It was really fun seeing you run on national TV again. My analysis: you were less than four seconds behind the reigning NCAA 5K champion (Tuohy) who set national records in high school; 23 seconds behind Schweizer who ran in two distance events in the Olympics and whose PR is 14:26; 3 seconds AHEAD of Purrier-St. Pierre who was 11th in Doha. The heat made the times irrelevant but by comparison with the others I think you did well. Think where you will be next year at this time when it will be only one year until the Olympics.
Hey Allie, you probably remember me, I'm the one who ran up to you yelling "HIII I am a long time UA-cam fan!" at Hayward. You looked worried, I hope I didn't scare ya! Hahaha. I was so excited to meet you!
I watched this race. It was really a "Who's Who" for the 5K. You had a Great race and do not be so hard on yourself. This was an all star event. Look who you ran side by side with most of the race and she is one of the best too. Heat and Humidity has always been a game changer on race day. Sometimes it works for you, sometimes it gets to you. You did great and your comeback is on track.
I’ve been dying for this video ever since I found out you were competing! Way to go Allie! I think it takes a lot of courage to put yourself back out there and enter such a big race you weren’t really planning for. That seemed like a really awesome experience! It sucks you are disappointed but I thought you did awesome 🥰
I know you’re disappointed in how you did but it was so cool watching you race, and it was a great learning experience. Just keep growing and improving, and I know next year will be BIG! ❤️❤️
Man what an awesome video! You absolutely nailed the thought processes that I’m sure tons of people have thought after a big race. You are a great creator and I’m so happy to watch your journey.
Allie, I've been watching you and Spencer for a while now getting training pointers for my son. Please let me say this. You are an awesome runner. Your training is top notch. With this being said, Stop being so scared or so nervous before a race to the point it hampers your performance. You are ready!! Also, when you are racing, stop worrying about other racer's strategy. Don't allow the other runners to force their strategy on you. Run your race at your pace. If they pass you at the end, so be it. Leave it all on the table. Make them earn it. Make them beat your best. Good luck. Thanks for all the videos.
Thanks for the video and voiceover Allie. Fascinating to hear your thoughts. I like the tinkle of optimism shining through the disappointment at the end there. Can't wait to see you put yourself out there and take those risks you were talking about. Ask yourself what's the worst thing that could happen? You burn up but learn a lot more than you would from hanging back :)
A lot to be excited about -- 16th at USAs (a race you weren't even peaking for) & beating some athletes with SBs under 15:20/15:15/15:10! Keep it rolling!
Allie, you are so right that it's the support that means so much. You have great people that love you and that counts more than anything. You also did great by the way, and you should not beat yourself up for anything. You're among the best in the world for god's sake and that's incredible!
You're back in the game...which is a step in the right direction. Soon you it will be time to risk failure...but you will know when that time comes. Trust your experience...
So cool watching you back out there at USAs!! This is JUST the beginning for you!! Keep working hard, learning, and staying patient and the big things will come for you!
Thanks for the breakdown Allie. I agree that you have a lot to feel positive about right now. Have fun finishing your season strong and executing the plan!
For your fans it is great to see you out there racing and competing at all this season. Congrats on how far you have come. And your thoughts on this race seem 100% solid to me. You wish you had reacted better at a certain point but you learned something and you move on. And I bet George was happy to see you come back home no matter what happened on the track.
Even getting invited to compete at nationals is a big honor. Definitely a tactical race. You finished just behind NC State phenom Kaetlyn Touhy, who also got stuck at the back of the pack in this weird race (not something she's used to at all). But, you hung in there and finished strong and should be proud of yourself for competing at such a high level when you're clearly still buidling back up and weren't fully prepared for racing at that level. Glad you counted it as a positive, learning experience instead of getting down on yourself. Go, go, Allie O!
Taper runs hit different. It's like my body is screaming for a run from the lower volume but I'm also peaking so no struggle, it just feels amazing afterwards. I wish all runs could feel like that.
I'm glad you got to run that 5K. Things are looking up for you. (I would have never been able to run that slow pace. I would have had to run the pace I was trained at whether it was 70, 75, etc.). The speeding up at the end of the race was supernatural for a certain few...
it's so odd to hear doubt coming from such an amazing runner. I just assumed it was just something that I as a runner who just runs Skinny Raven races, feels! Congratulations for your skills!!
Wow what a trip of a race and you were competing against some women who recently broke 5k records and the Bowerman team specifically trains for the 5k, so you did amazing considering your journey and the super stacked field.
I know that you are disappointed for not having the best race, but the fact that you raced there and gave it your all you're a winner to me! I thought that you did amazing even though you got stuck in the back you were ranked 24th and you got 16th that's pretty good even if you feel like you are not in your peak fitness! Still so happy for you and there will be plenty more races you did amazing!!!!
It’s kinda weird but being a follower of your channel for a while now I could pick you out from a distance in the pack by your gait 😃 well done even getting into the race and tactical ones are so tough. You looked like you were finishing like a train and as you say if you were in a better position things could have been different Well done again
I heard lots of people complaining about the slow pace people just don't understand when it 84 degrees out there no one is going to push the pace and go for a big time its going to be sit and kick and see who can match it. Great job especially considering this was not built into your schedule.
I love hearing your race recap you’re awesome! You are going to do so well In the future. I know you’ve been labeled as a “steepler” but I can tell you’re much more than that. Keep up the great work and have fun! I enjoyed your video a lot
I thought you did well in this race. It was a loaded field. One day at a time on the confidence building! In the end glad you were able to enjoy the weekend!
Awesome effort! Race results and moves are something you simply can't control. All you can do is your best. Sometimes it helps to think back where you were 6 or 12 months ago and see how you've progressed. At least that helps me as a recreational runner trying to find time for running when work and family fill the days 🤣

Yes Allie, I believe in you and you have my support as far as a fan. I know this race was a little bit disappointing for you, but I'm sure you will keep at it and big things will come. I'm sure of it.
Getting caught out on big moves in the middle of races is something that happens to us all at one time or another, Allie. It's just a learning experience, so chalk it up as just that. Move on and KEEP GOING!!!
1:57 not sure if Spencer was legit recognizing the disc, but Nate Sexton Firebirds are pretty valuable, in disc golf terms. There's usually a rush to buy the first runs every year. Also, it's very likely the disc's owner was out there in the field somewhere practicing his throws, and this one went wayward.
Wonderful voice over and recap. Nick Symmonds would have told you to change your position for the tactical race. Otherwise if you’re stuck in the back when the big move is made, just recall in your mind how Dave wottle won his 800m gold, going from last to first by keeping his head down and just moving up. Anyway, I’m sure you know all that. It was great to see you racing at the elite level again :)
Golden rule of slow races... make sure you're somewhere near the front... You can see and react to any move immediately... But hey ho- life's full of experiences- good and bad- you'll be better for it... I'm just happy to see you out there racing again... and look at the progress you've made in a short space of time... Everything's good... :)
Know you're disappointed about the outcome because you felt you could have done better tactically. Even so, track races (and any races) always have that element. Even the fittest, fastest folks can make mistakes in a race, and that's why racing is so fun to run and to watch! Nevertheless, seems you did pretty awesome for a last-minute race against top-flight competition you were not planning to be in. Congrats! Really ticked I couldn't catch the Women's 5K on the telly-it was not aired for some reason as far as I can tell. Keep being awesome!
Allie, thanks for the great recap on the race, this type of race is really tough with all the gear changes. That Green Lake is a really nice place to train, I ran there a few times, I also liked Seward Park area fr a training run as well. Best regards.
Ok, so this is what I've learned in my 10 + years running:- what goes up must come down. Winners ultimately will be replaced by others. Loosers ultimately will be replaced by others. Rock on.
Hi Allie! Love the analysis of your race and super stoked you put yourself out there when you were not at all close to being ready for the championships!! This was, as you mentioned, great experience for you moving forward and you’ll be able to use this in the future for sure. I understand that you are disappointed by how you raced and if I may may suggest that you give yourself even more credit and try to be less disappointed in the final product of your race. From what I gather (from watching your videos) you had the 5 km race on the roads planned and then last minute went to Portland, tan 15:24 or 15:26 in terrible weather and then last minute jumped into nationals which turned out to be super slow with a massive increase in pace after a fartlek style first 3k. Looking at your splits you went 3:03 and 2:58 for your last 2k when you did not even practice that shift of gears and truly are just putting in consistent (but nothing really geared towards a racing season)! If you could try to let go of the disappointment, see the totality of your race experience and understand that what you accomplished in such a short time you’d find that it’s so much more impressive than what you are suggesting it was. You’re amazing, super talented, and with a full prep things would be very very different! Allie O you are a gift to the track world and I look forward to what’s to come . . . have fun, enjoy the heck out of your running as well as your friends and family!
Can't imagine how mind bending it must be to go into a race like this with next to no advance warning, then deal with the warring sides of your brain saying "Race to win!" vs "I'm not ready to race like this right now" AND the pace madly fluctuating like that.
BTW, you're awesome, even not peaked you outperformed your ranking! Can't wait to see what you peak for this summer! I'm assuming off the track since you've had some great road races. Whatever it decide, you rock.
some day some intelligent young female runner is going to realize that in these championship 5k races.. a lot of the field is doubling and tripling 10k .. 1500m ... so they want to go out really slow in the last day 5k .. the opportunity is there for someone to put an early lap on the field.. someday someone is going to attempt it.
The 10k championship was held weeks earlier at the Prefontaine Classic. A few runners did double the 1500, but the vast majority of the top 5k finishers did not.
This is just another valuable season experience to go with your excellent pacing in NYC, Freihofer's win, etc.. You finished with really good women who are more attuned to the track right now. I suppose that you might have heard that NCAA wsteeple runner-up Kayley Delay of Yale is doing her 5th year at UW next year. Might be someone to reach out to for '23 in terms of training, etc.. She had a really gutsy running effort for a big PR.
Love your analysis and enjoyed watching you race very much. And against the best runners in the US, in a championship race, without a proper buildup in brutal heat. I say, well done. One thing I'm wondering about is that you ran seven miles at a decent clip the day before the race. I believe you said on one of your videos that this is something you always do. When I was running (years ago) I was forced to miss three days of training due to a job commitment. At the last minute I entered a 10k road race that weekend. I was worried that I had lost fitness, but instead, I felt fantastic and ran by far my best PR. I was just wondering.... you can guess the rest of this.
@@allie_ostrander exactly what I thought : but being a sprinter to 800m runner running a 5k's I would take the day before off or an easy 2-4 miles . But l have alot of speed compared to Endurance : but you did need more racing to get into racing shape . You obviously will improve in the next few years so I wouldn't worry about it : a good baseline to get under 15.
Even though I'm still in highschool, I struggle with a lot of the same things during races. I always second guess myself, and as the paces hit during workouts that predict my race times predict really good things, but as soon as I get to the races I get so nervous. Although I really so love a tactical race, I'm a good sit and kicker, at the start of the bell lap I start opening up my stride and then with 200m to go I completely sprint and give it all that I've got - I can make up a lot of time and usually make a pretty big gap between myself and the person behind me.
I was looking forward to this video more than most because I remember standing there watching on TV (I waited for the tape delay) and it was so confusing! Not even Kara Goucher could figure out what was up with that pace lol. I was just hoping you'd be smart enough to not take too much from that race due to how much of a bizarre outlier it was, and it looks like I was right! Just have to keep on keeping on, I guess.
I would love to see how you would do on a road 5K versus the same people. I'd be willing to take the bet that you'd finish a lot higher. Either way lots to be proud of
while watching this race i was thinking, its best to get to the front by the 3k mark bc it will pick up from there -- important to recognize or anticipate when moves might be made
so tactically, if u feel like you dont have the gear shift, then making sure you hit the front before the move happens thrn you dont have to gear up so intensely
There are minimum speed requirements on highways, there should be something like that in races. Like anyone slower than x seconds per lap (depending on distance) is automatically disqualified 😅 I’m just surprised to see how much group mindset there is in a race, not so much individual tactics
Don't know how I missed this but then again....guess I didn't. Maybe there will be a 4 legged Pacer in the future. It looked like fun with the last lap and finish, something to build upon.
That was a strange race, I kind of figured it would tactical race but now that slow, lol. You did well for saying it was only your second 5k of the season. But, that tactical racing is not going to work against those Ethiopian and Kenyan girls at worlds.
Heat did not help that befuddling pace the first few ks. Main thing is you partook in the action and can make necessary adjustments...you have time & talent on your side😉
Thanks for the no BS recap. Fitness-wise it doesn't look like you are that far off your peak. And you did beat Allie Purrier :)
No BS, ever

It was interesting to hear what your perspective was of the race, during the race, etc.. I enjoyed this video, the vlog, the race, very well done.
loved seeing you out there, and so interesting to hear the race from your perspective.
I loved this race recap style! It was super interesting to hear about your mindset during the race while watching the race!
Glad you enjoyed!

Well done Allie! Great video as usual and another great step forward.
I was so confused when I saw you on the start line while watching the live broadcast! I mean, happy confused. But confused!
For your fans it is great to see you out there racing and competing at all this season. Congrats on how far you have come. And your thoughts on this race seem 100% solid to me. some day some intelligent young female runner is going to realize that in these championship 5k races.. a lot of the field is doubling and tripling 10k .. 1500m ... so they want to go out really slow in the last day 5k .. the opportunity is there for someone to put an early lap on the field.. someday someone is going to attempt it.
It has happened...rarely with success other than "nice try!". The most successful was John Ngugi '88 5K gold.
I’m sure she’ll be training with the UW team, but she had a great season!
@@allie_ostrander Only for one year...time flies ;)
Good job.. keep working
Yeah that’s a reasonable idea! 7 miles is my usual, but maybe I’ll try doing less!
@@allie_ostrander It might be worth a test -- an experiment -- prior to a low key event. Best of luck.
Although I really so love a tactical race, I'm a good sit and kicker, at the start of the bell lap I start opening up my stride and then with 200m to go I completely sprint and give it all that I've got - I can make up a lot of time and usually make a pretty big gap between myself and the person behind me.
i hope u can find the confidence to believe in yourself and sit and kick off much faster pacee next year :)
Your head is in the right place. Impressive showing 24rth to 16th! Gain strength and confidence from this race...
8:08 spencer😳😳😳😳
Brutal heat. Not fun for a track 5k.
Not too bad when you really only race a mile! Haha
"I'm in DASH MODE!!"
Such a crazy race! I’m honestly really glad I did it just because it’s a once in a lifetime type of race experience!
Yeah, that’s definitely something I learned from the race!
Let's go!
Nice
Great video, enjoying the Survivor references haha. Do you have a favorite season/player?
Tony from Cagayan 🙌
@@allie_ostrander He's hilarious, good choice 👍👍
There are minimum speed requirements on highways, there should be something like that in races. Like anyone slower than x seconds per lap (depending on distance) is automatically disqualified 😅
I’m just surprised to see how much group mindset there is in a race, not so much individual tactics
That's honestly a very interesting concept for a race!
Just curious Allie, did you get driven all the way to Eugene? Great running by the way! 💪😃
Yes I did! Professional passenger 🙋♀️
Don't know how I missed this but then again....guess I didn't. Maybe there will be a 4 legged Pacer in the future. It looked like fun with the last lap and finish, something to build upon.
Georgie takes the lead next year 😉
@@allie_ostrander Peach Mango Bang...and he may be in it to win it!
That was a strange race, I kind of figured it would tactical race but now that slow, lol. You did well for saying it was only your second 5k of the season. But, that tactical racing is not going to work against those Ethiopian and Kenyan girls at worlds.
Portugal 🇵🇹
You still did very well! Gained alot of knowledge and performed better then your rank going in, thats still a win :)
Do you think if you cut out the social media and the youtube videos and focus on running you would perform better?
I honestly feel like they help me keep a good perspective about everything and enjoy the process!
I did the same thing in the sectional semifinal meet except after the first lap I than fell back in the fast heat and ran 53 sec off my pe

Races don’t always go as planned, but it helps to reflect and try to learn from the experience.
Good
Heat did not help that befuddling pace the first few ks. Main thing is you partook in the action and can make necessary adjustments...you have time & talent on your side😉
First thing I want to say is congratulations on your Freihofer win. I was wondering why the 5k? I thought you were a steeple chase runner?
I’m just taking a year off the steeplechase because it’s hard on the body
