This is what a true performer looks like. Alberta's voice control, her command of the microphone, her stage presence. Everything about her is polished and perfect! She makes me a better singer and a better person just by listening.
I loved her story, She was a Nurse working at New York City's Coney Island Hospital, I once worked in the E.R. there !!! then they realized she was a bit too old and retired her, even though she did her job well, then she went back to singing, this is her after !
She was so great !!!! I will always admire and love her !
They dont make people like this anymore, strong to the bone.
I'll never think of this song in the vain of Clapton after hearing this beautiful piece done with so much soul....
A truly phenomenal woman. I saw her in Greenwich Village in New York about 35 years ago. She was awesome. Truly a unique talent.
I remember her on 70's when she was preformed in a club the village NYC.
She would talk to the audiences like they were her children.
I had read about her when I lived in NY and a friend took me out on a date and we saw and spoke to Ms Hunter in the village in the seventies --She was gracious and it was so nice
I also used to see her at the Cookery in the Village in the early 1970s. Thanks for posting these videos, she was remarkable and through the magic of video and You Tube, her music lives on. Plus she is right - save some of your money to keep your personal strength and integrity!
OH, could she preach to today young woman singers!!!!! LISTEN UP GIRLS!
If you're fortunate you get to live what these women sing about....only if you're ready!
"if you have a dime save a nickel" WISDOM!
Amazing that she can still work magic with her voice in this great interpretation of the song that Bessie made famous !!!!
REST IN PEACE MISS ALBERTA HUNTER! YOU WERE THE BEST-EVER!
i am just 22 and i adore early 70s jazz and blues!!! this is really amazing!!! i cant stop listening to the deep and powerful tone of Alberta Hunter!!!
True class and showmanship!
A great performance of a bluesy vaudeville favorite. The lyric reads as true in today's hard times as it did back in the twenties and on into the great depression.
I only knew the Bessie Smith version. This one is lovely. 83 years old, she's delightful
She inspires me ,wisdom, poise and talent.
Alberta is amazing! I feel every lyric..an absolute ARTIST in every sense of the word!
She got that audience in the palm of her hand...
sooo much LOVE this woman can give us all

I was in the audience, Slaytheday..., and she was everything you say, and then some.

Thank you so much for this video
:-)
WOW!
Who could possibly have hit disliked this?
magnifique voix !
Jimmy Cox-whose daughter, "Baby Cox" recorded memorably with Duke Ellington's orchestra-did not write this specifically for Bessie, but she made the definitive recording of it.
BTW, Gerald Cook was no gentleman, he was a crook who stole all of Alberta's money (she had amassed quite a sum) and jewelry. Then he moved to Europe and drank himself to death. Alberta was a sweetheart as well as an amazing, versatile artist.
Lindo!!!! Lindo!
J'ai la vu souvent pendant le 70's
Another lover...
From Brazil..
Thanks for posting that! Thats a precious material!
what a formidable female...the kind of graceful aging we'd all like to achieve! i do believe, however, she was NEVER "Down and Out"!!!!
She didn't live upstairs. She lived on Roosevelt Island.
I've met prettier women, but none so beautiful!
I love this and bessie smiths version's better than eric clapton's, idk it just feels right haha
