur as a home brew race pre-ravnica who was a monk, named “Jah’an Centaur” he loved to grapple, loved poetry, and whenever he’d arrive he’d play the same tune on his pan flute
I had created a Centaur Paladin with the Oath of the Ancients. I felt like it just fit extremely well.
Centaur Monk, multi-classed with a single level dip into Rogue with the mobile feat and Horseshoes of Speed (which don't require attunement) is the fastest PC ever with 330 feet of movement available to them without touching their Ki points.
If you then cast Haste on them you can get them up to 75Mph.
2 level dip. Cunning action is a level 2 thing.
@@Oznerock oh shit, you're absolutely right.
@@zenclubber Yeah, made a rogue just the other day, so rules are fresh in my mind
i got a centaur vengeance paladin, and some how i got him a movement speed of 85 [base movement speed of 40 ft horse shoes of speed +30, mobile feat +10 and the vend rune on his armor +5] i effectively have a character with a run speed of roughly 40 mph
I will throw out Firenze from the Harry Potter books as inspiration for a divination wizard centaur.
Weird world... I just realized his name sounds like the Italian name for the city of Florence.
I must not have played Assassin's Creed 2 before reading Harry Potter.
Chiron from Greek mythology is a wizard teacher, also.
I think the name was Fiorenzo o3o
@@elisa48092 you could be right, though the name also may be different across the different editions/country specific versions of the book. I'll have to double check mine when I get the chance. :)
The UA Path of the Wild Soul Barbarian Centaur sounds kind of fun and Xanth-y to me.
One of my top player races and a reference to my favorite video game. I'm so glad I'm subbed to these dudes
Centaur Monk adding hoof damage to a Flurry of Blows
She sounds adorable and I love her! Someone made an "Arachsi" homebrew race that's basically a Drider, so you might want to hunt that down.
@@e.s.lavall9219 I'm impressed you found this comment! I'm going to repeat some other ideas I had on the subject from a thread in another video:
I've got so many ideas on how to introduce the character.
If you make the centaurs a large race replace equine build with “humanoid upper body: you count as one size smaller for grappling”
Life Domain Centaur. You guys are a riot. Truly busted out laughing at that one.
I like how their creature type is fey, meaning a lot of spells and other abilities won’t work on them.
The centaur should absolutely have a companion of some sort. This companion will be in charge of managing the saddle bags and of course the daily grooming.
Currently playing a "scholarly centaur with a back full of books" wizard, who's also able to "walk straight up a wall" using Spider Climb. Fun times!
So the thing that always get brought up when we discuss centaurs is, Stairs. And how are you going to go into buildings with the party?
Slowly and carefully with party members helping...currently playing a centaur and yeah, not crazy about stairs.
Stay tuned!
I mean I can see feywild warlock, getting their powers from a glaive enchanted by the summer court, multiclassed with a barbarian of coarse
I once had Centaur Ranger character went by the name of 'War-charge", he was the tank of the party and I won my first campaign. However during my second he met an untimely end at the hands of Demi-Litch.
I'm starting a new campaign tomorrow, and my character is a Paladin Centaur who took the Oath of Mercy. I'm very excited about this!
I don't know how I missed this, but thank you for making this video for me 😍😂
Thanks so much for letting me know about heroforge! I'm but a poor nerd or I would get a dozen color printed minis, but its really helpful to customize and get a visual for my short story characters. Great video, centaurs are my favorite😊
Centaur Warlock with mask of many faces. Have people walk into your invisible ass all day every day. Or have a friend ride you and float weirdly behind.
Is Disguise Self the one that stipulates the same number of limbs?
Derek Gooding I’d allow a centaur to use Disguise Self to look like any similar creature, such as a Paladin on a Warhorse or a Cleric on a donkey.
Looking at a Rune Fighter Centaur. Go big or go home, the size boost damage increase plays out well, and now any party member can ride with you.
Just started playing a Centaur Barbarian Gronk the Stomp, absolutely lovin' it.
5:20 Selesnya has centaur knights. Damn I want to play a game in Ravnica now.
Oh centaur Paladin!
I like the idea of a Dudebro Centaur Barbarian, straddling the line between savage unrestrained force of nature, and the most reliable guy in the party that you want to get advice from and share a pint with.
unearthed arcane Roving ability with Ranger... swim and climb speed equal to your land speed... problem of centaur climbing solved

Maybe a half-human half-mountain-goat?
Would that be more of a goat-centaur then? Since these are deemed a medium sized creature that could be another way to spin it.
I am really new to DnD, just played 2 OneShots and a Short Starting-Play to see, how I would react and what classes I maybe can play.
During that.. I acted twice not like the DM expected.
My first character is a HalfOrc-Bard bc I think this was funny.
Now I wanted to make an Centaur Warlock... And see, that I will lose a lot of good potential.
Arg, ... but I would like a "little" crazy Centaur with a faible for suborn funny chaos.
Very interessting video. Thank you!
Centaur for Disease Control is the dad joke of the decade: Change my mind.
The best part is having a party member use you as a mount
I absolutely love hero forge. I make all my PCs there. Great quality. Not a paid ad but they are that awesome. Thanks for the vids guys. Always amazing
Great vid, I love the idea of being a spear weilding centaur running around like a medievil jousting tournament skewering everyone.
Any plans to do one for Aarakocra/Minotaurs? I like the Idea of a magpie themed Aarakocra thief that uses flight to help steal things
I play a strength based Centaur Monk named Joh... It's the best thing ever at the table lol
"Centaur for Disease Control" completely broke me
I figure a centaur druid would be the best really, because they move faster, carry more stuff, have natural weapons like their hooves, and can carry off party members if they are sick or dying so they can get away from danger.
I still want to do a campaign with a cavalier where I play a Centaur Abjuration Wizard.
Nice video guys but my Forge Cleric minotaur depends equal monster ravnica race time for the best hoofed race! ;)
"I have my doubts about playing a centaur as a rogue"
I see that as a challenge, my friend ! One day, I'll play as a centaur rogue !
Centaur Tempest Cleric: Turn that lack of climbing into FREAKING FLYING.
You said Centaur Ranger and I immediately got this picture of a centaur Mongolian archer with a hawk animal companion.
I'm preparing for a campaign based on the Guildmaster's Guide to Ravnica and searched through your channel. Im suprised you havent any video about the other races loxodon, minotaur, simic hybrid, and vedalken.
Centaur Cleric, Nature Domain. Heavy armor, shield, a big beefy mace. Take the mobility feat too.
How about a Centaur Rogue Scout? Maybe relying less on stealth for sneak attack, but trying to gain advantage in other ways, or by riding other players into battle to get them close to enemies. I just love the idea of this high speed character being able to use Cunning Action.
Your videos are great, I'm totally new to D&D and they help so much!
I'd love to see a Minotaur guide from you guys at some point!
