I don’t see what’s so great about that. I get the micro advantage, but just leaving them back there. It seems like the only advantage really is that zerg has to continue guarding them and can’t really leave? Is that the main idea or is it something else ?
@@HappyChillmore The general idea is that if you get Zealots behind the mineral patches, Zerg basically has 3 ways to respond. 1) Inefficiently trade Zerglings to kill the Zealots - the downside to Zerg for this action is that they then have to spend extra Larva to get those Zerglings back or be vulnerable to a follow up push because they don’t have enough units to defend. This slows down their economy immensely because now they might not have the larva to Drone Up properly and it can throw off their early to mid game - plus, if they had been planning to do some kind of early game aggression, they now need to crank that production up and go All In or they may not have enough units left to actually take a fight across the map and win. 2) Make a Sunken Colony and use the range to force the Zealots to come out from behind the minerals and take a fight, but again, depending on control, you could still lose drones or Zerglings, plus you now had to lose a Drone out of your economy and spend 125 minerals on the Creep Colony then upgrade to Sunken. That’s the Minerals equivalent to 10 Zerglings that now can’t be used offensively or defensively, or 2.5 drones mining (3.5 once you account for the one lost to make the Sunken). It’s a pretty big economy commitment. 3) Leave Zerglings there to make sure the Zealots can’t run out and snipe drones until you have Hydralisks or Mutas to force them into a fight, but this means the Zerg player now has to keep a close eye on that spot of the minimap so that they can respond in time if the Zealots run out early meaning they miss out on other scouting opportunities or not respond fast enough to an attack somewhere else, and even that doesn’t happen if they don’t control during the fight properly they could still end up losing drones or units. Now, the benefit for the Protoss player is that with option 2 and 3 the Zealots are giving the Protoss player a *huge* amount of scouting data. Zealots can actually see decently far, so the player can hop their screen down to see what’s coming out of eggs so they’ll know if the Zerg player is going Drone Heavy and the Protoss player may be able to push, or if they seen a lot of Zerglings come out they’ll have time to shore up defences. If they see a Sunken being made they know that they can either get a bit greedy and go for an extra base fairly safely because the Zerg won’t have the units to really push, or even make a push themselves to hit another base because the Zerg may not have enough early game units to properly defend. If they can see Mutalisks or Hydralisks hatch and more importantly the timing of those units, they now have enough information to be able to tell if the Zerg Player is just going for a normal Macro power up or if they are going to become aggressive and go for an all in or contain, and in either case that extra scouting gives the Protoss Player extra time to prepare appropriately. And the kicker is that it really doesn’t cost the Protoss player anything outside the norm to do - if you try to retreat back to your base with the Zealots they’ll just get surrounded by the faster Zerglings and picked off by superior numbers, and the Protoss player probably wants to open up the Supply Cost to start mixing in Dragoons... So if you want them to die, and they are definitely going to die, you might as well make it as uncomfortable as possible for your opponent and get as much value as possible.
