As a beginner self taught 3D artist, you guys have been so helpful in not only providing valuable information, but in motivation as well, and I wanna thank you so much for that! Keep up the good work and stay awesome!
Thank you so much! This means a lot to us both! Best of luck to you in your 3D journey :) Feel free to update us as you progress; we'd love to see your work.
Blender has always had wireframes, But the new workbench render engine provides much better visualization for wireframes, hdr, x-ray, color rendering, all in fluent real time. Thats one goal of 2.8 is better visualization, like if you grab blender 2.79 and go into wireframe mode, it gets harder to read as your scene gets bigger and if you want to overlay wireframes you have to go into materials and its not just a easy click of a button like it is now.
Very true Alice! And you're right FlippedNormals about London on trees. Adding one more thing just not movie production, game production is also busy with tress and environment for Forza Horizon 2, 3 and motorsport 7.
I love these kind of videos! Just listening to all your voices in the background as I model and texture things is somewhat very calming and relaxing. NEVER stop doing these kind of videos please!
The anecdote about taking a painting course was spot on. "Look at all those colors, dude!" LOL I had the exact same experience, as I'm sure a lot of other people did, too. Can't speak to your experience today, but I've lost all that perception, except in a clinical way, such as using complementary colors for shadows.
Thank you so much for useful information about 3D. I have started my journey and i always watch your videos to take more inspiration and learn new things, You guyz are such an amazing
I love these long rant videos so much. So much useful information in them, I'm using them as background audio as I work now rather than music, as they're both motivational for me, and super informative! I really appreciate you guys taking the time to make this stuff, cheers!
Thank you so much for the videos guys!! You've been unbelievably helpful for me over the past few months As a suggestion, would you consider making a video on the basics of rigging a character in Maya? :)
3d coat has this, calculate dirt level per AO and dome light, thing, witch gives a realism beyond anything ive seen in automation of texturing. Its really good.
I think the main reason so people mainly gravitate towards Blender, and attempt so much through it, is simply because it's free. As someone who cannot find an easy way to transition between his old job and where he might go, Industry demands for expertise in software which requires investment on the order of £1000's is one of the main barriers. Second to that is still the apparent resistance of businesses to acknowledge/embrace/help the potential of independent learners. How many brilliant people are there out there who cannot afford, or are unwilling by sheer force of logic, to be indebted to the University system? How many truly would choose the more expensive route if they can learn most of the basics without it? In a world where creators are openly creating and sharing, and skills can be learned without an official stamp of approval, it does few people any favours if the academic and the business aspects of the equation cannot find ways to compliment one another, cooperating to fill in the blanks and explore the potential. I don't think it's an overstatement to say that such ignorance wastes potential and even ruins lives.
About the wireframes in Blender: someone might have been excited because the wireframes are properly working on 2.8, witch is in development (still in experimental state, not even alpha). 2.78 and previous versions had wireframes for years and years.
Im doing Game dev in 3ds Max, first year of learning. Great video! doing retop and having a blast thanks to you :P but i really wanna get into Maya, but ive started to get comfy in Max. But im really trying to learn above softwares so i can easly integrate. See some plugins and renders focus on 3Ds Max before Maya...thoughts bout evolution? but i think its weird autodesk made Max after Maya - any hidden hints?
38:00 I spent a good chunk of time trying to specialise in rigging, Idea at the time was it being more technically demanding = more opportunities for work, but I didnt like it and now Im trying to course correct with what I actually do like (3d modelling, Concept art and animation) but being from an area where the industry is small, its easy to get caught between a rock and a hard palce on wether to specialise or be a generalist.
the development build of blender 2.8 had wireframes taken out of it for some rework, and now they're back as an overlay, instead of the previous way of viewing it which was an entire mode called wireframe mode people were freaking out about not having wireframes in a DEVELOPMENT BUILD so he made the video to comfort said people
I guess the blender guy who was hyped about wireframes was talking about the 2.8 release which is not even in the beta atm and for a time they had removed wireframes completely to rework some stuff for it and give it more options and now it's back in the currently developed build again. Of course does the normal, offical version of blender have wireframes... cmon guys ._.
It was because of that, and because they made it cleaner. Not only wireframe, but wireframe with texture or wireframe with changed opacity and size of the lines for better visibility.
No no no xDDDD about the wireframe in blender it obviously was here the whole time since the begining, but its going through improvements now in 2.8 (like other big as well as small features of blender), and its getting couple "sweets" like for example there is a random color display in viewport (your probobly know from z-brush, when meshes get random colors in display panel, to see them clear) and its also visible in blender's wireframe! Its like wireframe and about 0.2 alpha chanel value of those colors so you see like it would be a color of volume (of course you can toggle it on and off xD). And also couple other things. But yeah regardless of that I would like to thank you guys for all your work, and advices. Its cool to have experienced people talking about their way, to help others get a nice start! Don't stop! Stay awesome!
Thanks you two! Learning all the time here and it will never stop. You have awaken me by saying the importance of basic fundamentals. Holidays are coming and I like to give my eyes also a -off the screen- holiday :-) so do you have a tip or recommendation for some books I can pick up and read when I will be on the beach, zipping some drinks. . . :-) thanks and continue your great YT- channel! Greetings from the Netherlands Jeroen Helmer
Maya and Max are probably the best packages to learn. And I would lean more to Maya, they are HUB packages. Meaning that no matter what other software you know/use, your work is going to wind up being inserted to Maya or Max, and Maya has the most used animation tools.
They had to remove the wireframe renderer because they removed some old parts like blender render or BGE and they added it back again. He was so excited, because it wasn't in there for a month.
If you guys have the time, I'd like you to try Cinema 4D so that after you can master it I can learn from you and so you can also try motion graphics. I'd love it if you did that
Hey guys.. I asked an experienced 3d artist I know whether doing a mentored Maya and production pipeline course could get me a job in gaming. He said 'not really'.. I'm a concept artist and am familiar with painting and drawing fundamentals, so I figured that would make my models better from the knowledge.
Small notes: (1) Are complementary shadows not also influenced by reflected light? (2) Modo hate! LOL At least you explained. ;) (3) Interesting that the Lightwave guys went on to create Modo...which looks like someone was out to fix things they hated about Maya. (4)Three cheers for being software agnostic!
Haha! I started using Houdini as my main software last year. Did use 3DS Max earlier, but it got really serious once I started using Houdini. BTW do you have any recommendations for where I should learn more about lighting, composition and color?
Yo Mike! Yup, I still use MODO, just less these days. It's a fantastic tool, it's just that it was a bit of a hassle to switch between MODO and Maya in a production :)
Blender 2.8 is commng out with an Easier way to see wireframes.. When you modl in Blender and use Wireframes with LOTS of Faces, It's REALLY hard to see, So- I'm guessing.. I know it's supposed to be easier to see, But Maybe easier to use- I didn't get it that much, But I yeah Wire frames in Blender Suck, And I started with the Demo Of Metasequoia. So an Improvement sounds great.
I come from a background in oil painting and got into 3d because I wanted to render/paint things that don't exist! I even know how to sew in real life--LOL. Ten likes for your advice!
The way I learnt about shape language was trying to make an environment and character using only basic shapes, like boxes, spheres and triangles, where I tried to get as much across as I could with as few shapes as possible. You'll then learn about how to really simplify your designs into the bare minimum you need. For light and color, I highly recommend James Gurney's book on the topic: www.amazon.com/Color-Light-Realist-Painter-Gurney/dp/0740797719 /Henning
I disagree with only mastering one single tool. I think you should expand that to master one workflow. Find the pipeline that best suites you and that you are most comfortable with. I use Maya, Zbrush, and Substance on my 3d models and I learned them all pretty much at the same time. Also you are false to say Zbrush cannot be used for low poly modeling......Check out Michael Pavlovich and you will see, he never touches maya during the modeling stage and he is a pro. Also zremesher is not the only retopo tool in the program there is also regular retoplogizing built in using zspheres.
it's true XD zbrush is stupid , baked stuff with hard normals will shows polygon on normals map XD and even there are no smoth normal or i miss something and other thing flip uv why just why or the ui :( it's sad but i love the feel when i sculpt in zbrush i tried other sculpt software but zbrush it's deffrent feelings idk maybe just me
Nice nice video guys! For all the people in the comments let me share a little bit of my art path. Before I start working into a studio I was lucky enough to have sort of crash course of art fundamentals and man! That course save my art, I start without knowing a thing about illustration and same as composition or lightning, but after spending 2 months all my art vision was changed, it was like taking the red pill and get out of my comfort zone and after that we have a level up presentation where we show our before and after pics (link to the result here: www.artstation.com/artwork/6N18w) Ill recommend to all the beginners to take this kind of workshops if you have the opportunity. Next the stuff about blender: People is hype because blender view port can show the wire frame but for make it more faster we are only seeing some weird incomplete wireframe by default and is not wireframe / shaded so we need to work around and make our own wire frame shaded settings to see that over the viewport instead of the cool new features that has this upgrade. Hope I dont get banned for the Autodesk club to by posting this stuff Cheers.
You shouldn't. Blender is free and does 98% of what Maya does and honestly is way faster and has some tools that are better than Maya. The reason why Maya is recommended is due to it being used for so many years in the industry and it's really hard to switch hundreds of people, if not thousands to another tool. Kinda chicken and egg. If you are a just learning there is zero point to pay for software that is almost identical. Ofc there are some slight differences and if you switch to Maya you will have to learn UI and shortcuts, but again, working with any tech field you need to have drive to learn new software. As they mentioned it might be that Houdini will be standard and not Maya later on and so on.
What happend to the love of stylized characters? All I ever see in the western side of the world is just go for photo realism. While on the Eastern side plenty of creations are unique and stylized. I still think as a 3D artist that things should be done in a very unique manner rather then riding the band wagon for realism. But don't get me wrong I understand the message here learning the fundamentals of 3D to make yourself improve as a 3D Artist. But I really feel like these fundamentals are just put to mostly photo realism rather then abstract and unique pieces. I am mainly targeting the video game industry.

Blender 6 years ago when I first used it had wireframe. Its just got better

@@FlippedNormals 1.8 only had wireframes and no undo...

Very nice video, for that blender wire frames: There is wireframe in Blender 2.79 but it was refined in Blender 2.8.

Blender has had wireframe. He was just excited about the implementation of it to the 2.8 [beta] version, which is still in development.
Awesome video guys! Great information. Big thanks.
Great video. The software praising in this industry gets so tiring, thanks for poking fun at it :p

With a third one coming tomorrow! :O
29:10 - The name of the person you are looking for is HABERDASHER. He is a maker of men's suits.
What do you think is a good way to learn these principles like color and shape?
The way I learnt about shape language was trying to make an environment and character using only basic shapes, like boxes, spheres and triangles, where I tried to get as much across as I could with as few shapes as possible. You'll then learn about how to really simplify your designs into the bare minimum you need.
For light and color, I highly recommend James Gurney's book on the topic:
