My Painting Process - How My Paintings Begin
Вставка
- Опубліковано 6 лип 2024
- In this video I show how my painting projects start from the very beginning. This involves taking a trip to the location that will be the subject of a future painting, taking reference photos and in most cases doing a plein air painting on location.
In this video I take you on a journey to a beach in northern New Zealand called Taupo Bay. It's a stunning spot and I most definitely want to paint a studio art work of this location. I spent the day there taking photos and doing a plein air painting which I demonstrate in this video.
I demonstrate the painting process of the coastal scene I painted en plein air at Taupo Bay. I also show you some of the gear and and materials I am using.
In the last part of the video I am back in the studio going through my photo reference and designing compositions in my sketch book. So far I have only got as far as doing a final sketch so there is still a colour study to do before I begin the final studio painting. Stay tuned as I will be making videos on this part of the painting process also.

Yay I love your paintings
Thanks Nathan 😀
Awesome video Samwise! Loved every minute. Great chance to familiarise with a favourite subject too! :)
Thanks mate 😊
@@SamuelEarpArtist waaaaa the man spoke to you. vou are really good sam.
Thank you for these wonderful tutorials. I appreciate you taking time to explain and not use time lapse which in my opinion is is impossible to learn anything from. I love your style and subject matter. The landscapes are beautiful.
You're very welcome, thank you for watching my videos 😊
Thank you for including so many specifics, like brush choices, color mixes, composition decisions, etc. This was a wealth of information in a pleasant, friendly format.
Thanks Heather 😀
I am so glad there are people like you on instagram! Thanks!
Thank you so much 😊
@@SamuelEarpArtist oh no! ops! Sorry I meant UA-cam! ahahahahahah
Great video Samuel!!
Thanks Jackie 😀
Your work and filming along with commentary always fire me up. You make painting accessible because you present your subject so well, everything is methodical & clear. Thanks a bunch. I've even done 1 of your painting demos ! I'd be interested to see more of mountains and ocean waves crashing on rocks. Cheers
Hey, that’s awesome, glad you are enjoying the videos. Yes I’ll definitely be making more videos on ocean waves and mountains 😊
@@SamuelEarpArtist Awesome ! Thanks 🤗
What awesome scenery. Love your work. It inspired me todo some sea scapes. Thanks.
Thanks Dianne, yeah you should definitely paint some seascapes 😊
Thank you Samuel for all of your advices in your videos. I do like the way you paint. Here in France I don't know a lot of landscape painters (I've never seen any videos or youtbe channel in french about landscape and seascape painting) and I see that in new zeland there is a passionate and inspiring "landscape painters team" (like A. Tischler, J. Crump and you). I guess that the wonderful landscapes of new zeland makes you want to pain. Thanks!
Thanks Frederick, yes New Zealand is a very inspiring place to paint and there are some really good artists who live here, especially Andrew Tischler, John Crump, Freeman White and Richard Robinson. I love it when we all get to meet up and paint 😀
Beautiful video thanks Sam xx
Thanks Debbie 😊
Thank you Sam. Very helpful!
Thanks Ann 😊
That NZ sky is a beautiful cool blue closer to cerulean than ultramarine ... such a beautiful place !!
Yeah it depends on the weather conditions and the location. The mountain skies seem to have more of an ultramarine blue colour to them 😀
@@SamuelEarpArtist Yes that seems like a valid observation. I've been painting Colorado USA scenes for the past few weeks and they tend to have warm blue mountain skies, nicely covered by ultramarine and white.
Thank you Samuel. Great information!
Thanks James 😀
Good video Sam. Best wishes for a successful 2020. Cheers
Thanks so much Jeff, same to you too 😀
Great video and thanks for sharing. Enjoyed it.
Thanks Lawren 😊
Great technique , wonderful!
Thank you so much! 😊
Thank you Samuel, it's going to be beautiful
Thanks Rose 😀
You and Andrew are very good teachers and I really appreciate both your painting styles. I love to learn from many artists that I admire....all have style and technique differences and this , in turn makes it easier to find one's own individual style while learning to appreciate a wide range of knowledge. I have grown and changed over and over in the last 50 yr or so and in the process have not lost my zest for creating. Thank you so very much. I wish I could look forward to visiting New Zealand....the landscapes are utterly stunning.
Thanks you so much. Andrew is one of the best artist's around, I am very lucky to have him as my friend. He also mentored me a few years ago and we ran a couple of plein air art tours in the south island of New Zealand in 2016 😊
It's one of the best art videos I have checked out!. Congratulations and blessings!
Thank you so much 😀
I wish I can visit New Zealand one day. ♥ Lovely work.
Thanks Laylla, yes you should definitely come and visit, New Zealand is amazing 😀
looks like fun ! hope to visit sooooon. Al
You should definitely visit New Zealand 😊
Bellissimo! Bravo!🌹
Thanks 😊
Excellent video Sam really helpful 👍 superb painting!
Thanks 😊
Your work is awesome.
Thanks Dianne 😊
Turned out really nice, Happy Painting in 2020 Sam 👍😊
Thanks Tez 😀
Great knack for describing all the why's-when's-what's, sequence, color, composition, and hints for all the phases of your paintings. Great talent!!
Thanks Alan 😊
Amazing work Samuel Earp, I’m looking forward to seeing your studio work as well.
Thank you.
Thanks Daniel 😀
Another great video! I get so much information and benefit from your "process" tutorials. Looking forward to the rest of the series!
Thanks Anne 😀
Thanks Sam for the video. This is really helpful and inspiring.
Thanks Ricky 😀
a great video, looking forward to the final painting, be happy to pay for this put together as one video to complement your 3 videos I have purchased, your videos are better than any art classes I been to and cost a lot of money. Thankyou again.
Thanks so much. I will be making a full length painting tutorial video on painting this coastal scene which will be available for sale from my website. Thanks again for your purchases, really glad you are enjoying the videos. 😀
Thank you for you're great teaching..

This is by far one of the best demonstrations I’ve ever seen. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, I love your style of plein air painting. I also appreciate all of the paint, canvas and brush details that you provide and the importance of composition and value tips.. What a gem!
Thanks so much Lizzie, I'm really happy you enjoyed the video 😀
Thanks for so many tips. Beautiful!
Thanks 😀
Wonderful 🎉

You are building a great resource here Sam, keep it up mate, look forward to the next part.👍

A great informative and well executed video, thank you, I learnt so much and appreciate the road trip to the beautiful beach where This Brit loved seeing the scenery of your magnificent country and look forward to more films
Thanks Jan, New Zealand is a beautiful country. I am a Brit as well
I own an Aspen forest in Canada. Aspen are beautiful with their smooth white bark but difficult to paint. Also, I would like to see how you would paint the inside of an Aspen forest where there is little sky showing but lots of dappled light. They are related to willow and have a lovely green foliage.
Hey Debby, aspens sounds like a great subject to paint. Do you have any photos you have taken of the inside of an aspen forest, I'd be keen to say, maybe I could paint it. My email address is: art@samuelearp.com 😊
Thanks - nice presentation and enjoy your painting style.
Many thanks! 🙂
You get a like before I even watch! I have watched most of your other videos dozens of times. I'll likely do the same with this one. Thank you for your excellent teaching! One request is to have a second camera on your palette too so we can see your mixing. I know that is a lot to ask ;)
Hey thanks for that. I try and keep my UA-cam videos relatively short and provide as much information as possible. I will be making more videos where I show some colour mixing on my palette as well. I do have full length in-depth painting tutorial videos for sale on my website where I show you everything including how to mix all the colours on my palette. My videos include closes ups and palette shots. I try and give away as much information for free as possible and I wish I could give everything away for free but sadly I have bills to pay. I'll always do my best to provide as much information on painting as possible and I'll always be providing free content on UA-cam and my painting blog. Feel free to ask me any questions. Thanks again for subscribing. 😀
Nice artwork)
Thanks Dan 🙂
Fantástico 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks Elena 😊
I just found you Samuel Earp, I enjoyed watching your painting process and how you explain as you go along. Beautiful beach there! Cheers. Will follow your journey.
Thanks Janice 😊
I make pencil sketches from a photo and use the sketch as the reference with occasional reference to the photo or even working from memory for colour.
A pencil sketch makes things much easier when you begin a painting 😊
You do an amazing job translating information and explaining your process. It's an awesome resource. One thing - when using cadmium yellow will you mention which specific one - cad yellow light, cad yellow medium, cad yellow lemon, etc since there is so much variety there. Thanks for all the great videos!
Thanks Ernice. With regards to cadmium yellow it is literally just cadmium yellow. You can be sure that I will always tell you the exact colour I am using. Here is the link to the cadmium yellow I was using.

Thank you Sam, for a very informative video. I am new at this and appreciate every free lesson I get get my brain to absorb. I would really like some pointers on how to keep the correct perspectives in landscapes/Seascapes. I find that this is a bit of a tricky part of composition. Your tips on paint mixes are also very welcome. Thanks again from Cape Town SA.
Thanks Suzette, glad you are finding the videos useful. I have some in-depth video on my website on painting landscapes and seascapes:

Greetings Samuel, love your work, envious of your local, and the scenery. I live in South East Florida, and often struggle with finding good "Seascape/Landscape compositions. It's FLAT here! I mean, there are no hills, rocks or mountains for hundreds of miles! I know there has to be a way to find exciting compositions, but could use a little help in looking for them. Any suggestions?
Thanks Michael. Yes I see your issues but just because it’s flat doesn’t mean to say you can’t find inspiration and create some great compositions and paintings. You could focus more on painting some of the elements in the landscape such as trees, rivers and streams, clouds. There are all sorts. Check out the plein air art works of Edgar Payne, Frank Serrano and Scott Christensen (both these guys are on Instagram). They may give you some ideas. Florida sounds like a great place to live especially with the warmer weather. 😊
Great video Sam. A question - how does the color study differ from the field painting? Is it just a more thought out and careful mixing of the colors or is there more to it than that? Looking forward to it. I made myself a pochade box and I too love going out to paint. Harder in WI here this time of year when it is only 20 out, my paint was freezing up on me last time. Also my box lid won't stay open with the hinges I used. Any ideas on hinges? Thamks
Thanks Bruce. You can use plein air paintings as colour studies for studio art works and I have done this myself in the past. I will paint a studio colour study so I have a solid painting to refer to when I come to paint the final art work. With regards to pochade box hinges the ones on my Ben Haggett pochade box are friction hinges (at least I think thats what they're called). Anyway it allows the easel to stay open and adjust to the position you want.
Check out this blog post interview I did with Ben Haggett of Alla Prima Pochade, he explains how he makes his pochade boxes.

@@SamuelEarpArtist thanks for your thoughts Sam...you're the best!
Thank you for this, very skillful 😍 If you get a chance could you explain how you "isolate" what you paint from the noise of the detail you see. I want to paint some of the photos I have taken but find it hard to see the "wood for the trees" if you get my meaning.
Thanks. Yes I can see the issue you are having. When you are painting a landscape especially outdoors it’s important to simplify the scene you are painting. Simplify the composition as well. When I look at the subject I am going to paint I pick the things I like from it and I always try to keep it simple. Less is often more when painting and very often too much detail is not necessary. I hope this helps. 😊
Have you ever thought of using a painter's umbrella to give yourself shadow to work by? I haven't and sometimes wonder if it might be worthwhile....I hate carrying too much .....paraphernalia......hee, hee.
Hi Johanne, I always have my painting in shadow when I paint outdoors anyway. The only time I have brought an umbrella is in case it rains. I like being in the sun when I paint outdoors as well 😊
Great video Sam ... what size would you do the final painting ... :)
Thanks Terry. I'm not sure yet, I'll have to see what linen stretchers I have lying around but probably 40cm x 50cm. I think this is a nice size 😀
Exactly the kind of video I've been waiting for. Question, you used only pthalo green, no sap. How do you mix sap-like dark greens?
Thanks. I have to confess I have never used sap green, I’ve always mixed my own. Having just googled sap green, it looks like you could make a similar colour with yellow oxide, ultramarine marine blue and maybe a little cadmium yellow. I use phthalo green as a way of increasing the saturation of an existing green I have mixed and it’s also a good colour to use for painting the sea. 😊
Burnt sienna mixed with viridian green plus little yellow can make sap green
Bing watching Sam Earp.
Just wondering... when you begin with the mid-dark tones first, what do you mean exactly?
Hi Louise, what I mean by this is that I start by painting all my shadows first as these are usually the darkest values. Shadows first then I paint the areas in light 😊
Is he from Missouri? or Missoula, Montana?
Hey Brett, no he is from Missoula, Montana. I must have got the names mixed up when I was talking to the camera and I actually didn’t realise until I already uploaded the video. It’s funny I made this error cause I have bought two pochade boxes from Ben and I he did a guest post interview on my painting blog! My bad! 🤦♂️😂
Correction: Ben Haggett lives in Missoula Montana not Missouri.
Hey Howard, yes you are right, I didn’t realise my mistake until after I had uploaded the video. For some reason I keep getting the names Missoula and Missouri mixed up! It’s funny cause I’ve bought two pochade boxes from Ben and he did a guest post interview on my painting blog! My bad 🤦♂️😂
