Have you considered using your other mixers and interfacing it with the Zoom R20? For example, if the mic connectors are tight as you mentioned, perhaps you can connect mics to your external mixer, and whatever other effects as well, and just send the mixer output to the Zoom via the Line input jacks.

I try to record direct lines so the audio demos have no coloration from other connected equipment.
