This vibrato discussion will go on and on and we Brits should not react badly to someone else's point of view. I can understand how to some ears it may sound OTT. For me it's the signature style of British brass bands and I love it. These two fine musicians are master practitioners of the British style (unsurprisingly). If you want to hear an American style of cornet playing '"senza vibrato" which is diametrically opposite to the British brass band one listen to Gerard Schwartz on his recording called "Cornet Favorites" which is available on youtube. Not better, not worse ..... but most definitely different. We pays our money and we takes our choice.
Regardless of what other critics may have said, he is NOT using too much vibrato. This sounds very similar to the Herbert Clarke approach and was the fashion of lyrical playing at the turn of the last century when cornet players were emulating violinists . Many techniques from past ages have been watered down throughout the years and as a result are not held in esteem. Listening to the original arrangement of Rhapsody In Blue is a great example.
Richard Marshall has a pefect cornet sound for me - not too 'twee' but really sweet and strong and of course his technique is awesome - how do you get this good ??? lol x back to the drawing board for me
British Brass Band vibrato is wildly different than that used by trumpet and cornet players in almost any other form of music performed today. Some feel it is over the top. Deal with it, or move on.
Roger describes three types of vibrato, but I do not think he described the type used by Richard and other top British cornet players. It is neither hand, nor lip/jaw, nor the type of hard air pulse described by Roger. It is, rather, a slight variation of air pressure produced by the throat, somewhat like a singer's vibrato. What is pulsed is mostly loudness (amplitude) and secondarily pitch. It is difficult to do well, but it is potentially the best, I feel. The too much Vib. was for demonstration purposes only if he had played the passage with just the right amount most beginners would not pick it up.

I agree with you Kevin Morgan. That's too much vibrato for me, but they're quite good cornet players I think.
