    I have a blind cat and she can do anything that a cat can do but see. She chases and fetches paper balls, her favorite, and loves her ping pong ball in the bathtub. She is my hero.

      Our cat just lost her sight from a stroke and is having a tough time navigating. It’s hard for her and us. I wonder how long it will take for her to get around without bumping her poor little head?

      @@valeriegallagher8366 I think that cats that became blind when they were born or since they were a kitten navigate better because they are used to using all of their senses other than vision to navigate. It should take a while for your cat to get used to navigating without vision, maybe around a year or so. You cat probably just isn't used to it.

      I've had a couple of totally blind cats in my time. Your little one will be just fine. 😊
      Cats don't rely on their eyesight as much as humans do, so while for us blindness is really daunting (our world is designed around being able to see), for cats, they're more reliant on touch, hearing (they have a broader range than dogs!) smell and proprioception.

      Hello, after so long (your comment is a year old) how is your cat doing? I adopted a kitten and is blind (both eyes removed after severe worms), I'm afraid I won't be able to handle it.

    cleopatra is amazing. and your living room looks beautiful! love the decor. as a cat mum to a blind persian cat the amount of chairs made me a bit uncomfortable though :D my cat gets around the apartment perfectly, the only difficulties are chairs since they sometimes are in a slightly different position or angle and he cannot detect the chair legs as easily as a long sofa for example that has a larger surface. i should commit to the sitting cushion life style.

    My almost 18 yrs young Meggy, lost a lot of her eyesight at the turn of this year and was diagnosed with high blood pressure and kidney failure. She's stable now, but her eyesight hasn't returned...and now we are facing a move to a new home in a month. I'm terrified she'll have trouble adapting but this video gave me hope! thank you for sharing!!

    If we look closely, most cats have 3 layers off fur. What's important here is the last layer is very sparse but often nearly twice as long as the next layer. Literally "whiskers" all over their body! These not only "touch" but can feel air currents as well.
    P.S. Love your captions.

    Maggie, my kitty has monocular vision, she does not jump high like other cats do, she is very cautious when getting down from a table, and she can't sense 'depth'. Her world is bi-dimentional. She chose me as her guardian human when I visited the shelter she was living in. I am not impressed by Cleo, meaning that I am well aware of what cats can do even with the saddest disabilities.....have a wonderful life, little big Cleo.....🐈

      I have a one eye cat and she can tell depth and if she wants to jump from things or not. I'm not exactly sure how but somehow her brain has adapted. She was like that from a kitten. Did your cat lose an eye later in life?

    I have a blind cat also. I see we acclimated them to the house pretty much the same way! I never did it for him but I did scratch and tap my fingers on things so that he'd know they were there. Your cat does the same thing mine does! Uses his paws to test for edges, most of the time he sniffs loudly and does a kind of bat sonar things as the sound comes back to his ears he'll know that a wall or something large is coming up. The rungs on the bottoms of chairs have been more difficult, not much for the sniffing sonar to bounce off of. I found my little boy when he was 5 weeks old and nearly frozen to death. My sighted cat helped me teach the blind one. He is very protective of his little brother.

  • @thejestor9378
    @thejestor9378 4 роки тому +2

    So weird thing about cats, all species of cats have a fairly inconvenient blind spot, this blind spot is basically a zone directly in front of their face where they cannot see a thing, so they instead use their whiskers to confirm what is in front of them. Yes this does mean that when a cat pounces, it is making a blind attack, and they are relying on their whiskers to confirm that they got what they did. Now if this one’s whiskers are bit worn out, she may be using a mixture of smell, sound, and touch to map out her surroundings.

    How interesting. Im watching because our cat is losing her sight. Its been happening gradually, but steadily declining. She’s a nervous wreck. What’s really interesting to me, is that Cleopatra is having FAR less trouble navigating a new room, than our cat is having getting around the place with a bit of sight. I think I understand. I think that my cat seeing things looming at her suddenly and catching half-sight of things all the time, is exhausting her. It’s like constant: “Boo !”. She really is suffering. Its her emotional state were really worried about. Her eyes are getting worse, but i think i now would prefer she go blind. Then just we would not change the furniture around. We are already doing this. -I put no new things around the house. Watching Cleopatra be so much more confident than my half -seeing cat, i will put it to the vet at next week’s visit, that - if nothing can be done to help our Africa’s sight, then we hasten the process with operations to stop her seeing…. Rather than torture her slowly when the end outcome seems to be blindness anyhow. Thank you so much for this. So surprising

    • @daigriffiths399
      @daigriffiths399 Рік тому +1

      You've probably made the decision by now and also discovered something you never expected: you don't have keep everything in the same place all the time. My eldest cat lost his eyes to glaucoma some 3 - 4 years ago - it was one of the saddest decisions I've had to take, but I knew he was already blind before the operation and in a LOT of pain. Once the wounds had healed, life went back to normal. He still goes out for his daily circuit (everybody around us and most of the visitors know about the blind cat) and very rarely bumps into anything, even if it has unexpectedly 'appeared' right where he wants to go. Follow him and you wouldn't believe he was blind, except for a slight hesitation at times. If I see his uncertainty, he will use my voice to guide himself in the 'right' direction. I talk to him and as I change position to guide him, he immediately turns onto the new heading. What you see here in Cleo is exactly how our cat behaves.
      Cats are a walking scent factory. The obvious ones are the head glands where they head-butt you. They also have scent glands in their backsides and their feet. The whole house is full of markers to tell the cat where he/she is and which way to go to arrive at the next sign (scent!) post.

      @@daigriffiths399 Thanks heaps for replying. No I actually haven’t decided not to keep everything in the same place . I thought we’d have to do that forever. And i kinda dread it because i am actually the new neighbor of the lady who actually owns the pussycat. (But the cat has both of our properties as hers (you know how cats are, lol, and we don’t have a dividing fence: not that i mind, I adore the cats). Im very pleased to accommodate her because i lost my sweetheart buddy of nearly 20 years just recently. But I’m just moving in, and will be setting up my house and yards, and id hoped to rearrange things quite a few times as I work out how I’d like my new home. She is doing better, her nerves are settling a bit. Being almost blind sent her more crazy because she was jumping all the time at shadows and was still trying to navigate by sight. Now she’s fully blind, she’s stopping using a faulty sight faculty, and is teaching herself to use scent, whiskers and her dear little feet. It’s divine and hilarious to watch her flap her feet out in front like a duck to locate the beginning of the porch step. But i still thought id have to move nothing. She still runs into things if startled, if she just takes off without care. We try not to startle her, because she has really hurt herself. Like yourself, i talk to her in the yard, giving her direction to follow . Works a treat. I also just talk full stop whenever I go out into the yard if she’s out, because she does indeed run into me as I’m an unexpected obstacle . Your cat is 3 years into blindness. Our Africa- (that’s her name)- is only recently blind. You are saying i may not have to keep every bloody thing in the exact same place in the future- that’s good news. Thanks. One query though- you know how you spoke of their great scent abilities? Well i know that but with rocks, poles and stuff like that, she isn’t picking those up, (unlike the smelly people, plants, etc, they dint put out much smell). Im evolving my awareness along with her, and this is actually a bit exciting and making me use my brain. Ive thought of adding smells to certain inanimate objects which have little scent of their own- smearing some water resistant pawpaw cream on them and the like). Also, another person in youtube described how they’ve put little bells on certain things, like sheds, chairs etc, that trigger as you approach. (Just for the early days, until the animal completely mentally maps the perimeters of the permanent structures, and our Africa is at that stage). Again, I really appreciate you writing back. And, perhaps, the future will be a bit more relaxed than we thought. Cheers mate

      @daigriffiths399 Рік тому

      @@susanmcdonald-timms3202 Ah - I wouldn't put any strong scents anywhere. Let Africa lay down her own trails and markers to follow. You will see that in some places she may take what looks to be an odd wobbly path across an open area; this just happens to be the first trail she took when crossing it. Each time she uses that area, she will reinforce the scent trail. The good news about that is cat scent is so strong that washing the floor rarely completely cleans it away. Smell her just after she's washed herself and her fur is still damp; that's what they smell a thousand thousand times magnified.
      The ground underfoot is another clue marker for them. I've watched our Gypsy crossing the road and arriving at our driveway. If he doesn't arrive at precisely the right spot as indicated by what he is walking on (asphalt, grass, gravel), he will cast around until he finds it and then picks up his direction again. Unfortunately you'll never get around the the startle-crash behaviour. It's just the way it is.
      Most animals are smart in their own way but as hunters, the cat family takes it to a whole new level.
