This is a very simplistic view and although absolutely correct valuation is often more complex depending upon the sector. Another variable of course is the multiple you use and who determines it. At the end of the day the valuation of the business is whatever the potential buyer will want to pay.

Good advice. Business owners should take the steps to calculate the value of their business even if using the multiple method. Especially in the event someone approaches them and expresses interest in purchasing the business. Most business owners don't know the approximate value of their business and wait until a potential buyer approaches them and begins the negotiation process. The true value is the amount an informed and willing buyer will pay. Most sellers don't have enough buyers in place and that is the biggest reason businesses don't sell for maximum value.
There are strategies which will allow you to sell your business quickly by creating a competitive environment forcing buyers to compete against each other and driving up the sale price for your business.

I would say that the multiple has first and foremost to do with the stability of the $10 (essence of the capital Asset pricing model).
If i own a mcdonalds but don't own the land, how do i calculate, versus if i own a mcdonalds and also own the lands it is on?
Nice tips. For the part multiple (3 to 6) * profit, I would applied 3 or something close to it. Buying/starting small business is risky, so P/E ratio should worth the risk (Very low liquidity, U almost cannot sell it).
I knew this was an example from the first time I saw the video but honestly telling how the values is very important even in an example. Say I was giving an example on how to make a pie based on my own recipe and I told you all the in ingredients but left out how to prepare them and the amount. How is anyone to know how to make the pie based on my recipe? This is the same thing without the proper information and the necessary details you can't expect anyone to be able to calculate anything based on the information given.
Being this video as it is. This is not an example on how to calculate anything but rather an example how to confuse you total target audience.

That is what I was thinking. So it should be 3 * 30 = 90, which makes the good will of the company 80 not 20. (If I understood this completely)

The thing about this video is that you are just throwing out numbers without giving an explanation of how you came up with those numbers. We the viewers see how to calculate the numbers thrown up in your video but we don't understand why those values are?
I can be like the Pie Guy I saw on the first season of the TV series "Shark Tank" and have one major product that sold for $5 per pie at the rate of 300 pies in the last month. My cooking expenses (Gas Bill) was $45 because I found an efficient way of placing the pies in a standard home operated stove. I am the worker and I get 20% of my sales and sales tax is 8% here in Temecula. How do I turn these numbers and calculate the given information into the business value?
The other thing a lot of people are having trouble with are online services where there is no product being sold only a service? Many of witch have already put a price onto the services and have an estimated sales amount however because there are different factors as apposed to the traditional business of product sales. With services there are no manufacturing costs but there can be multiple of different other fees that have to be included. Digital storage as video, images and audio all take up hard drive or server space. lots of online businesses require Bandwith Capabilities that are also provided by external companies. how do we calculate all the fees included in a online business in order to estimate the businesses worth?

He simply use P/E ratio to evaluate business worth. It's like buying micro cap stock. And I actually love this idea.
Dante, just because you can make pies at home doesn't mean that it only costs you the price of gas and ingredients. You're using an asset (stove) without which you can't make pies, so you would have to account for that. The person who would buy your business would need a stove. The stove is a necessary part of your business' income stream. The cost of using and maintaining the stove is included in your profit number and the buyer will not be paying you for the portion of profits assigned to the stove, unless you include your stove in the sale.
Service businesses are valued almost the same way. If you have been running a service business for several years, you can look at historical costs and average them out over the sales you made. If this data isn’t available, you might be able to get these numbers from a consulting firm or a business broker specializing in that industry.

other than posting up how you calculated the value of your business just because. How is this helping out anyone. It's almost like you made this to be a self note rather than to help anyone out. You threw out numbers that only you would know the significance of and no one else.
