The shorn hair, head shaving and wearing of simple robe is to signify a break from worldly desires and from family, to be totally devoted to Buddha and his teachings. He or she will eat only one simple vegetarian meal a day, donated by adherents. The rest of the day is devoted to temple work, devotional studies and meditation. Amitabha!!
