Just got the “blood orange” lifetime warranty, rebuildable PNW loam pedals. Every scratch on aluminum pedals is a badge of honor. Looking forward to watching them get all their many trail scars over time.
Hard not to like what PNW is bringing to mountain biking, quality products, lifetime warranty and a reasonable price. I'm currently using Catalyst pedals by Pedaling Innovations, I may give these a try when it is time to replace them.

This is my second post. Received my PNW Loam pedals today. As I said I put them on my truative descendant carbon cranks with boots and they fit perfect. I happen to like that they spin very freely. I also have the oneup aluminum pedals on my ebike and even though they are very smooth they don’t even spin one time around. The pnw feel exactly like the oneup but spin way better. My oneup are almost new but I will take them apart put a lighter grease in and if I can’t get them to spin any better they will be sold and I will get another set of PNW loam. I think PNW did an amazing job on the pedals and the price is just right.
Great review as always. I like the look of these pedals had I known about them I would have considered them, but just got new ones. Maybe next year. Oh yes the test model bike in the background very nice 😝
I did a hunt over the past year searching for the ultimate flat pedal. I won’t list all that i experimented with, but I will say That Kona Wah Wah II and Race Face Atlas tied for first place. Fwiw i have a size 13 shoe. I rode the composite wah wah’s this past year and noticed one was cracked but no clue how long it had been cracked. For those unaware, Race Face has just launched a new rendition of the Atlas that has remedied reliabillity issues. I will buy aluminum wah wah’s next or possibly the new atlas pedals. Im actually surprised the wah wah’s don’t get more praise… being one of the wider pedals out there makes them stand out from the crowd
Another great review! I love PNW's new XL Loam grip, but these aren't on my radar. I only use flats and had been using 1Up aluminum for a couple of years and 'thought' I was happy, until the upgrade bug bit me and I tried the Tenet Occults..... Holy cow, the Occults are the best feeling flat pedal I have ever used. Both in terms of grip and feel under foot. Race Face sent me a new set of their Atlas pedals to try and while they are nice, they just aren't as grippy or comfortable as the Occults are, to me at least.... Maybe a little too concave? The Occults have a wider Q factor which I personal need than the 1Ups and my feet just seem to naturally fall perfectly on the pedal. Anyway, I hope you do a long term review of these PNWs!

I am just installed ONEUP aluminium version for my main setup... came from Shimano SPD clips and tried nukeproof plastic ones, e13 and Tioga plastic too. Well, the Tioga and Nukeproof very light, around 250per pair, maybe less, works fine. Same for E13 - just fine flat pedals.
with ONEUP was only 1 ride for now, and they are extremely tenacious compared to previous. Rotates - it is about no more that 1 turnover.
Seems that ONEUP is one of the best choices.

I was just about to buy them a couple of days ago. I have truative desendant carbon cranks which are basically sram and I know oneup can’t be used with sram carbon cranks and since these have the same big bearing as the oneup I was worried that the pedal will not work with carbon cranks with protective boot. I contacted PNW and they assured me that the pedal will work with the carbon cranks that have a boot. So chances are I will buy a set. Even though it’s a little heavier the price is very competitive at 99.00. I think this is first video of this pedal, Thanks,always great information from you.
@@LoveMTB I have the oneup on my ebike and a papal washer and still I had to take off crank boots. Did you try the pedals with crank boots ? With washer we’re they ok.
Tried concave pedals(Shimano GR500 which is the budget version of the Saint pedals). Never sat well with me. I've had the OneUp Aluminum pedals for closer to 2 years now, and I really like them. They have a flat platform which suits me well.
I have not tried convex, but my gut feeling tell me it will be no bueno. If something works, it works for a good reason so I'm sticking to flat profile.
I'm going for the one up in the future, love the shape and looks like both the aluminum and composite are around 100g less than pnw. Big fan of pnw but the shape is kinda odd. Love how both companies offer them in purple. I've got PDX D10 pedals right now and they're going on two years with zero issues.
Yeah I love OneUp's pedals a lot. They work great, have tons of grip, and are pretty cool looking honestly. Might pick up the PNW's sometime, but for me I'm still sticking with the OneUp's!
Those big bearings look interesting, but I agree, that they probably spin too easily.
I think I'll stick to the XLC Pd-M12 though. You can get them quite cheap, in a few different colors and they are light and thin with still pretty good grip.
On those I used 8mm pins on the outside and the stock 6mm ones in the middle.
At least with my Shimano shoes the Shimano flat pedals do provide slightly better grip, but they are also very thick, heavier and more expensive.
one up composite pedals are great using them for ages, great value for anyone looking for something for a bike. £40 I paid in uk
@@LoveMTB we don’t tend to see much PNW brand bike parts but one up is stocked by a few retailers here. Do look quality pedals though.
@@woduk same in Germany. PNW is pretty much impossible to get here, even though they make some very interesting products.
just got a set in Fruit Snacks color to go with my black/purple gravel bike build. I go between clipless and flats on my bikes.
I ride flats. Currently on OneUp Composites. It was strange changing to a convex profile at first, but now I actually prefer it. I bought a used DJ bike that came with Shimano DX flat pedals and the concave shape that I used to live so much felt terrible. Immediately replaced them with OneUp composites. I would have gone alloy (for colour reasons) but the pandemic made them unavailable.
@@LoveMTB Like most people the bottom of my foot is somewhat concave (with the arch and all).
Once I got used to how different a convex pedal felt (at first) I just found that my feet wrap around the pedal more - it's like they interface better. It took some getting used to, but now that I am used to it I actually prefer it.
And I have to say if you ride in shoes with really stiff soles maybe you wouldn't notice the benefits as much because the shoe probably doesn't bend as much to conform with the pedal?
Finally, if you are a diehard clipless rider and always ride with your feet in the exact same position, maybe you would not get the benefit as much. But as someone who has ridden flat pedals almost exclusively for 20 or so years I actively move my feet around on the pedals depending on what I am doing. If I am climbing I have the balls of my feet over the pedal axle. If I am descending or doing jumps/drops I slide my foot forward more so that the axle is closer to the middle of my arch. When I drop my heels and curl my toes the feeling of really gripping a convex pedal is enhanced.
I actually ride Funn one side clipless. Gives the best of both worlds. Are they the best pedals? No. No. But they work for gnarly flat pedal sections and a quick turn and clip in for climbing. Set at the easiest tension, they hold very well and you can clip out very quickly. I settled on these for the variety of terrain I find on my locals. No mountains here for extended downhills, it's rolling, rocky, roots and clay. Full on clipless can easily get you in trouble and flats leave pedaling efficiency in the ditch. I wish more companies made this option.

Hi. Thanks for the review. I would be interested in maintainability. What does a lifetime warranty mean? Are the gonna provide a free bearing replacement or do I have to send pedals back to the manufacturer? Does bearing covered at all? If not, are there replacement kits available? What kind of bearing is inside? And so on. I would also like to hear about your real experience. Thanks.
I go through pedals every other month or so on average. This year I went through saints, looks (rubber), one ups, diety, and no name composite. The Dietys lasted the longest but the looks were a close second. The rubber on top held together after hundreds of miles of Utah abuse. I've noticed that bearing contamination is the main issue when talking about longevity. I'm interested if PMW would actually honor that lifetime warranty? I'm also worried about the convex shape. From past experience it hurts my foot after a while.
@@LoveMTB I love my pnw dropper. No issues at all in 3 years and that's with a brooks b67 saddle and often a 0 bag and a pad strapped to it. If the pedals are built that well then for sure I will buy a pair or 2. Cyclingdeal flats, crankbros (with the bear that sticks out), chesters all were convex. Maybe they were older models, idk? I typically only buy pedals that are as flat as possible. After a few hours or more of pedaling I noticed numbness in my toes. It has worked for me.
OneUp composite pedals, in dayglo orange. Light, cheap, solid platform. What's not to like? The PNW looks nice too, and the price is very good for aluminum.

I've waited for a while for PNW to produce other products like these pedals. However, I'm disappointed in that they don't have them in cement gray to match my other PNW parts.
I’ve got these, haven’t got to use them much yet though. They spin quite freely, would be my only gripe so far.

I'm a composite convert, don't think I'll go back to alu, they look better (no scratches visible) and are much cheaper, the stack height is a disadvantage, but I'm not sure how much difference 3mm make.
Concave pedals for sure, and imo pins like those are better as opposed to the ones similar on saint, doesn't matter if knurled or smooth, but they have to be thin.
@@LoveMTB shorter pins with concave body definitely preferred, but most companies seem to be going the convex direction with high pins, I guess because it's easier to make a pedal light this way. That's why I like my chester style of pedal, plus it fits my smallish feet well.

Hello so I’ve spent some time on the composites on an enduro bike. Though they to provide a large platform I’don’t like the let’s say more convex feel to them. The oneup’s have a more flat or concave feel to them that I prefer. They are both great cinsidering price. The one up seems to be more grippy and I have an 8.5 US so they provide enough of a platform for me. I’m going with the AL version of the oneups for my next build.

I had a pair of these PNW pedals on my Trek Slash 8. They are very grippy. The problem i always had is the just never felt right. I could never get my 5.10's in a good spot for support and power. Then I saw the problem. The outer edges of the pedals front to rear aren't parallel. So instead of supporting your foot evenly across the bottom its at an angle. I, for one, couldn't get comfortable. I got some Crank Bros Stamp 3's. Much more to my liking. Not sure if I've seen pedals where the edges aren't parallel except these? Design flaw in my opinion.
If you want cheap and good pedals that are plastic, take a look at the DMR V11. Not as grippy, as CB Stamp 7, or Oneup alu, but they're great, especially considering the price.
@@LoveMTB You won't notice the weight, when riding. Maybe more important in XC, but why'd you put pedals like that on an XC-bike in the first place?
@@LoveMTB Yeah, I know, all good. Just saying. I just care about strength more, and I've done some pretty nasty drops to flat and that sort of stuff on them, and no signs of breaking.

i ride the stamp 1 pedals, nothing fancy. but i need a little bigger sized because i am bigfoot.
but the pins are just a big weird. usually i just buy m5 screws to replace any wrong length pins. with this pedal you can replace em because they are not threaded.
too bad the price and shipping to EU is not attractive to me.
the design alone would get 8/10. 4/10 overall from me here.
Been riding these for several months now...I've had a few, what I consider minor pedal strikes that sheared multiple pins off.
Seems to be a weak point of the pin design, by having the drive feature as deep as it is, the solid pin portion isn't supported by enough threads on the pedal, making them really susceptible to breaking off and potentially damaging the threads on the pedal in the process. So much so that I had to clean up the threads with a tap after removing the broken pins.
I've hammered my Atlas, and zero pin issues. I had high hopes for the PNW, but the free spin and weak pin design is a killer.
@@LoveMTB that said, I have had a few back and forth emails with PNW, they've been super responsive. Their position is that they are designed to fail and that they'd rather break a pin than bend it. Seeing as the pins go in and come out on the same side, a bent pin would be a pretty moot concern, say compared to the more traditional thru pins. Either way, they hooked me up with a rebuild kit which was super cool of them.
Haven't tried my crankbrothers stamp 7, but they are freshly installed and ready to go.
Flats ONLY! Almost never a good ideal to be attached to your bike in any kind of crash. As for the pedals, I would prefer they be a bit longer similar to Pedaling Innovations Catalyst pedals. I like the free spinning. IMHO, would make it easier to get back on the pedal because it would just turn with your foot.
Not a fan of the axle bearing bump.
Those OneUp composite pedals are my current favorite.
I'd be interested if they do make a composite version.

I like PNW, bought their bars and grips last year and was so happy with the product and buying experience that I emailed them to ask if they were considering doing pedals. But I wouldn't buy these, don't like the shape and disappointed they're not composite. Besides, my 7 year old Nukeproof Electrons just keep on going, so I can save the money.
Very informative video but PNW pedals don’t interest me just purely based off looks. I’ve used the last few generations of shimano pedals there bomb proof but lack the grip compared to some competitors. The new raceface pedals interest me and chromag dagga’s currently riding shimano second generation, dmr vaults and a pair of one up composites. Competition is very tight but price and warranty hard to beat with these PNW pedals. Cheers
Great review. I dunno. The PNW pedals look kinda strange yet too simple in appearance. OneUp aluminums are the best looking IMO.
@@LoveMTB Ended up getting a set of these Loam’s to try out on my other bike. On second thought I don’t mind them. The simple design matches my PNW dropper.
Good grip but not as sticky as OneUp alloys. But I still like them.

I don't really enjoy the convex shape. I have tried a lot of flat pedals and I keep coming back to Raceface Atlas. They are expensive yes, but also just the right shape, easy to maintain, superb quality and tough.
yeah i also have the Atlas, great pedals. i had some Canfield crampon pedals for a while which were convex, they destroyed about 3 sets of shoe souls over time. moved to the Atlas and my shoes have lasted way longer.
@@LoveMTB Bearings need to be serviced regularly on Atlas but are cheap (BB only) and there is no glide bearing destroying the axle. I guess PNW is also BB only but misses grease in the bearings thats why they spin so freely.
Bought these pedals a month ago to try on my new FS mtn bike. Only tested once so far and haven' t had a chance to ride further on my mtn bike due to weather in the area. But from the one ride, these seem comfortable and held my shoes well. These do spin way too easily. If that creates any problems for me, will just put my Chester pedals back on. These are my second pair of aluminum pedals I've owned with my past bikes. The first being DMR V8's that were just too heavy and I kept sliding off and hitting my shins with. I do really like my Chesters, but want to give these PNW's a try and am hoping they will do well.
100$ is a typical price for a good set of alu low profile pedals, not sure why you said they are aggressively priced, they are just not on the expensive side of the spectrum imo.
