    Comes With
Köchen-X Grill Grate - Wire-formed from food grade 304 stainless, we over-engineered not just to boil water, but flame grill whatever nature is serving.
    Waxed canvas sleeve
    Specifications New Old
    Weight 1lb 4oz / 566g 14.2oz / 404gr
    Height 5.5” / 140mm 6.25" / 15.9cm

    Width Bottom 4.9” / 125mm 5.0" / 12.7cm
Material 304 stainless steel with bead blast and high-heat ceramic coating
So what's different? Aside from the obvious; Stainless Grill Grate (added stability and practical cooking surface) -- we also increased the Baseplate Thickness by 25% (higher heat tolerance with less warping), and redesigned panels for Decreased Airflow (better initial windbreak and greater fuel longevity). However, the new Premium Finishes are some of the most important changes to us.... because if you're like us, you spend a lot of time in the woods, alone, gazing into your Stöker. Meaning, thoughtful design aesthetics absolutely matter.

Based on your review and comments, I am thinking that if the new version was modified by the company to be perhaps 3/4 to 1 inch taller along with removing metal from the middle of the top on each side piece to increase exhaust flow, that would solve some of the stove shortcomings. Perhaps raise the overall stove height 1 inch along with raising the floor height a quarter inch higher along with increasing the bottom sidewall opening's sizes would solve many of the cons while yet retaining much of the pros of the new model. Hopefully my description makes sense.

Thanks for sharing; very interesting, helpful and stimulating, as well as enjoyable.
Make + stand from stainless steel rule will provide the top gap for venting and stop it smoking.
An alternative base plate, mesh square or mesh grill, with more holes may work for pellets.
Conversely on the old model close off some of the base holes for a slower damped down burn.
Again look for a mesh to accommodate pellet burning.
I am sure you have considered these options.
    Thanks again Colin

Seems it would be easier to adapt the old version for wood pellets and charcoal, and better for fast boils (which is what most of us probably use a stove for).

The design of the new version is counter productive to minimising smoke.
What actually burns are the gases released from the wood when heated.
To reduce the amount of smoke, load all the wood and start the fire from the top of the pile, and if possible, feed wood into the bottom of the fire so that the gases released from the added wood will combust as they rise through the fire.
Doing this will also make the fire burn hotter.

As an example, in this video, the fire is smokeless until wood chips are added. I think it would have been better to add all the kindling before lighting if the aim is less smoke and a hotter fire.

I like that the feed hole is a bit higher than the old version and I like that with just a couple skewers or tent pegs you can run an alcohol stove in it. I always carry an alcohol stove with me as a backup just in case the wood where I’m at isn’t dry enough to get my little Ohuhu wood stove going. Don’t get me wrong I like the older version too but that slower burn would be great for cooking over. Thanks for sharing Mark!

I have the older one, a Lixada knock-off that I got due to your reviews all that time ago. Fantastic for boiling water which is what I only ever use it for, coffee, hot chocolate, instant noodles. It's so ferocious I've lit it in storm conditions and got it to work with wet twigs. My god that was a miserable experience that I loved to bits.

I am so glad you did this thorough review Mark!! I have several versions of the old Uberleben and have put off purchase of the new one mostly because of the alcohol stove incompatibility of the old stove. I actually did drill holes in one of my old models and use tent stakes to elevate the alcohol burner. This looks like a super redesign!! I sure would like a titanium……. time will tell but I sure do like the looks of the color versions they now have. I have a black version they pulled from previous production because of peeling issues and refunded customers that purchased it. Looks like they nailed it this time!!! Jeff

Appreciate the honest, comprehensive review and comparison of the two versions of the stove!
While I don't own either, and don't really have plans to purchase either, for me it seems like the original version may actually be a little more versatile in many circumstances than the newer version - with one big exception! It's always possible to cut down on too much airflow with some minor tweaks and mods, but increasing airflow is a lot more difficult, so the older version would seem to be more useful in a lot of circumstances - as long as you're not wanting to use an alcohol burner (i.e., Trangia or knockoff) in it. There the newer version with it's side holes seems like it would be much more ideal solution. The two stoves seem to have very different desired outcomes (older=fast, hot burn, newer=slower, cooler burn for cooking), and for the most part reach those outcomes pretty well, it just means the user needs to know how they plan on using the stove before making a purchase.
    Thanks for another great video!

Haven’t been able to comment or watch your videos for some time. I apologize for that. Been trying to find a place to live!!!!! About the ideals for the new stove also helps with being a fire box in emergency situations. Just having a fire box can provide some potential heat in keeping warm and not going thru so much wood. In that situation. It allows for a slower controlled burn when you just use coals. Not just for grilling food but more on the simmering side of cooking in a pot or pan. You shouldn’t have to remove the pan from heat coals frequently. So don’t take it as a disadvantage 😉 with more experimentation you can probably simmer longer with low heat.., like cooking with a Dutch oven on open coals. You’re one of the best in your field. I have the upmost confidence in your ability to find a way to master that stove as you have done with others. My mind still looks at it for survival and recreation. Mainly the recreation portion. But those type of stoves are being sold as survival stoves in bug out bags. (The concept still irks me) because no ONE PERSON can get it correctly done. Just have to wait and see what happens if that time comes on which gear to choose. Still my go to man on reviews.

I believe the reason for the smoke on the new stove is, you may have overloaded wood in the stove. If you want a hotter fire on the new stove, you could use a softer wood. I like basswood because it burns cleaner for me. I also like to start my fires with smaller wood to get a quicker start.

What actually burns are the gases released from the wood when heated.
To reduce smoke, you should load all the wood before lighting, and crucially, light at the top of the pile to ensure as much gas as possible is combusted. This method will also make the fire burn hotter.

Thanks for this video Mark. I'm not a big fan of the flat plate slotted wood stoves mostly because they are so "fiddley" to put together but these stoves seem to avoid the struggle. They (or someone else) must have franchised the branding because I bought one of these in Australia with a totally different name on it but it’s identical to the old version except mine is titanium. I wouldn’t have even bought one unless it was so light. Mine is 200g whatever that is in oz. I have no problem boiling water as fast as a gas bottle (about 2 min give or take) or setting it down low for a slow cook. The secret to low power is a larger diameter stick or wood. There is a plethora of wire grills you can get from various camp stores. I haven’t got one but I’ve seen a double sided “toast” handled holder which would be easy to flip with a steak or bread or anything kinda flat so I don’t think the new version is an improvement. Very happy with the performance of the original

Mark, your friend Steve recently tried using wood pellets soaked in methyl hydrate in a ventilated tuna can within an Ohuhu stove. He really soaked the pellets. It seemed to work well leaving next to no ash. I think if you just pour a small amount on the top of the pellets when you arrive by the time you have everything else done you should be ready to light up get a good burn. You can then add dry pellets without fear of blow back. We do live in Nova Scotia and sometime it rains a lot. I am not prepared to use Steve Wallis' Flame throwers. :-)

    • @MarkYoungBushcraft
      @MarkYoungBushcraft  2 місяці тому

I have not played with Steve's innovation yet but likely will. Yes, you can add pellets to burning pellets as long as you do so slowing enough not to smother the flames. You could also add less than perfectly dry wood a little at a time. Thanks for commenting

Where as I usually set up shop and stay put. So I appreciate the more robust construction, slower burn and cooking versatility of the NEW. Btw; wouldn't an increase to it's exhaust area speed up the burn, thus hindering the design concept ?

@randyyeager : How can we be sure it's not actually the opposite? Chinese industries have a reputation for copying successful products, sometimes poorly, with design errors. While Uberleben certainly has its products manufactured under license in China, that doesn't necessarily mean the original design comes from there. Not all Chinese products should be dismissed. When a project leader takes the time to do things right, especially by adhering to Western licenses and specifications, it results in quality outcomes, in my humble opinion.
