So beautifully illustrated! I absolutely love you guys for putting that knowledge on here. I managed to saved up with my hard earned money to purchased all the stainless still jewel like looking peaces and rope and so forth, and since, I have been learning to traverse through hundred foot willow oaks with this system. I'm pursuing certification in Aboriculture.
What do you mean "self tail"? I'm assuming you mean the running end of the rope gliding through the prussic knot? It does with enough weight on the running end. I didn't go for anything with eye splices for my schwabiisch prusic - I just used a couple of fishermens knots WORKS FINE!
I know using the hitch climber without a spliced eye climbing line is not recommended and frowned apon. But could I tie a figure 8 with a big loop putting the knot a foot or so above the friction hitch? ( so it wouldn't be able to lock the friction hitch in a sliding position).
I was climbing oce and this guy was just talking with us and threw in a couple of questions about knots. Two hours later we heard this almighty crash like a boulder falling from the fifty metre cliff! He had tied an ordinary poly rope to a tree (incorrectly) using a knot I had described to him. He tied his son to his chest to abseil together. He had to have both legs amputated because he was holding the weight of both of them when they fell to the ground and his leg bones were shattered.
I agree with with you on the price aspect, tying your own is definitely cost effective. I hate the way companies (Sherrill in particular) charge an exhorbitant amount to splice an eye into a piece of rope that costs a dollar per foot. It may be just my backround, and probably where I live and work, but I am not a big fan of just one knot with no redundancy. Have you tried an anchor hitch backed up with a sliding double overhand knot or Poacher's Knot? (ABOK # 409, p 65). Cheers.
Hey how did u get on with this type of pulley?? i'm still undecided, i use a valdotain, with isc pulley to tend slack, don't know whether it is worth it and whether it makes any real difference?? when accending taller trees i use a static double line with just a klemheist positioned at arms length, and when in the canopy i switch to the VT and standard pulley, for shorter accents i use a really long blakes and hip thrust/foot lock, then switch to a VT ..thanks
HI, Thanks for this video. I've been using this system for about 6 months now, liking it very much. At about 1:06-1:10 of the video you have a still shot that seems to show a DMM Revolver in the center hole of the hitch climber pulley, wondering what that technique is about? Thanks, William
You will need either the ocean rope or similar, you can buy these ready made with 2 eyes or you can tie the fisherman's knot. Don't forget start low and safely when starting. I'm going to start using this next week, but I'm going to use the Knut Hitch knot, also if you don't have a termination eye on the working end of your rope, use a long looped bowline so the bowline knot does not interfere with the prussic/hitch knot, as it will not grip. Post a video of what you find out, so we can all see!
I think after a certain height it self tends, which in turn means you can pull yourself up with both arms. Also before it self tends you just pull on the tail which means you don't need to push the "prussic" up. I would say this system is relatively cheap compared to Spiderjacks, zig zags etc. I suppose if you like this then you can think about investing in more shiny things :-)
I prefer having my hitch far away so when i am decending / branch walking it gives me better balance. it does make it annoying if you want to move up just a couple of inches tho.
@maxinpains : if you have never climbed trees then you will never know how nice this pulley is. if you have and you don't see the advantages of this pulley - i feel sorry for you.
For both mrs and srt with rope wrench. But I would suggest a shorter prusik for that friction hitch shown or a different hitch like a VT. All the extra tail will give you crazy set back to deal with and make slack tending suck
Reading all these old comments its amazing to see how far climbing tech has come

Nice system. I am a fan of the Schwabisch, myself. I have not used that style of pulley but I'll certainly give it a shot. Cheers.
Hitch climber is a great invention. Nice Vid.
Thanks a lot for a simple explanation and great video example.
What is the advantage of the pulley and extra biners? I just use a prusik and it gives me all the advantages I ever need like a quick split-tail.
excellent edition !

Excellent.
why is the hitch so far away from the pulley? It seems to cause too much wasted movement.
so relaxing

To finish off with, we suggest you use a rubber.

This setup is junk... look at the slop! VT All the way

Is there enough room in a Rock O Wire Eye carabiner for this or is it better to use the rubber stopper?

I suppose you could do this with out the pulley, yes?.
Brilliant!
With a shorter prusik the system would even be useful

IT.S VERY GOOD
"here is a knot you will never escape from"
i like it!
@THISISLICKFOLD it just moves the hitch up when u go up

@THISISLICKFOLD you can move using only one hand
I agree -
whats the name of that musical piece in the intro??
where can i find this song???
WHAT SONG IS THIS!??
Tali warna coklat itu namanya apa dan diameter berapa?
why do you guys always show double line systems.
why not a single line system, you only need 1/2 the rope for the same height
jadekayak01 you still need the double length of line to tie either a canopy or basal anchor at the t.i.p
You sound just like the guy from Flight of the Conchords
Go buy a Petzl shunt best climbing investment of my life!
great idea but i'll stick with my grigri
자일사리기
Sounds like a normal bloke to me
man what a creepy voice
