  • This video documents my first impressions of the Nikkor 400mm f/2.8 TC VR S - super-telephoto lens with built-in TC 1.4 Z teleconverter, following the #Z9ExpereinceDay at the Lee Valley Park Velodrome - aka the 2012 Olympic Velodrome.
    Key discussion points in the video:
    00:00 - Introduction and overview
    01:00 - Discussion on price-point
    01:25 - Brief comparison to the Nikon 400mm F/2.8 F mount
    02:00 - Overview of lens technologies and overall performance
    02:50 - Examples of using the teleconverter during shooting
    03:30 - Speed of use and control overview
    04:00 - Tripod foot
    04:34 - Sample images
    05:00 - Compatibility with other Z teleconverters
    05:30 - Additional sample photos
    06:15 - Lack of VR switch
    07:15 - Conclusion
    07:55 - Additional discussion on build quality
    I do not profess this to be a full review, and yes many of you will say one day is not enough to suss out all the negatives and positives but I think it does give you a realistic view of general performance.
    In this video I discuss how the lens handles, autofocus performance, the implementation of the 1.4X teleconverter and initial thoughts on the optics of this amazing lens!

      Absolutely! I’ve started to see people get their hands on them (not sure if they were ambassadors though). I definitely want to rent one for some wildlife pics in the not too distant future

      Agree great short-use review, honest! Just so you know, what Nikon knows...the switches on the side, like VR switches....are weak/failure points. So Nikon made the switches better or more durable, but they still took as many switches away as they could, to help reduce repairs and failures. I have had two VR/AF switches fail or completely fall off, the one time after the switch fell off my 24-70 f/2.8E VR and you could see through the little black hole it left behind...but at first you could just see the snapped little plastic part and the coil/electronics for the switch. The next time I looked, there was just a hole though and I guess that part fell into lens? I don't know, but Nikon (NPS) in Los Angeles said they see that quite often and you need to be careful with the switches on the side of your lenses. I was surprised by that statement, so I even asked them...what about the switches like on my 300mm f/2.8G VRII or 500mm f/4E VR FL? They sorta laughed and said that they were definitely more durable or well built on the big super-tele lenses, but to still be careful. NPS said they rarely failed on the big primes and zooms, but I wonder if this issue had anything to do with the decision to get rid of as many switches as possible? I typically leave my lenses set to VR Normal, but sometimes I do like Sport mode on my 70-200mm f/2.8E VR FL and 500mm FL lenses. I would probably miss the VR switch as well, but I could understand if they really are just another part to fail.

      Can’t agree more, if Nikon has got one thing right, it’s glass. But then again for this much money, it better be!

    Hi, I hope you can help me, I have just received my z 400 2.8 TC, and notice that when i move the lens vertically upwards then downwards I notice something, I pressume VR, moves up and down with a dampening movement. When i switch the camera on it blocks and it does not do it anymore..... Is this movement normal when the camera is not connected?

    • @HamerReviews
      @HamerReviews  7 місяців тому

      That’s normal. I didn’t have time to test it with that lens but it’s the same with other VR Z lenses I’ve used. Nothing to worry about

      If it’s an f4 then it’s going to be around £5000 I would estimate. Still not what you might call budget 😂

      True, though it’s amazing how affordable everyone makes the 800mm sound until you realise it’s still £6,300

    Shoulder strap would be advised before handling $20K worth of gear and tossing it around like that.

      Haha, where’s the fun in that? I don’t tend to use straps much to be honest. But I know it’s something others do value.

    Been waiting for 70-400/2.8 TC VR but they outputted dated fixed, overpriced & dead weights 400- when subject is close to you will be useless.

    • @HamerReviews
      @HamerReviews  2 роки тому +1

      Think you'll be waiting a long time for a 70-400 2.8.... a Z mount version of the 180-400 F4 maybe more so.
