Finding safe people is not easy. For me, the first step was becoming a safe person to myself. When I stopped abandoning myself and being hypercritical and judgmental of myself, I was no longer attracted to, or attracting, those who were abandoners and hypercritical and judgmental of me. Twelve Step programs are a godsend to me.
This teaching is so so helpful. I was able to locate myself and my deficit. I have no problem opening up to another believer, but rarely have I gotten the encouragement that my heart longed for. So, I think it's my people picker that has been broken. Perhaps I never learned this essential skill. We were made for healthy connection and when we don't get the right kind of support, we do experience a deficit that affects other important areas of our lives. Did not know there was a connection to being able to perform, move forward with goals, our talents, gifts, God-given abilities, and life's decisions, etc. Not until I listened to this a few times did I get understanding...wow. I have taken this topic as a class and it was extremely helpful to me. I hope to take it again. Taking theses classes once a year, SAFE People AND BOUNDARIES is probably best for me! I want to keep learning and believing there are good, SAFE people out there to connect with and do life with. No one is perfect. Certainly I am not. But safe, supportive relationships, [people who are for you], are essential for every human being. AND DISCERNING a person's character is critical to navigate through life to avoid unsafe people too ~ A BIG THANKS to you, Drs Cloud & Townsend!! 💞
I'm running out of safe people. I'm experiencing people withdrawing from me when I try to share my vulnerable feelings. I don't know where to go to find safe people any more. They are not in church. In fact, it feels like God has left the church as well.
