Hey Luke! Personally, the easiest way to catch a barramundi is using a 4/0 octopus beak hook with a live herring or mullet, bigger the better - don't be too afraid to throw a 15 or 20cm mullet on your hook, only 60 or 70cm barramundi have been known to even eat 25cm mullet. Hooking your live baits through the lip and nose will help them hold better and stay alive better. Fish between the tides, preferably from low to high and cast near mangroves or structure with shade. Follow these and I'm sure you'll have your first barra in no time! Also with your drag, if your line is near structure, you're not holding your rod and your drag is undone like you showed in the video, then you are almost guaranteed to lose a legal sized barra. Put your drag around where you can pull a tiny tiny bit out using just one hand without wrapping. Cheers.
@@lukefalzon no problem man! I'm from Townsville, about a 3 or 4 hour drive south from Cairns. I'm coming out to Cairns in a few weeks to go out on my uncle's big reef boat to go to the great barrier reef for a few days and then I'll be staying at Cairns for a few days after. Might see you then!
Small tip too give a go, has worked for me anyway is with the live herring two smaller ones through the back of the tail a couple mil up from the tail does the job for fingers and jack really well, mullet is the overall better bait for barra however! Love the vids keep it up!
Hey mate, I only just came across your videos and I love them. You actually show the reality of fishing and that's great.. I'm up in the NT and the what I've found works for me is fishing the change in tide from low to high. Also keep in mind that wherever you catch live bait barra will be because that's what they are after as well. Fishing the mouth of a creek should also provide the goods. Hey Luke, my tips to catch some Barra and jacks are to fish close to the bank where there are lots of mangroves and structure (sunken trees, logs etc) and cast infront of those structure on one hour before or after the high tide and you should have some tight lines!
Hey Luke mate, I love the videos and just wanted to tell ya, that creek you were fishing in (with the flood gates), is called Hills Creek. It is quite possibly one of the best barra spots ive fished around the estuary. My father and i caught a 120cm barra on the other side of those flood gates. The trick we found was to spend the day catching large mullet (as big as possible but keep all the mullet you get) in the cast net, then spend the night standing up on the road on top of the flood gates, and fish the other side to what you fished. We hook the mullet through the back (like you did but a little deeper so they stay on better), and use larger hooks (specifically "Circle Hooks") because they are far better for hooking barra, since they are self setting. Good luck mate.
owww ok that makes sense thank you for the heads up bro it means a lot 😊 I am deff gonna try that next time thank you again bro and are you from cairns?

You have shown me that at the end of a dark tunnel there is always light, I also am on a similar quest and have donuted 5 times already, the day it does come will feel sweeter than ever. I think personally the hooks you were using may be a bit small, for the estuarine systems there tend to be smaller models so it is important to utilise smaller hooks to get a more natural bait presentation, as the fish in those small systems tend to be more skittish. Great Idea with using the cast net sinkers, you really do make the best out of a good situation. Love the video, keep em coming. ❤.

Utilise every bit of your surroundings!!! Those gates are a great place to flick lures and also try parking your boat on the boat ramp there and try fishing both sides
Hey Luke, you seem to have mastered step 1 to catch a barra, which is getting live bait. Bait your mullet or herring through the nose. I think you are hooking the live bait close to the edge of the bait and it's just breaking off. I'd go back to that little hole where you got some decent bites. Try a lure as well while you have a couple of live bait out. You are sooo close! Well done.
Love your videos brother you will land a beauty soon... mullet sards mudcod are great bait. Try floating a live bait sinker down the bottom 3 way swivel and a float at thw top... make the float adjustable for deeper and shallower water.
@@lukefalzon i have been great mate flicking frog lures in the morning and arvs for barra and red bream since the season opened and have been enjoying it heaps, trying new things because vibe lures are getting to expensive. Hey mate keep trying you will get there. Barra wont swallow a livey straight away, they will mouth it for awhile and spit it if they feel resistance. Keep your drag loose and strike 5 or 6 seconds after the line starts to run. Best way is to use a bait runner or overhead reel that you can disengage and then engage instantly for the strike. Shimano Calcuttas are good for this 👍

Hey mate try a mix of a dropper rig and a running sinker on 2 rods. try and chase either mullet, herring, prawn even garfish for bait don’t worry about that other shit. Hook smaller mullet through the tail and larger mullet above the lip. 5-8/0 wide gape hooks. Reasonably tight drag.
Hey Luke just a quick tip when you hook the live bait hook them though the nose and you want your drag just a little bit loose that you can pull it a little bit out hope this helps 😀
5:01 that little drain with water running out of it. Luke sit outside out that and cast a livie right bext to it. Barra love running water like that, it provides extra oxygen in the water and hypes all the bait fish and predator fish
Use the lightest sinkers you can just enough to keep them on the bottom. Have your drag set and in the rod holder. It's easier catching lives on a low tide.
Hey bro , go right up on the causeway openings there's three in the inlet , should pick up a few with good livies 🤙top of tide first hour of run out , I'll take some live bait 😂 freeze them up man with salt and use out reef , they get smashed !!

That causeway is your spot for bait and big fish same as the trawlers they’ll hold jacks underneath, your running the wrong rig for current mate learn the patternosta rig, your hooks to big again also learn how to snell hooks , take your bait home with you and freeze individually and then you have bait/burly and a head start on the next trip , once again use the tide to wash baits underneath boats and jetties , I’m invested now lol if you want your first Barra go to the Tully river and banyan ck fish live prawn from the mountain creeks and you are guaranteed a Barra , it’s no good if the Tully is running dirty . Oh keep your rod in your hand at all times, a second rod with a floating surface bait … I can’t wait to see you get one … 🎉
Also I purchased a cast net. Spent a day practising how to throw it in my back yard. First cast I make it lands on some rocks. Totally unusable by the time I got it back. So it happens to the best of us lol
Hey mate, me personally I set my drag a little loser when sitting the rods especially live baiting so if a fish grabs it the line will run giving you time to tighten the drag and set the hook
Yooo bro, try use live bait the one U use but on river mouth where is freshwater and sea meets... A bit murky water condition... Especially when early tide in to its peaks tide...
Ur hooking him right but what we do with the mullet we take a zip tie and a 6 o hook poke the sip tie through his eye then tight it up then hook the hook through his nose through the zip tie cuz then the hook can't get out cuz its tied with the zip tie hope this works
Hey mate, I am an avid follower of yours and would love to tee up a session one day! I fish with a running sinker - around 1.2-1.5m of leader, I use a 5/0 to 7/0 wide gap hook depending on the size of the mullet I'm using. Creek mouths on a run out tide is always good - especially if there is a decent hole in the mouth. You want to fish around eddy's in the current. Slow water behind a bend, or a rock will hold barra if there is some depth
@@lukefalzon I’m a gold coaster mate !! Fishing not as good down here as it’s north ! I had the same issue keeping rods on “Rodney rod holder” kept getting strikes but never hooking until I put circle hooks on and BAM that’s all she wrote 🤣🤣

If you had a couple of lures to flick around like chase bait prawns , hard body's or some paddle tale soft plastics you would have more of a chance to catch something or maybe even a Barra 😅
That's was Saturday just gone I saw u fishing 6 29 min on your video than seen u casting for bait at the trawler jetty just near the boat ramp later on
Hey bro I was just wondering what type of go pro you use and whether you use the chest or head mount, and I was also wondering what editing tool you use because your videos are amazing!
When live bait fishing for barra, keep a close eye on your line. If it suddenly goes really slack wind like shit. Fish dont always swim away from you when they run
Tips don’t use weights when your during live bait and have the drag lose so is easy for it to run at the start and the tight it and rip it so it sets the hook and hook the live bait at the back of the fish where the tail cause they more of a chance cause the eat it from behind
5/0 mustard o'shaunghnessy for livies about finger tip to elbow length of leader to swivel then a small ball sinker on main line and fish last hour of run out to first hour of run in and try holes in the mouths of your smaller feeder creeks
@@lukefalzon good mate, always enjoy your content! I’m up in Port Douglas bro. If you ever come up for a fish, I’m happy to chase some dogs with ya 😎👌 hope you get blessed with a metery very soon! 🙌🏽
Hey Luke I would love to give you some advice and help you reach your goal of catching the mighty Barra I would be willing to drive up to cairns to come on a adventure with you and give you some tricks and tips I have learned from fishing far North Queensland 🎣
Dont be affraid to use dead herring as bait. They are dynamite on barra. I use a size 4 bronze baitholder, no sinker 30-60lb leader. Biggest so far was a skinny 92
@@lukefalzon from the sunny coast. Usually i fish at the barra park there. Barra there can be so picky at times. Other day i was there had the best of live baits, was trying silver bitys, mullet, prawns, herring... wouldnt touch the bait at all. Soon as i thew out dead herring, it got nailed ended up with around 5-6 for the arvo sesh. Loosing a few big ones. My mate he catches them in the passage in caloundra, he was telling me he was putting heaps of different live baits infront of there face, they wouldnt touch it. Soon as he puts down a live yellow tail pike they smash it. live baits probably would work better where you are up north.
Little tip, big hooks catch big fish, small hooks catch all fish. Drop down to a 2’o or 4’o hook, chase mullet for bait ( herring is a back up bait ), high tide is the hardest because there is just too much water and too many places for the fish to hide. Try one of the creeks that holds water on a low tide and fish the incoming, also I watch the episode where you fucked your cast net and I was screaming in my head to tell you to “ never, ever turn your back to the water when you are near it” walk up backwards, it might just save your life. I learnt that from the the local Aboriginal’s when I lived and fished in Arnhem Land, I live in Kewarra beach nowadays. Don’t give up, Cairns is a tough place to catch a Barra, but once you find your honey hole, turn the camera off, because it will be flogged out by the end of the week by everybody watching your posts

Hey Luke loving the vids mate, I fish for barramundi in fresh water in the isa and I use a 6/0 circle hook and use spangled perch for live bait and my biggest so far is 123cm anyway keep up the awesome work mate and happy fishing 🎣🎣🎣🍻🍻🍻
thank you so much bro that is amazing info, I will keep that in mind my bro thank you 👍🏽 where are you from?
Hey Luke I'm from Mount isa Queensland
Love the videos
cheers bro thank you it makes me happy you like them 😊 hope your well
Heres a good video idea you should fish for whiting they are really fun to fish and catch and plus they taste great
I don't no where to get them from up in cairns
One time I went out in the Barron had a cast for some live ones at the boat ramp got hundreds of em sadly the Barra season closed
can you please do a fishing video when you have a bed on your boat and you can only use lures to catch your food. love your videos
Yooo bro, try use live bait the one U use but on river mouth where is freshwater and sea meets... A bit murky water condition... Especially when early tide in to its peaks tide...
cheers brother thank you so much means a lot 😊
Good on ya for giving it a red hot go mate you’ll get there
Love the videos keep it up Luke
Tbh Murray cod are the best to catch
Brother you are really a smily person😊💯
Ur hooking him right but what we do with the mullet we take a zip tie and a
6 o hook poke the sip tie through his eye then tight it up then hook the hook through his nose through the zip tie cuz then the hook can't get out cuz its tied with the zip tie hope this works
Slow water behind a bend, or a rock will hold barra if there is some depth
cheers for the heads up bro thank you, where are you from bro?
@@lukefalzon I'm from tully bro
back at it again. keep on grinding king ;)
cheers my brother thank you for the kind words 😊
I’d be using 4 or 5 circle hooks ! If you leaving in rod in rod holder circle hooks will help hook
cheers brother I might go and get some, before I go where are you from?
@@lukefalzon I’m a gold coaster mate !! Fishing not as good down here as it’s north ! I had the same issue keeping rods on “Rodney rod holder” kept getting strikes but never hooking until I put circle hooks on and BAM that’s all she wrote 🤣🤣
sup man I see your fishing near me and I wondered if u wanna go fishing sometime and just saying i still never caught a barra because im still a beginer haha
Keep up the good work brother man 🙏
If you had a couple of lures to flick around like chase bait prawns , hard body's or some paddle tale soft plastics you would have more of a chance to catch something or maybe even a Barra 😅
I do but thats not the challenge bro
i was just in cairns this week for work, was looking out for ya haha try circle hooks bruz.. they go good
Try a 4/0 also try no sinker and just drifting. Cover more ground. Also live bait jigs are awesome
Love the vids keep it up
thank you brother how are you?
That's was Saturday just gone I saw u fishing 6 29 min on your video than seen u casting for bait at the trawler jetty just near the boat ramp later on
Video yang bagus 👍 semoga hari mu menyenangkan salam dari Indonesia 🙏🇮🇩
Hey bro I was just wondering what type of go pro you use and whether you use the chest or head mount, and I was also wondering what editing tool you use because your videos are amazing!
When live bait fishing for barra, keep a close eye on your line. If it suddenly goes really slack wind like shit. Fish dont always swim away from you when they run
ok Kool good to keep in mind my friend thank you so much my friend
Hey luke try match the hook size to the bait those bait were to small for 5/0 so try using a 3/0 or 2/0
ok brother thank you for the heads up 👍🏽
Awesome video Luke but Ur still not letting the net fall out of Ur back hand bro don't matter cos u still caught them
so your saying flick the net?
No bro Ur front hand dose all the work swing that front hand and let the net fall out of Ur back hand
Tips don’t use weights when your during live bait and have the drag lose so is easy for it to run at the start and the tight it and rip it so it sets the hook and hook the live bait at the back of the fish where the tail cause they more of a chance cause the eat it from behind
ok that makes sense my bro thank you for the heads up 👍🏽 how you been?
5/0 mustard o'shaunghnessy for livies about finger tip to elbow length of leader to swivel then a small ball sinker on main line and fish last hour of run out to first hour of run in and try holes in the mouths of your smaller feeder creeks
thank you brother means a lot hope your well
The best tip I can give you: take care of your live baits. Give them plenty of room, water and oxygen so they are in top condition 💪🏾
cheers my brother that means a lot how are you today?
@@lukefalzon good mate, always enjoy your content! I’m up in Port Douglas bro. If you ever come up for a fish, I’m happy to chase some dogs with ya 😎👌 hope you get blessed with a metery very soon! 🙌🏽
sick video man keep up the good work
cheers my brother how have you been?
@@lukefalzon very well bro. Yourself?
Strong drag, big circle hook and they will hook themselves. You have to use circle hooks bro. And when hooking the bait go either side of the backbone
ok brother thank you for the heads up bro 😊
need to be fishing for barra on low tide as they have less places to go. went to cairns marina last weekend and nailed an 89cm baz..
thats mint brother well done where are you from?
@@lukefalzon townsville mate, same as i was last video
i like to use circle hooks for live bait and any big baits in general you just let it sit and dont have to set the hook the fish sets it
ok brother thank you will keep in mind my friend
Luke you should probably tighten up your drag so the fish hook them selfves up much easier
Hi Luke great episode keep trying you will get one soon if you keep trying
thank you my brother
Hey Luke I would love to give you some advice and help you reach your goal of catching the mighty Barra I would be willing to drive up to cairns to come on a adventure with you and give you some tricks and tips I have learned from fishing far North Queensland 🎣
hey man thank you but I should be fine I will keep plugging away brother I love it by the way where are you from?
When you use live bait hook it at the tail and also use circle hooks as well
Awesome vid 👌
Is barramundi a hard fish to catch?
Stay on it bro they can’t hide from you forever 🤙🏻
hahahaha yeah my brother thank you for the heads up my friend
Dont be affraid to use dead herring as bait. They are dynamite on barra. I use a size 4 bronze baitholder, no sinker 30-60lb leader. Biggest so far was a skinny 92
ok thank you for the heads up bro I will deff try it next time, where are you from?
They like using top water lures for barramundi Hope that’s a good tip.
It's probably crabs taking your bait 👌🏿
you think?
Hey Luke I live Gordonvale and if you want to catch a Barra go to the boat marine big big barra
Also if you want Jacks fish near the bank in a little bit of hole where the are trees and logs in the water they like that stuff for shelter
ok brother I will keep that in mind thank you so much bro, have you been out for a fish?
@@lukefalzon yeah i go for a fish whenever i can i enjoy fishing
