I'm 14, and my dad owns an Aston martin rapide from 2010. It is truly the most incredible experience to be driven in and to enjoy with my family. I feel incredibly fortunate to experience my dad's dream car with him

I had a Shelby GT350 - and although my elementary school daughter acted like she didn’t care for it - she sure didn’t mind being dropped off at school in front of the boys in it

Awesome Tom, I remember when I was your age my father had a 1968 Ford Galaxie with a 390ci V8 and it was just the most mega thing to me when I was young even though it was a classic already then.
You'll remember that car, no matter what car you end up with as an adult 👍

What an inspiring chap! I don't have any children myself, but I did grow up with cars in a family with 4 children and it didn't stop my dad from getting cars that he loved, so in my case, we were folded into a '67 Daimler Sovereign or, when it was just the male half of the family, the MGB or MGBGT. Keep making memories like this, they'll tell their grandchildren about it when our cars will be flying on nuclear power.
This is precisely what I hope my children will be saying when they are grown up… had to pop to the shops this week and it was raining, I said let’s take the x5 but they started chanting “Aston, Aston!” So we took the DadB9 😂

Before buying the DadB9 I honestly worried I was being selfish and that I was the only one who would try to do such a thing 😂 since starting the channel I’ve had so many incredible DadCars legends contact me and tell their stories, many of which I’m now filming their current cars for the channel! Having a dad with Supercars growing up would have been the best thing ever! Sounds like you’ve been living the dream 👏 I applaud you!

@@dadcars yes I saw, it’s a good video! It’s worth seeing if you can drive a facelift car like mine, as some of the niggles you mentioned have been resolved in the later cars (and they sound even better!)

I recently bought a Ferrari 612 for all the same reasons this guy bought his DB9. A V12 Ferrari that can carry excited children (or 4 adults!)
I got a DB9 and I love it… it’s not worth much cos it’s done 133000 miles but full Aston history backs it up and I’ve done most of the expensive stuff myself (discs and pads, plugs and coils, abs module, wheel bearings, bushes etc etc) cos it’s REALLY EASY to work on!!! I’ll be subscribing to Bens channel too.
133000! That’s impressive! How many miles did you do? Goes to show how usable these cars are though! As long as they are maintained well, it’s the examples that are sold on to unknowing buyers with hidden issues that give them a bad rep.
@@dadcars I have done about 25000 miles in mine. I’ve done nearly all of the maintenance in that time.
We did the Rapide route, bought ours from Aston Martin Works and our 2 boys love it. I like it so much a Ferrari 612 joined it this year so we have the option of either for school runs or any other trips. Aston hugely practical, 612 less so but both big, n/a v12s which are immense. Dad motoring at its best..!

I kept my 2016 WRX STI here in Australia. I roll it out on a nice day and have the three kids seats in the back. They love it!
DB9 is still king. The recent models just don't hit the same.

Aston should have evolved the DB9 instead of making the db11. If I want a car that screams for attention I would rather drive a red ferrari than an aston martin db11. An aston should be subtle, minimalist and elegant like this db9 (but modernized of course).

I agree.. a good example of what you’re talking about is the new Gran Turismo, I applaud Maserati for sticking with a perfect timeless design and not trying to make something that looks futuristic now at the cost of timeless beauty… good thing is these beautiful Astons are tremendous value for money so you can bag a classic and understated near perfect GT for reasonable money 🙌
Welp... I'm an old fart so anything that sets my nether regions a-tingling is good in my book, which is why I rather like the DB11. Mind you, anything with an Aston badge has the same effect... 😉

I have a people carrier and recently purchased an early Saab 9-5 to get my weekend petrol head fix, only 150 bhp - still enjoyable for a weekend drive.
A man I can relate to. 2012 and owner of a Z4 M Coupe. Child one turns up, panic sets in and I search for the fastest saloon I could find for the budget. Enter a 335i…which lasted 6 weeks before massive regret set in. I quickly sold and eventually bought a 1999 Z3M Coupe Breadvan (plenty of child detritus space in the back). Happy days and some great memories.

congratulations! and the GR86 will be a brilliant DadCar I'm sure... id love to get one on too verify the rear seats. They are one of the only recent JDM car I can think of that does it for me looks wise.
@@dadcars FWIW - not long ago @Micah Muzio did a "family review" of the gen2 ZD8 BRZ, which is the twin to the ZN8 GR86, and he tested it with his wife and six-year-old kid aboard. His kid was belted in at the back with a child seat installed, seated behind his wife. While cozy, it looked pretty usable.

Ben massive appreciation of your energy and enthusiasm. My son (21) and I have just embarked on MX5 ownership (James knows he is to blame as I bought the 30th Anniversary that he test drove) so we worry when it rains (leaks) 😂 but when the sun is out and the roof down we can convoy (he has the Mk3 and I have the Mk4) with the heated seats on and make wonderful memories - in summary sharing that passion never stops! I had similar problems when I had young kids, I didn't want a people carrier. In 2012 I got a manual 1986 E30 325i Sport convertible. It was a boat and did not handle but had great charm with its 6 cylinder burble, chrome trim and BBS wheels. I felt I had one foot out of the boring dad car trap.
that sounds like a fun example of an affordable DadCar, loads of cool German stuff for not much money and the older cars get better looking to my eye every day.
My dad drove a Ford Sierra 2.3D when I was a teenager. DB9 is way better. I like him already. Nice of you to give him a voice on your channel.

In the late 1970's when i was 12, my dad sold his Peugeot 504 to pursue his dream car; an MGB GT. However this was our only car and I had an 11 year old sister and 9 year old brother. You can imagine the he'll family holidays were, spending over 3 hours crammed in the back of the MG with my siblings was. My posture has never been the same since.

I bought a Vantage right afterI first became a father 13 years ago and still own her. Subsequently added two additional 2 seaters as a dad. The manual V wagon carts the kids. Lots of dads don’t give up!

Hit 71, and decided that I don't actually DO 'old with the need to potter about in a Honda Jazz auto, wearing beige elasticated trousers, and velcro fastening shoes, with a fluffy long eared dog hanging out of the window, so shot out and bought myself a quite ridiculous.....apparently, so I've been told....Focus RS. Luv it.

I had a Lotus Esprit GT3 all the time my kids were growing up. My extended family iniitially thought I was selfish and irresponsible, but the people that mattered (my kids and wife) were perfectly happy and always loved it and being part of the experience. I also had a DB9 briefly, and now wish I had just used it as a daily as the owner has above. It was an incredibly reliable and simple car for DIY maintenance, and it was built like a brick shithouse.
They are very refined aren’t they, not without little niggles but solid in all big aspects. An Esprit has always been a hero dream car for me… if I can have a 2 car garage one day with a 2 seater that would be a dream.

@@dadcars Again the GT3 is simple, reliable and very DIY friendly. I always figure if a car was built by human hands it can be repaired by them.Don't listen to all the BS from people who have never seen one never mind owned one. For a long time my GT3 was the only car in my garage that never showed a continuous engine management light! On the two or three occasions it did it was always a sticky float valve in the (Peugeot parts bin) expansion tank. Go figure.

He's doing it right. I always scratch my head when I read people say they've got a kid on the way so selling the sports car.
I bought a sensible family car when my first child came along - a Saab 9-3 wagon. It was a disaster, I basically bought a dog. What I learned was that a car seat went into the back of a Jaguarsport XJR-S without any hassle, and the Jag was far more dependable than the modern Saab. Like Ben I found there is a lot of pleasure to be had in taking the kids along with you. I still have the Jag (it has a pair of tiny shoes in the boot - my son's - they were put in there at the end of my wedding day, and have stayed there ever since for sentimental reasons) and also have a TVR Cerbera and a Mitsubishi GTO which can fit back passengers. With baby number 4 on the way I love having useable(ish) back seats as the kids love to come for a drive. I think it is as much of an occasion for them as it is for me. Sadly my oldest tells me he wants a Vauxhall Grandland X as his first car, we had one as a hire car and he loved it. I still have work to do there... 😁

@@dadcars I'm currently trying to persuade the gear box oil to stay on the gearbox rather than escape through the seams - will give you a shout when it's sorted if you like, see if we can arrange something.

I run 2 small kids around, plus the wife, in a 2016 Mustang GT - no problem (apart from worrying they’ll damage the interior!) Interested to hear what Ben thinks about slightly older kids eating, playing, drawing etc in the backs of these cars.
It was great to hear Ben's story! And I love you how got the exhaust note at the end in tune and time with the ending music.
Loved this, when our child was born we bought a boring saloon that lasted three months before we bought a Mazda MX6 we had for years. A great kids car, plenty of space in the back and easy to 'load' because of the big doors. Well she is all grown up now and a petrol head herself so good to start them young 😄

I regularly see this Toyota Celica from the mid 80s in my neighborhood, 2 door, very cramped at the back with 2 child seats in there. So obviously there are people who actually decide to put up with the inconvenience but to keep their car whatever it is regardless if expensive like this DB9 or cheap like the Celica
agree it doesn't matter if its a Celica or a rolls, if it gives you the fizz and you can make it work then bravo.

I 100% did exactly this. We had a V8 Vantage as the fun car when my son was born, so I swapped it for a DB9. It has rear seats, thus a practical family vehicle. Always had a bit of a chuckle parking it in the parent and child bays at Asda before pulling out the car seat.
I really like that you also support other people with your channel. I think that is a very nice trait of yours 💯

My mom, dad, brother and myself crammed into a 76 Corvette on many a trip into town for dinner.
Growing up riding in my dad's 55 Chevy Nomad sport wagon with sunroof and sidepipes, custom interior he built himself. He brought it to West Germany while in the Army. Back in the states, we'd alternate between the anemic Malibu, slow and safe, and sometimes we would take the Nomad- banging through the gears, on the Georgian equivalent of b roads, engine roaring! Dad was Jeckyl and Hyde when he happily fired up the Nomad. Forgot to mention he'd had it up to 140 on the autobahn.
I'll spare you the gory details about busted knuckles, turning wrenches, and holding flashlights ;)

I so much agree with the philosophy of driving interesting cars while the children are small. We drove everywhere in our Iceland modified Landcruiser 80 series. We even took it to Iceland! Now we were in need of a manual shift car, and ended up with the B7 Audi S4 with the NA V8. That means our youngest get to learn to drive a manual. Life is too short, mate. It really doesn't have to cost all that much!
Honestly I get just as excited about lower value cars that have character and buck the trend of “normal” DadCars

Compared to used Porsche prices these DB9’s seem an absolute bargain. I loved listening to Ben’s story as many of us car guys have had similar dilemmas.

You’ve hit on a key point there… side by side a similar value 911 while great at many things just isn’t as special or anywhere near as much of an event every time you drive it. Also how many 911s do you see on the road for every 1 Aston of any model? 😉 thanks for the kind words too my man 👏

Good luck with the UA-cam Chanel. I’ve tried for years to balance family needs (a big SUV) with the desire to have a real performance car as well.
James reviewed my car 2 1/2 years ago, a 2005 SLK 55AMG. I chose this specifically as an alternative to the Porsche sports car route. It’s good to go on the road less travelled.
Love Astons, there is something truly special about a large capacity naturally aspirated V12. I hope to own an Aston one day.

A friend of mine grew up in the back of a Saab 99. The 99 being a somewhat rare car in 1980s Germany, this was somewhat unusual, but in itself not to far out of the ordinary. This particular 99, however, happend to be a turbo, completely stripped out, no door panels, bucket seats in the front, and a roll cage. On weekends, his dad would race rallys, his mother would be the co-pilot. And during the week, the boy would be shuffled to kindergarten in a children' seat on the stock rear bench in what was otherwise a full-blown racecar. On all pictures of this car that I have seen the paint above the left rear light and on the left side of the trunk would be discoloured - apparently from the flames that the no-longer stock turbo spit out when shifting under load.
It is safe to assume that the parents' passion has had a certain (and not at all negative) influence on their son. This is parenting done right.
I wholeheartedly agree, parents think they are being selfless by sacrificing their passions for the children but it will have a negative outcome over time for everyone… people need their passions 👏
Nice choice for Ben, I went Italian with the GrandTurismo S which seats 4 nicely and similar car. Great choice, the DB9.
I have driven faster cars, better handling cars and more comfortable cars but the DB9 does 95% of all of those in 1 package. Comfortable, quick and shrinks around you. 1700 miles in 6 days around Ireland this year cemented just how much I love this car
Every time I drive it back from doing another review, even much more valuable cars for the channel I’m always reminded why I love it so much

Always wanted an Aston, but when I could finally afford one I tried various model's including a DB9. As an ex German car specialist/mechanic I can't tell you how disappointing the Astons were, beautiful but such poor build quality and simply to small for a 6'4" man to drive for more than a short run. I spent 3 months driving all over the UK trying various GT cars for between 25 and 50k . I loved the Maserati grandtourisimo. Very comfortable, better looking and I found better finished. The XKR was definitely far better value and felt better made. The Bentley continental I loved but the wife thought it was to 'old man' . Then I tried a 2013 Mercedes SL63 AMG performance pack. Well that was that really! Better quality, better made, more comfortable, even just cruising, more power, and 30 mpg on most long runs. Cabrio and hard top. And the sound!!! Wow! Not as pretty though. But one year on I know I made the right choice as the reliability and relatively low service and running costs just make the deal so much better. My mates Maserati has gone wrong twice in that time. My other mate's vantage has rust appearing, the rear wheel bearing has let go and he's sold it with under 40k miles. Another friend still loves his Bentley , but it's been expensive to run and service. And my wife's friend loves her XKR, its had a couple of minor issues, abs sensors and hood problems but overall been a good toy.

Life is too short to drive a Golf! Audi coupe, porsche 944s2, Mercedes 320sl-24v, Ferrari 456gta, all while being dad to my two sons!

@@alanstonelake2673 I still regret selling it! But the tax man and I had different interpretations of the prevailing tax rules!!! It was stupendously fast, 168mph on one European tour! Had enough space for two and loads of luggage for a lengthy tour. Quite discreet, mine was blue and many people didn't realise what it was until they clocked the name. It was incredibly fragile though, I can't remember a holiday when it didn't breakdown. We used to say it liked a longer holiday as it used be delivered on a low loader two weeks later! I would say that as an old fashioned auto you only really got the full bellow at full beans. I have a DB9 now and the option of the flappy paddles for when you want to have some fun at a sensible speed is better!! But they are criminally under appreciated and all this rubbish about being a four seater, it's no more a four seater than a DB9 or any other 2+2 grand tourer, but uniquely for Ferraris that seems to be unacceptable? Anyway, if you get the chance, buy one!
@@lips5913 ahh dark blue that's the best colour. Yes would love one but would nether be able to afford one. I also was a huge fan of the virage vantage which was one of it's main rivals. Yep db9s are absolutely beautiful. Much nicer than the db7 it replaced

When I had my daughter, we would go driving around in my MGB GT. She would always say “Daddy, they’re smiling at the little green car!” (It was a 73, one year color of what amounted to avocado green!)

As a twin born in 1965,my parents avoided the estate cars and we were ferried around in a mini, a Bristol 401, a mustang 289 fast back, a camero soft top,citroen ds21, a jenson interceptor and in (1980) a 1968 rolls Royce silver shadow.last car they had before I left home was a citroen cx.
As a Millenial American, We got carried around in either station wagons(Estate cars) Minivans or SUV's. But now with lame little CUV's that are absolutely unappealing, I'd much rather carry kids around in a wagon. Especially a Sporty wagon.

Great stuff - really enjoyed this :D I'm early 30's and picked up an 06 Vantage earlier this year as a "bucket list now or never" type thing, to tick the box for a year or so, and move it on before starting a family...... far more impractical than the DB9 but i've already decided it's staying forever and my as yet unborn son or daughter will grow up with it in his or her life, and I can't wait to make memories and take lots of photos, as he or she toddles around in the garage "helping" me do the brakes or polish it etc, on sunny Sundays :) Then one day it'll be theirs.

@Dadcars, 4 kids and a DB9, you are my hero sir! I am forever browsing Autotrader for a dream dadcar. My current affordable dadcar is a "308 in a dress" as @Jayemm referred to it a few years ago 🤣. A dream absolutely practical dadcar would be a manual converted E61 M5 touring.
I really enjoyed the talk with the owner segment. I think that the main videos should still be your take, James, but an in depth interview with the owners of the various cars on the second (or maybe even third!) channel would be really interesting!

Thank you Jayemm. Great video and I can completely relate to the topic discussed today, having considered a db9 volante for the daddy life with two young children. I finally opted for a second gen Maserati granturismo sport (4.7 litre v8 with full carbon pack and low mileage and full Maserati service over 10 years). The crunch point was the space in the back seats: no comparison between the two. To the dads (and mamas) out there: go for the Maser !

Love it, these are such good cars as long as you budget for proper maintenance. Hugely underrated and always feel special. Peak Aston Martin for me. So nice to see one used properly and enjoyed as they should be😀
It's important not to forget what you promised yourself as a kid. I've two kids but often just need to ferry one of them and I use my MK3 MR2 all the time. I use my E39 if I have to move two of them.

Love to see stories like this, man’s living it up! These cars aren’t actually that expensive due to the fact they’ve levelled out value wise. A brand new Audi Q5 is the best part of £40-45k and will drop half its value in the 3 years. The Aston at £40k will still be worth that or more in 3 years and (touch wood) won’t costs £20k in repairs during that time. Overall cheaper ☝️

I know, people winch at the higher running costs yet happy to take huge hits in depreciation on more “economical” cars 🤷♂️
@@dadcars mate of mine bought a diesel golf at the same time I bought a used e92 m3. He joked about how it would break down and cost me a fortune but it cost me maybe £1500 in 3 years for servicing and small repairs and I sold it for what I paid, whereas he lost around £10-12k in the same time purely on depreciation. Saying that some people don’t get so lucky and end up with astronomical bills 😬

Great video! A dad myself and looked at exactly the same car for exactly the same reason and found very little on the practicality. Also, great work Jay helping others with their ambition to build their channel, really respect that. Definitely subscribing.
P.S. Didn't go with the DB9, went with a 2018 S63 coupe. More room in the back than a DB9 and more up to date than Maserati GTS.
It was a case of make it work because it was in my heart… but work it does… just 😅

When my Daughter Was born we had a honda accord estate then shortly after traded it in for a Honda CRV which was a great car but not really me but I had to share it with my wife so it suited us. Then my wife changed jobs and we needed a second car so I got her a Toyota Auris and traded the CRV in for a 35k mile 2007 3.0 Petrol Jag XJ. My daughter Loves the Jaaag. its comfy, smooth, quiet plenty of space and a great family car for road trips

Lolz! I'm called Ben and have an X5 with 3 kids. And been through all those. I went with 3 car garage with a Jag XK8. Not a great decision. Soon looking for a third car to add to X5 and i20N
I also watch Ben’s videos, great new UA-camr. You can see his kids love going out in it! This is making me want to get mine out, it’s away for winter.
Sadly the access to my garage is too narrow for the DadB9 so I have to drive it through the winter 😉 give it a hose down on the underside rear if it’s salty though
Sold my Mazda 626 sport coupe around 94 when my eldest Daughter was two. Wonderful car and very rare now , but it just knackered my back getting her in and out of the back, really awful experience when raining and you can't park outside your house. Moved to a semi with a drive before the second Daughter came along and bought a 2.0 mk3 Cavalier
I ran one a some years back. Worked well for two young kids on the school run. I did once get a bit of of bollocking from another parent however, when one of their boys said. ‘ we have just had the quickest fast food meal ever”…. Upon enquiring what the boy was on about, the parent was told “ oh we did 125mph on the way there” 🤭
The various Ford parts bin switchgear are self evident and the Volvo SatNav is atrocious but they engined is glorious and annual running costs not crazy

Hell yes!! I am considering a DB9 in the near future to replace my Audi S8. I would probably daily drive it because I do low miles and can perform my own maintenance... and don't have kids to feed, either.
It's very impressive and I applaud the owner for doing it. I haven't looked at prices but was a Rapide too much more expensive?

Not quite the same (both in number of kids or prestige of car) but I traded in my diesel estate as I just wasn't using it that much for its intended use, granted it was a Alfa 159 SW for a E81 BMW 130i when I had my second son. Definitely benefited from doing less mileage due to remote working but both my boys love trips in 'the race car'.

My Dad also daily drove a DB9 as our family car for the first 15 years of my life, we are a family of four always with lots of luggage, pretty much every day for 10 years drove from North London to Dunsfold. Amazing cars, never missed a beat, although I'm sure I have neck problems after sitting in those rear seats up until age 15! The best mile munchers and enough oomf to get you out of any sticky situations, he he drove that thing in a style that isn't usually associated with Aston drivers... Probably did 150k miles in DB9s and they're fabulous. Clarkson was completely correct

Ameriacn here. I almost wound up being carried around as a little kid in a cool car back the early 90s, But sadly it was just out side of my dads budget at the time no matter which way he shuffled his finances around. Back in 94, my dad was dead set on getting out of his jeep that he'd had since new(First car) and wanted something more suited for me now being in the picture. And he wanted something cool for the first time. So he fell in love with at the time was a Pontiac Bonneville SSEI, which came from the factory with a Supercharged 6 cyl. Apparently the one he wanted was Black with Gold wheels like his truck. But as mentioned earlier, he just couldnt afford it no matter how hard he tried.
Sadly he's never owned a cool car in my 30 years of life, Instead he's only owned trucks and thats all I knew growing up. Though he almost did buy a Z06 during the Recession. Which made me very excited, but sadly he decided against it.
Always wondered how thic car would do in a comparison with the 612/599 (more sportif) or CL600 (more luxurious/refined).

Ben is hoping to drive my classic Mercedes soon (same as your friend Darrens). My exposure to sports cars was the early 80s. My father bought a brand new Lotus Esprit S2 in 1978 and we would fit dad,mum my brother on her lap and me sat on the centre consule in it.

Thats such a great idea for a car channel. A dream car of mine is the lexus isf because it got the v8 I love and its a 4 door. I will need to work out if it has enough space in the back before I get one though.
I had someone comment about getting some Lexus on the channel, I’ve never driven one but 💯 hoping to get some on the channel
