Imagine how terrifying it would be to live in a world with no knowledge of germs or the science behind disease. Imagine having no idea why you have suddenly come down with a potentially life threatening condition, and having very little idea of what to do about it. Obviously there were doctors and such in the past, but true understanding of the causes and cures for illness are so comparatively recent. No wonder so many cultures believed in curses and evil spirits. How else could you explain something like that?
Good point 👍
Yet with all the medical advances humans have made, and all the healthcare information easily available at our fingertips via the internet, anti-vaxers are still a thing 🙄

Indeed.
All those poor women, why did they always think it was women’s fault, that if people got sick it was their fault, that if women where smart or sick themselves they where witches or vampires.
Some dude in the replies to this comment seems to think that I’m wrong lmao
THATS JUST WHAT A WITCH WOULD SAY
That's misogyny for ya
Women were viewed as typically prone to evil and licentious behaviour. They were viewed as temptresses, vessels for sin or malignant entities in the lives of men. Back then if "supernatural" occurrences were abound then usually women were blamed because Biblical precedent implied they were cohorts with the devil without a husband's guidance.
...It's not great today in New England but at least they're not saying women are willing tools of the devil unless you treat 'em mean xD

A couple things to add from an Exeter RI native,
There’s a different version of what happened with mercy browns heart, some think her heart was buried underneath the rock and not burned but some believe it was burned and buried beneath the rock. There’s also a tomb near her grave which is said to be haunted by her spirit. There is a tiny hole near the top of the rock tomb of which you can look through but personally I couldn’t see anything inside even with a flashlight. It’s also said that one of the house right across the street is haunted to the point of multiple people moving out bc of the supernatural happenings there and possibly even a murder. There are more stories that I can’t think of at the time, but I can say me and my buddy “double dated” these girls at this location and it ended v happily for the both of us, so thank you mercy brown for not murking us while we were there.
If that's unsolved fact. You might suggest that to the ghoul boys, to visit for the next season of supernatural after this pandemic is totally over.
I drive by her grave everyday
I used to live just down the road from her grave, maybe a quarter mile at most. As soon as I moved into that house, I started losing weight for no apparent reason. In the year and a half that I lived there, I went from 155 pounds down to nearly 115. Very skinny for an otherwise healthy 31 year old man. Despite several doctor’s visits, an endoscopy, and a CT scan, nobody could find a cause for the weight loss. As soon as I moved, I immediately started gaining weight, and within 6 months I was back to a healthy weight again.
A couple of years before I moved in, a little girl died in her sleep from a brain hemmorage in that house. Something else tragic happened while I lived there, but it’s too painful for me to talk about.
@@CJWilcox109 Jesus glad you’re okay now bro, it’s stories like yours that give me the heebie jeebies every time I go by there, I used to drive by everyday going to my HS but I can only imagine living near there.
Well, at least you gave her an interesting little sight for a minute
Imagine, not only are you sick, feeling bad for losing people you love, but the village not only digs up one of them! But will also force you to eat the ashes!

Vampire panic: exists
Garlic: it's my time to shine
Doctors then: "You have demons in your blood, do cocaine about it."
I live in RI and have visited Mercy's grave (it is in Exeter, RI). There really is a metal band- its at the bottom, kind of securing it to its base so it can't be knocked over and then stolen. There were gifts left when I went there (no teeth or cough drops): there were silk flowers, coins, stones as markers of visitors and a small bible left open to a specific passage.
I've been there too, i also heard there where 3 unmarked graves on the outside of the graveyard, tied to mercy brown, but i dont know if its true
When I went, I was told that there's like this shed tomb thing on the side of the cemetery, and that's where Mercy's body is. The townspeople wanted to lock her body up as securely as possible so she couldn't do any vampiric harm.
@Summer Murray there is a crypt there (looks like a shed), but these were only used to house the bodies in the winter when the ground was too frozen to dig the grave. Once the ground thawed, they buried the bodies like normal
@@Sirenhalo I didn't know that was the reason! Thank you for clarifying that. Makes way more sense 😂
Why cough drops tho?

Also as a person from New England no one really believes in it anymore it's more of Halloween folklore/fun amusement attractions well at least the attractions before covid not a ton of them are open as far as I know because a lot is like small pop up type stuff in small areas and you have to socially distance and stuff like the focus is mostly witches and vampires unless you go to like a scary maze or haunted house things it all depends on the themes and stuff that company is doing that year 🤷♀️ hope that helps!😁
please tell me this is gonna be a series

It is. It’s called haunted history
If buzzfeed hasn’t already, you should do a history of rabies, truly fascinating and hydrophobia is a real thing
Now that is scary. I saw a video of a rabies ward and it was one of the worst things I have ever seen. There is literally nothing you can do for those people once they get to that point.
Probably Edward Cullen before seeing bella
I think it's really cool that they delved into this because at least among the people I've spoken to it's not a very well known event. One thing to note is that for the most part back then witches and vampires went pretty hand in hand. They were often thought to be witches in life which gave them the ability to come back after death. One of the biggest spikes in interest about the new England vampire panic was caused by a couple of kids. They were out playing and they found a skull. After some digging was done a body was found with the bones in a sort of "jolly roger" formation with the thigh bones crossed over the chest and the head decapitated. This was how that specific area though they could stop the vampire. One of the craziest things to me is that it wasn't exactly a secret what was going on but nobody really went to stop it. There was one newspaper article from the south that basically called them wackadoos for thinking it was mystical. It's all in all a super interesting topic that deserves being looked into further! Im honestly a little fuzzy on some of the finer details because it's been ages since I researched it but hopefully I didn't mess any of it up!
I love learning about this sort of stuff it’s so fascinating how people used to think (and still think) history is one of my favourite subjects it’s so interesting and really makes you intune with society !!

Agreed
They were probably hunted down, stabbed multiple times with stakes, and if that didn’t kill them they buried them alive. Can you imagine the screams? :(
This is the stuff that probably inspired someone to make a story about Abraham Lincoln hunting vampires.
Another reason I'm in this channel apart of the Ghoul Boys is this narrator. I just love his voice and narration...♡
I did a project on this for English. I assumed there was just a vampire panic in Europe because of the plague and I found these cases really surprising.

can’t do a video on the history of vampires without mentioning Mercy Brown. I live about 10 minutes from her grave, her story is so sad to me. People do visit leave gifts at her grave especially near Halloween. When I visited last there was a stuffed toy, cards and notes, flowers, etc. From the version of the story I heard her father did not believe she was a vampire and did not want to exhume her body/remove her organs but was basically forced to agree by neighbors.
woah what else bites and sucks blood

The ending makes a good point. It's important to remember that one day the 21st Century will be considered a dark, primitive era.
And hundred years from now they will look back and say about current medicine; "They used dangerous drugs with multiple side effects(even killed people) that didn't cure illnesses, they used radiation therapy to treat cancer with low success rates, they diagnosed gifted children as 'autistic' and disabled."
