- Oof what a crazy long day it is for Yugi and friends. First Weevil, then Mai, then we got Mako, followed by Mokuba, the Rex, and Mai. Finally when we think we can get some rest, evil Bakura makes his move.
This is actually a pretty epic duel. I really and as you'll hear me note 100 times. The card effects here are surprisingly accurate. - Розваги

That's probably because even Americans and American kids can grasp graveyards/cemeteries. Guns in context to Tristans monster being a soldier also makes sense cuz America.@@NitPik-p3r
The main reason why Bakura and Yugi's duel followed closer to real life rule was two fold.
1) because this duel was 'not for that chips, but for fun', they weren't playing by Duelist Kingdom's custom rules
2) This duel in particular is borderline filler to the anime, but is canon as it was added in as an homage to the Shadow RPG from Season 0/early on in the manga, where Yami Bakura pulled this same kind of stuff, but rather than a duel, it was him being the GM of a tabletop RPG, with Yugi and his friends having their souls put into their game pieces
Their favorite cards were also references to the classes they played too (Yugi was black mage. Tea was white mage. Tristan was gunner. Joey was swordsman. Bakura appeared as a priest/cleric)

Considering what was Dark Bakura's true endgame, maybe he was just fucking around and just wanted to see what Yugi and Atem were capable of. He did need them to revive Zorc.
I feel like Zorc didn't exist in the writers mind yet. I feel like if Bakura's full arc was realized they would've given him more appropriate lines of dialogue that match the backstory we get in the final season.
@@NitPik-p3rKazuki Takahashi did have Zorc in mind, as Zorc was established as a concept (by being used as the BBEG) during the Shadow RPG of Season 0/early manga chapters.
This particular Yugioh anime is also known as Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Monsters, or the "Second Series Anime" because of the fact that this anime focuses on the point of the manga where the Duel Monsters card game became the main focus.
Also, he really only needed the Millennium Items. He realized after his first defeat that he needed backup plans after backup plans.
I don't think he expected the puzzle to have the spirit of the Pharoah...or anyone in it
@NitPik-p3r That's probably true. Even if the manga came out 2 years after the events in the manga, it hadn't gotten past Battle City yet. Zorc was just a Monster World piece at the time.
To explain Yami Bakura;
Yami Bakura simply sees Bakura as a vessel, he onoy has enough regard for him to keep him alive, but will actively suppress his host when convenient

I think he kinda does in season 0, hence why he literary stabbed his hand towards the end of the monster world arc
@@NitPik-p3r to answer; Arrogance. Usually, (99/100 times) he can just keep Bakura bottled up and imprisoned.
So when he just puts Bakura's soul into Change of Heart, he takes for granted that he has things under control, so he's legitimately blindsided the one time it doesn't work. Had he not sealed Bakura into the card and just kept him buried in their shared body, he'd have won.

Yami Yugi really had it in for Joey this episode. "I could summon another monster and use that for Horn of Heaven. Nah, this prick used to bully Yugi, I'll just sacrifice him as he wishes"
I always wonder what would happen if a character pick a favorite as non humanoid Monster.
I like this episode. It turn a hole rpg saga from the manda in to only one episode with the card game and it have the same beats. (And thats why they chose those monsters as "favorites" those where they class for the rpg)
Also. Tea walked away from her card and was standing on dark magician card. thats why it seemed wrong whem she activated her effect, but it was actualy right
Its a stretch, but I feel this episode explains why Pegasus needed Kaiba's tech on top of the Millenium Items. The Items by themselves can summon monsters but they have weird sizes(just like in first manga duel against Kaiba). Kaiba's holograms I guess are accurate enough that they can serve as vessels for the spirits. Making them fully life-like.
To be fair, Yami Bakura was smart.
People tend to argue amongst themselves in tough, high-pressure situations. So, I'm betting deep down that is something he was banking on. If Yugi and Co weren't protagonists. So, that is why he was patient. 😂💯
Sure is good they all picked cards with people. Like, what if joey said his favorite card was time wizard, or red eyes? What would that look like?
God this was one of my fav season 1 episodes as a kid, i never thought about why but i loved this episode

at this point atem isn't the king of games and yami bakura is like a parasite to bakura. he tried to get rid of the evil spirit but he would also find his way back to bakura.

i always thoight they kind of walked around thr field, so Tea was standing on DMs card, that's why she had the "wrong" stats

This episode has accurate card effects because it's not in the manga, it was written for the anime specifically as a replacement for the Monster World mini-arc in which Bakura was introduced. The cards featured here had already been printed in Japan by the time the episode aired.
Also, in regards to the summon of Lady of Faith: Duelist Kingdom rules stated that if you ended your turn without having summoned a monster and with an empty field, you lose the duel; Bakura summoned her so he wouldn't automatically lose if Yugi stopped the Change of Heart play, kudos to the Gallop writers, they did they homework with this duel.

If Joey was taken by the Reaper, he would've gone to the Shadow Realm, and Yami would've ended up reviving an ordinary Flame Swordsman.

I like that everyone happened to pick humanoid monsters as their favorites. Imagine if someone picked a monster (such as Joey's Red Eyes), what would that look like? Would it be the Red Eyes' body with Joey's head or what?

Yami Bakura thought Ryo Bakura was basically obsolete.
This is one of my favorite duels because of the following.
1. It ties perfectly into the final Arc.
2. It perfectly reflects what happens in the previous Anime and Manga(they play a RPG with the core group of Miho, Joey, Yugi, Téa, and Tristan being put in as their chosen characters, as well as new classmate Joey).
3. It shows the difference between the two ancient Egyptian Spirits as soon as they meet.
4. The Evil Spirit of the Millennium Ring having the perfect deck as you mentioned and using it to perfection.
Honestly though, I wish that he had used some of these cards in his three Battle City Duels.
I meant Bakura when mentioning the new classmate. My bad. Didn't notice I typed Joey.
The only thing I want to point out about this duel, is when Yami Yugi has to sacrifice a monster to use the horn of heaven, he doesn't just summon something disposable from his hand and use that instead. He had a way around sacrificing anyone, and would've been in a safer position as he would've had reborn the monster again later in case Bakura had anything else up his sleeve. To me that is the biggest problem with this duel

Both Yami Bakura and Yami yugi are dead but had their respective souls trapped in their respective items.
It probably wasn’t planned yet but bakura is kinda double immortal because of his origins. The man had his soul destroyed at least 3 separate times and just won’t stay down

I believe in future episodes Yami Bakura is referred to as “The Evil Spirit of the Millium Ring” until it’s revealed at the very end that the spirit is really Zorc but no one is supposed to know that other then Zorc himself.

If Bakura just waited Atem to play Tea, he could win with Just Desert. Guess he has no patience or Atem plot armor. In battle city, we see that Yami Bakura can see Bakura struggling. I think he just ignores it most of the time except when it's life/death situation like the duel with Yugi.
@0:47 Dude, same! Yu-Gi-Oh! Eternal Duelist Soul. A lot of the early Yu-Gi-Oh! games would have you start with decks/opponents that played monsters with < 1,000 ATK points. So, White Magical Hat was a great get (at least until you fought someone and obtained La Jinn, Battle Steer and Neo The Magic Swordsman) 🤷🏻♂️.
As far as why he attacks with punches, I imagine it's because he's the spellcaster equivalent of an actual magician in the real world (he doesn't actually know real magic, it's just a gimmick).
Also, as a kid I felt like this duel was filler in Season 1, but seeing it again and having it get analyzed now that I'm older, it's crazy to me that Yami Bakura had Atem on the ropes the whole time and he did all the damage without monsters attacking. Yami Bakura should have won, but essentially lost cause it was 5 v. 1 and yet it was still close!

semi fun fact. this episode is filler to the anime (which is weird since the monsters effects are more correct) It is also loosely based on a few chapters from pre duelist kingdom where the group is sent into the dnd world where Yami bakura is the dungeon master also trying to defeat them.
Yami spared Tristan with Horn Of Heaven because he already went to the graveyard.

What really bugs me about bakura and the evil spirit is that in battle city its implied that he can talk in bakura's voice so its very unclear how often the bakura is in control of his body in this season

Did anyone pick up the fact that change of heart was used on his own monster
so this is actually the first filler episode …kinda. it's not skippable but this definitely wasn't in the manga. the closest thing to this episode is the dark world arc, which took place between death-t (which episode 1 is a heavily condensed version of) and duelist kingdom. to summarise, bakura is a new transfer student and when yugi and crew find out he's a fan of ttrpgs they try to arrange a game to get to know him better only for him to refuse, but then that night the spirit of the ring takes over and arranges a game anyway. the rest of the arc then has yugi, joey, tea and tristen play a dnd parody, during which it's revealed that yami bakura has been trapping the souls of everyone who ever played with bakura into the miniatures he plays with.
obviously with the duel monsters anime being about the card game they couldn't have them spend an episode playing dnd, a real shame since the arc has some great moments, the characters chosen classes better express themselves than their favourite cards, and yami yugi even manages to turn dice into a game of skill by believably manipulating his rolls.
however i don't get why this episode didn't happen way earlier. shoehorning it into duelist kingdom takes a lot away from bakura's character, especially since it means he isn't present for the first half of the arc like in the manga, but also takes away from yami bakura's return as he comes back in couple episodes rather than after a long build up.
btw, this is also why this duel follows the irl card game pretty closely, since it actually existed when by now. common misconception, while the manga did come first, the ocg does predate the anime by just a bit.
also, in the manga, the millennium puzzle does not have the ability to swap souls, that's the millennium rings power. letting yami yugi swap bakura and yami bakura is like letting him see the future or enter people's minds, or letting other characters create illusions. it breaks the rules of the story and devalues the millennium ring, and is just kinda insulting to yami bakura. like, that's his thing, don't steal his thing.

Had Yami chose not to make a move in his turn and taunted Bakura, would Bakura have cheated and triggered a penalty game?
You said it to open the video, this fight is different from the others. Isn't the only tabletop without holograms? If not it's pretty rare. So of course the monster effects are the closest to the real game, this is the closest the show ever got to a real game.
The horn of heaven needed a monster sacrifice, play a monster that doesn't have a soul in it -_-

you know something this is a very good episode. but for somebody so smart the spirit of the millennium ring "Yami Bakura" was pretty stupid here cuz he made a mistake that cost him the duel. Yami Bakura played his trap card too soon he should have waited. the trap card "just desserts" is a trap card that "inflicts" 500 hundred points of damage to your opponents life points for every monster they have on the field. Tea's soul was sealed in the magician of faith card so if Yami Bakura had "simply" waited a turn for Yami Yugi to play her and put her on the field giving him four monsters then he could have IMMEDIATLY activated his trap card dealing 2000 points of damage to Yami winning him the duel. the Idiot/Moron "activated" his trap card too soon fool shoulda waited.💯👍 not that i was rooting for the spirit of the millennium ring here in this duel or wanted him to win or anything cuz I "didn't" i was just pointing out the big mistake he made here that's all. a very good episode of Yugioh my favorite of the first season and season one.💯👍

I get where your coming from with Atem’s choice to sacrifice Joey instead of Tristan but they are dealing with supernatural forces that could cost them their lives and they care about each other so I can excuse 1 or 2 poor game choices
Sure, but their irrational decision making could’ve cost them ALL their lives. So while something might seem heroic in the moment. It could be the decision that kills your friends
