18 Camping Etiquette Tips for Newbies and Not So Newbies

- When camping at campgrounds there are written and unwritten rules of etiquette. Whether you are tenting or RVing many of the same rules apply. We have compiled 18 camping etiquette rules, that we have seen being broken over and over, as we travel the province. Some of these rules are specific to Ontario Provincial Parks but most are for any kind of park.
Most of the people breaking the rules do so because they don't know. This video is for them. Some people break the rules because they just don't care. We hope this video helps convince them to care.
This may be an eye opener for newbies and we believe that even the most experienced camper might get some nugget of information from this.
No rules were actually broken when recording this video. All rule breaking was simulated :)

My pet peeve is the horn noise when continuously locking and unlocking of vehicles.
It's funny that you mention that one because friends we are currently camping with did that. I asked them to turn off the sound. It never occurred to them that it might bother people but when you're locking and unlocking the truck 20 times a day it can get real annoying fast.

And the lights that flashes everytime they lock and unlock at night !
Yes! If possible, disable the "beep" sound while camping.
Good video...1 thing that is a pet peeve for us is the previous tenants have not left by the designated time. there is a debate out there that it possibly should be changed to noon as some private parks use that time frame. but when you have travelled and get to your site just after 2pm for provincial parks and you can't get on after a long drive it is very frustrating. They are now taking your time away from you. We have had this happen several times.

Or people showing up at 11 am and expecting you to be gone. I was packing up at 11 and a car sitting in the middle of the lane waiting for me and shouting at me to get out. Guess what. I went to the beach until 1, then packed up. Just obey the rules.
One of my biggest pet peeve’s is people doing dishes at the water tap or comfort station. Very glad you brought it up.

We are guilty of doing it once :-( We saw others doing it and we followed. Will never do it again.
Honestly it’s common sense to add a sink for dishes to be washed.. like what do they think ppl are supposed to do with their dishes.. the whole point is to being reusable and the water stations are a disaster most times… I watch Korean camping videos and their comfort stations by far outdo ours..
Great video! One I would add is to walk/run/cycle on the right hand side of the road only in parks (and always). It's crazy how many times I've been stuck driving behind people cycling four people wide blocking the entire road, totally oblivious to a vehicle crawling behind them trying to get back to their site.

Nice job! Been camping since 1983. From tent to trailer but had to stop due to disability. I have to comment on the fire wood! The bugs...beetle as per the history came over in pallets / skids from the Orient! Treated?.? Restrictions on wood , I believe is a Parks Canada way of having you buy their wood which is not local....from Quebec or Northern ontario and is the MAJOR COMPLAINT about it being wet! Buy from locals or go to a contractor / wood worker for fresh scrap,,,free. & dry!

At the Nova Scotia Provincial Parks, there is a dishwashing station in each park, usually in a covered alcove outside, with at least 2 huge sinks and shelving and counterspace.
That's a great idea. I'm sure it would get a lot of use. We've seen a few Ontario Parks with dishwashing stations but not many.
Presqu'ile had one at the comfort station when we there. It was great.
We camped in Manitoba in White Shell PP. Everyone except me and perhaps two other campers did not have Christmas lights or night lights. We walked around the grounds at night and it felt like a Penny Arcade. True story.
This is a great list. Some of these I do not have to worry about as I'm currently a tent camper, but I do have an Airstream Base Camp 20X on my 5- to 10-year camping plan list 😄. With a daughter possibly going off to college soon, however, my budget is saying no right now lol 😃.
It is sad that these things which should be common sense actually need to be said and are not that common given what I have witnessed a lot of other campers doing even in the last few years alone as the popularity of it seems to have exploded.
I try to be understanding and have some compassion in that other campers may not desire the same kind of camp setup nor the ultra quiet and relaxing experience that I look for when I camp. More often than not, however, I have witnessed campers who have almost a complete disregard for not only the Park and the natural environment, but also their campsite neighbours as well. I had one experience at Long Point in 2023 which I won't bore you with the details, but my friend and I could only get a site in Monarch's Rest near the pull-thru section of Firefly Campground as the Radio Free Cottonwood was booked solid. Three families around us decided to turn their sites into a backyard party complete with loud music, alcohol and the usual spirited games of cornhole and holey board.
I wish all campers at Provincial Parks were respectful and caring like you folks 👍.

ALL of my PET PEEVEs over my 50+ years of camping.. More and more of this is happening and less and less wardens doing patrols.
Just spent a week at macgregor point and didn’t see a warden ONCE doing even a SINGLE patrol. It’s really sad what has been happening

With the end of the camping season upon us, there are several things we observed this summer that were very annoying. 1....People who go camping, but are totally unprepared and/or ignorant of park/camping rules...i.e..don't have anything to store water in; wander around for a place to wash dishes because they didn’t bring anything to do dishes with or didn’tknow they had to; forget to bring an extension cord, even though they booked a hydro site and brought electric appliances; try and start a fire with lighter fluid because they didn't bring an ax; being unprepared for the weather. 2....Twinkle lights....everybody seems to have them but our neighbors at Emily PP had them on 24/7, including a Christmas tree they brought along. It was super annoying.....and the park people did nothing when they did their drive by. 3....people who don't put out fires properly. Campfires are part of camping.....but there is a right way to do it. One of the reasons we camp is to enjoy fresh air. Fires that are not properly doused tend to smoke excessively and/or could ignite again. We had 2 sites close to us make fires in the morning before leaving and then leave with fires still smoking in the fire pits. We reported it, but park staff did nothing. We ended up putting water on the fire ourselves. With all the forest fires this summer, this is not acceptable and park staff should be more responsive! 4....Being inconsiderate in the bathrooms and showers...e.i. not flushing toilets; leaving "stuff" on the toilet seats; leaving the showers "messy". Makes you wonder what their bathrooms are like at home.

Hi folks and thanks for the great video. Those are all my pet peeves as well and I agree with all of them with the exception of where you suggest people go to the lake and wash up (without soap) in the absence of showers.
Great Tips. But we mustn’t forget kids. Just like people do not want to hear barking dogs, some people do not want to hear screaming kids.
Kids will be kids and you can’t keep them quiet while camping!
Thank you! I am such a newbie! I accidentally caused wet/muddy spots a couple times recently where it was inconvenient for others. Thankfully Colorado dry air fixed my mistake quickly. I am loving each step of learning, though!

One other one you touched on was dog issues. I have a dog and I never take her on the "people" beach and it makes me so mad when I see people having there dog on the beach. Every Prov park I have been too have fog beaches so there is no need for this!

These are great etiquette tips! As a new camper luckily I haven't made any of these "taboo mistakes". We've seen a few people get in trouble at the park for breaking some of the park rules in our last few camping trips.

Great video, as always! Thanks for using your platform for getting this info out. It seems many people don't educate themselves about the Park rules or give much thought to the fact that a couple of mm of nylon can offer good protection from the weather - not so much from noise.

Thanks for your support. We see and hear about camping etiquette faux pas all the time. They can really detract from an enjoyable time. We know this video won't change much but if it changes some people's behavior that's a start.
For Sibbald Point and some other parks we sometimes have to look past our negative experience from that one visit to find the positive. For Sibbald Point it was the massive crowds. For Port Burwell it was constant rain and mud. Every park we go to is someone's favorite park so we try to do it justice.

I've seen online that some Nova Scotia provincial parks have special dishwashing sinks outside the comfort station, which is handy if you are tent camping.

Great etiquette tips!! Addition to filling/dumping station etiquette...make sure you know which side of your trailer has the clean water fill intake and grey/black water outlet and choose your lane accordingly. Have been behind people more than once who choose the wrong lane and then hold up both lanes while they fill or dump their trailer.

Another DON'T - pay attention to the sign in time on the reservation. We were packing up our site on the day we were leaving and it was round 11:30 to Noon. The people that reserved the site after us unloaded all their things on the site AS WE WERE PACKING UP, WITHOUT ASKING. They had a friend bring them out and the friend "couldn't wait until 2 pm" so they just piled all their camping gear on one side of the site, once again without asking us!. Due to the fact we were leaving in about 1 hour, it felt really petty to complain but still - very rude.
I use the Cake brand dry shampoo and conditioner (at Shopper’s 🇨🇦 brand) when I camp and wipes like you guys showed and it works so well! As someone who works in the medical field it is actually really good for us as human’s to take breaks from soaps that strip the natural oils off our hair, skin and scalp!
How is it for coloured hair? Does it strip the colour off darkened hair and allow gray to peak through?
I am a little afraid to use stuff like this just because of the potential to do that.
Great video as always! We once had people walk through our camp site at a private campground and I was in shock since it never happened at the provincial parks. Let's just say my last time at a private campground!
I don't think we've ever had it happen but so many people tell us it happened to them and it's a big pet peeve.
We had that happen for the first time in 50+ years of camping. I was astounded that someone would consider that ok to do, while we were sitting at the picnic table eating dinner! WOW
@@CampingwiththeColes We have never had this problem in the 50 yrs I have been camping but just spent a week at Pog Lake and it was constant. I really couldn't believe it, and the same people even after I asked them not to. I really love Algonquin but the campers need to watch your video!!!!!
Hi Ben and Cheryl, another great video. Maybe you should approach Ontario Parks and they could show this at all Ontario parks to help newbie campers.
My biggest pet peeve is when we arrive at a new campsite there is lots of garbage around, such as food wrappers or cigarette butts or even tissues.
My husband and I always leave a campsite like we found it, hopefully it was clean to begin with. Before we leave we always pick up any garbage that is left on the site and make sure it is clean for the next campers. Sometimes we find garbage still in the fire pit that people think they have burned but there are still remnants of whatever garbage they left, Such as partially burned pop cans. Why are some people so lazy that they cannot recycle their pop cans.
Yeah, leaving the campsite full of garbage is another one. I don't understand what is so difficult about leave a clean campsite.
Excellent video! My pet peeve: The loud sound of outhouse/vault toilet doors slamming through the night. I wonder if there is a way people could do this more softly (and still be safe in terms of avoiding germs).

Very timely, indeed! Our relatives got a ticket by a warden in Algonquin PP for trying to fly a drone in fall 2021. Our relatives' complaint was that the wardens were watching them unpack their drone. They could have stopped them from flying it, but they waited to catch them in the act and hand a ticket of $200 to them.
As regards dog, we had another atypical experience. Sometimes in 2014 at Turkey Point PP, our car camping site was the worst we ever got. It had no privacy. A trail went almost by the boundary from the camping ground to the washrooms. It was OK during the day time, but by dusk, K2's, our big white Kuvasz, guarding instinct started kicking in. Unfortunately, we were so used to K2's guard duties, we did not register it. People, otoh, were using washrooms often, but to our advantage, it was a noisy camping ground. However, by 10 pm, a camper came to us requesting to do something about the dog. We had to put him in our RV for rest of the night.
That's a cheap shot from the warden. He should have just told them not to do it rather than watch them set up then ticket then for doing it.
I'd say we see drones flying in about 50% of the parks we've been to this season. I suspect that none of them are licenced to fly a drone or they would know the law about flying them in parks and over people.
I agree with 95% of what your saying about lights. We have little solar powered lights that we put by our extension cord running to the box so when it's dark and we're headed to the washroom we don't trip and get hurt.
I do agree with the rest of your etiquette tips though...thank you for making this video.
We also have some small solar lights. They only dimly illuminate a few feet. I don't think they'd be bothering anyone. It's the bright lights like the ones on the trailer or bright awning lights that are bothersome.
Could just use a flashlight.
I don’t like when people have their generators going. If you really need power then book an electrical site. So much noise!!

I've been in line for the dump station for almost two hours once, it sucks. But it was also the last trip before putting the trailer in storage so I had to take the extra time to flush the tank. There were at least 10 trailers behind me, I felt bad, but I had to to take the extra 5 minutes or so...
Thanks for this. Covid crowds really have changed camping. One pet peeve for me and probably everyone who works at the parks: the green mesh bags the campfire wood comes in are NOT recyclable. They are garbage. Don't leave them hanging on number posts.
Yep, that's a big one for a lot of people.
Also…Don’t burn garbage in the fire pit. ALL my trips this year have been littered with stuff that doesn’t burn buried in the fire pit - especially beer cans etc.
Another point to add, is that when parents take their kids camping, please be responsible and make sure your child is following the rules
I have a pet peeve against Ontario Parks and not sure if it's just me that has the issue. When you are booking your site you can't see the park alerts unless you go into info. I had Samuel De Champlain booked for months before I found out they had no power and I had to switch to Grundy Lake for this weekend. Surprisingly I was able to get a great site for 4 night
The power went out on our first day at Samuel de Champlain back in July 2020 in the midst of a heat wave. Can't believe they still haven't rectified the issue.
Love your videos! My last trip at Sibbald (my least favorite park) a trailer pulled in across from me very late in the day. They only came in to dump their grey water *in a campsite*. Thankfully it wasn't black but WTH.

Thanks for sharing these important rules and suggestions! One more I would add: don't have your watercraft (SUP, canoe etc) within the buoy markers at the beach! That's the swimming area...

The ones I see the most are washing dishes at the tap and scavenging for firewood. I think 99% of campers follow the rules. The only issue we had was years ago at Killbear. The people across from us overcrowded their site. They had 3 cars and one was blocking part of the road, they were all drunk and had music going till 2am and they were load. The warden showed up and I asked if they were going to do anything and they said no because the people are drunk and the don't want them to leave.
In Canada Park - Banff for ex, there are sinks to wash dishes outside the comfort stations. And well yeah there are a lot more comfort stations than at our Ontario Parks. :(
There are a few Ontario Parks with dish washing stations. Arrowhead, Agawa Bay are a couple I can think of off the top of my head. I think many parks are going that way as they do upgrades and renovations.
Another pet peeve, check in late at night and use their high beams to set up the tents ! High beams were on for 1hour with car running !

Only Disney's Fort Wilderness really allows much outdoor illumination, but even they might not want you running it all night.
I noticed you are filling your fresh water tank when ever you enter a camp. would you need to do that if your site was a serviced site with a water hook up on your site?
We rarely have a site with a water hook up. Only two Ontario provincial parks that I know of have water hook ups. So when we arrive at a park we fill up our fresh water tank. If we had a water hook up at the site there would be no reason to fill up the fresh water tank because we would hook up via hose at our site.
My observation of Don't - is obvious. Don't disturb the nature. I saw someone posting her 5yr-old daughter's photo with lots of flowers in her hand😢 not only damaging,
they can be poisoness. Another time I saw parents encouraging kids to kick/snap off icicles in a cave, or step on to break off the thin ice on the ground by a rapid falls. Parents pls teach kids to leave the nature as is and watch out for their safety.

the lights think is a good point. last year when we were winter camping at New Years there was someone there that had so many lights ( Christmas lights ) it looked like a Used Car Lot. We felt for the neighbors luckily we were a few site away
One big edicate violation I have read about is that some US National Parks have had problems with people leaving fecal matter on the ground even.
One thing that seems to be an issue with campers is people that have non-electric sites pluging into electric sites.personally I've never had an issue with this as long as I can plug in my 30a and 15a I'm good.
Just last week we had a guy ask us if it was ok to plug his power station into our plug. It has an air compressor on it and he had a leaky tire so he needed to charge it up. I had no problem with that. It was good he asked and I had a spare outlet. Plugging in without asking I think would be no no.

I’ve heard , dont know for sure, that u can fly a drone if it’s small enough, don’t know the actual weight but apparently there is a number u can stay under. Do you know anything about this
If you have a drone under 250 grams in weight, like the DJI Mavic Mini which is 249 grams, you don't need to register it and you don't need a drone pilots licence to fly it. However the other drone rules still apply and it's illegal to fly it in a provincial or national park.
One of mine is the wood bags hanging on the posts....they are not reused or recycled or picked up...much to everyone's assumptions
People still do that all the time. The bags are just garbage but people must still think that the park recycles them somehow.
Interesting! We are park staff picking them up in Emily in June. We thought they were reused for more firewood. This is good to know.
It is also interesting to note that all the firewood seems to come from Algonquin - not local forests to each campground.
I have just started to camp in my converted van. I am concerned as to what I can do about my food, garbage, etc. that needs to be locked into a vehicle. Because I'm sleeping in my van with my two small dogs we need to keep the windows open quite a ways in order to not overheat inside the van even though I have three fans blowing on us some nights. How do we stay safe from animals that can smell the food in our coolers or our garbage bags because the windows are open?
We used to have a hybrid travel trailer with the canvas ends so it wasn't very secure against bear intrusion. We just made sure all food was put away in cupboards and fridge. Nothing was left out on the table. That's the best you can do. Anything that is very smelly like garbage can be put in a bucket with a lid to seal in the smell.
@@CampingwiththeColes Yeah if I had a hybrid I would still have a vehicle to put the cooler and other food in. With all this bear talk since starting up camping again it's gotten me very worried about the fact that I will be sleeping with all of my food. I'd rather leave it outside for the bears to get it rather than the bears being able to snack on me and my dogs as well as my food. They say a bear can smell food for up to 20 miles away. Seems one doesn't really have a chance if a bear wants your food no matter what you do. Another issue is that you can only control what you do at your campsite, while the people at the next campsite may be leaving chip bags, etc. strewn all over the ground. Just saw that the other weekend when I was camping. :(
@@CampingwiththeColes great video. Agree 100% with everything you said. We have a hybrid with three bunk ends. We just got back from a week at Grundy and saw bears 4 times during our stay. Talked with the park warden about hybrids and bears and they told me they never had an issue with hybrid trailers and bears. We had a bear walk across our site but didn't stay. Went to sites that people didn't leave clean. Keep your site clean and you won't have any issues with bears. Or any animal.
@@lifewithpugwinkle some parks have bear boxes that you can request to use and they'll deliver it to you site. We saw them at Grundy Lake PP two weeks ago. A staff member said they have a few and they are mostly used by people that don't have a vehicle to secure their food, such as motorcycle and bicycle campers.
@@CampingwiththeColes I'd definitely be asking for a bear box. Are they big enough to hold your coolers? If not, how do you keep your food cold? I've never seen a bear box.

Nope. It's fine to go in after hours. Go to the office the next morning to register.

@@realwm oh I see what your referring to now. I think that means if you don't have a reservation. You can't go into a campground after hours without a reservation. It's fine if you have a site reserved and go to it after hours because you paid for it. They don't want people just pulling in after hours and grabbing a site when they don't have any reservation. That's my understanding of it.

Also, why do people keep placing plastic firewood bags next to their site # post??? Please stop! and place it in the proper trash bin!
It's actually illegal to pick up twigs and fallen branches for your fire in an Ontario Provincial Park when front country camping (car camping). You're only allowed to do that when back country camping.
As for the firewood bags on people's posts. I think people believe the park reuses or recycles them. They see others put them on their posts so they do too. The fact is they don't get reused or recycled, they're just garbage so please discard them as such.
Also maybe train your dog what leave it means!! So they don’t stick their nose in another animals business & not get hurt!!
Running gas generators should be prohibited
One we encountered recently was a group of 3 families camping together in which they had all their tents on one site, and used the other two sites for parking. I get that they paid for those sites... but honestly that's a bit rude in my opinion. They could have parked the extra vehicles in the lots and left those sites open for other campers.
I will disagree with the kids riding in the bed on the truck...we used to ride on the tailgate...it was fun....kids today wouldn't even survive this because of this so called danger indoctrination... rules are to tight...relax people relax
This rule is the law in Ontario so I'd recommend that people obey it, if not for safety sake to at least avoid getting a ticket and/or a call from Children's Aid.
@Camping with the Coles I just wanted to apologize if I came across the wrong way. I know it's law but as a kid early mid 90s it was normal...I often wonder what changed...happy camping...Balsam Lake Provincial Park and Rondeau provincial park this year..will be back to Wakami Lake provincial park next year. You Two are great campers should try Wakami Lake Provincial Park...the sound of the wind whispering in the pines and the fishing is excellent..no hydro or running water brings true campers
