I drove mini autos regularly in the 1970s.its an AP leamington gearbox specially made for the mini and austin/morris 1100 cars,also used with the metro.introduced around 1965,with the 998cc engine its fine for city driving but a bit low geared for open road.the metro with 1300cc was quite a bit faster.
It likes to change gear very quick but are not great cruisers because it's so low geared. Here in the UK Mini auto's weren't that popular and if the gearbox went bang and if you wanted to convert it to manual you had to change the engine because the block is different.
Hello, I'm thinking of buying an Austin with an auto gearbox, but all the professionals are discouraging me from doing so. Too many problems with the auto gearbox, and the parts would also be hard to find and much more expensive. Is it a money pit and what routine maintenance do you do on the auto box so that I don't end up with a broken box on the side of the road. Thanks for any information you can give me.

Esta caja se la pusiste posteriormente o vino con ella? porque tengo entendido que los MINI siempre han sido de transmisión Manual. Si se la pusiste posteriormente, en dónde la compraste y qué requiere para adaptarla? Saludos.
You do that with the accelerator. Hold it at full until you want to change up a gear. Drop off the throttle a bit, and after it changes up, full throttle again until you want the next change.

original mini matic was different than this thing right? it was like the Leyland bus's semi auto transmission

Yes it is 1.3 Spi Auto. My bad on editing. Stock final drive come with the gearbox.

Yeah that auto seems decent proper go cart the 1000cc are slow but torque isn’t too bad at least on the manuals
I loved it. Can be very nippy if you know how to use it and override when necessary

Not really a fan of this gearbox. It changes up far too early. You have to manually hold the gears to get it to rev.
