- Yes! Young blood DOES seem to have some benefits but...it's more complicated than that.

I use the story of Ambrosia, the Silicon Valley startup that promised the fountain of youth in the form of a transfusion, to illustrate more tips and tricks of the pseudoscientific trade. Heterochronic parabiosis has some fascinating effects, but like with so much quackery, a tiny kernel of truth is extrapolated into something completely fictitious.
Plus this was an excuse for me to revisit Blade, Silicon Valley, Buffy, Interview with a Vampire, Sesame Street and of course the greatest of them all, Count Duckula.

Medlife Crisis Hey i found a really intriguing subject I think would be a good case to investigate. Orthotropics
While we are suggesting topics to debunk... if you get a chance check out a fanatic online called "Ivor Cummins". He's a chemical engineer that is obsessed with coronary artery calcification/fad diets and thinks that he has all the answers to chronic disease (of course). His particular mania crosses over nicely with your profession, I'd be particularly interested in a deconstruction of his ideas in a way that a lay person can understand (he has a tendency to beat around the bush endlessly but there is a reasonably succinct interview on the popular yet highly woo "What I've learned" channel). I ask because he keeps cropping up on health/fitness media that I consume, his biases meet mine it seems but it's way too big a stretch for me to be sucked in!

This seems like a very useful video to point people to in general about how just because "they did a study" doesn't mean you can trust their claims. Going into how to skew the results in your favour that way does so much more than many times I've seen people take apart bad studies. Especially the part about ordering so many tests but not focusing on the outcomes of all of them.
Oooooh I love a good take-down video. (Hey wtf my channel doesn't have anything to do with being blind. I was just blind drunk. Fake news)
Heh, how do you know I was referring to you? OK I totally was but I needed to make a joke out of it. btw this isn't at all the thing that I mentioned I was planning, I actually need to learn how to animate for that. It might take...some months.

I watched a video many moons ago, about Hydrogen Sulphide induced metabolic stasis.
It said that it could be used for:
a) long duration space travel
b) pausing a person in a critical condition (heart attack, stroke, physical trauma), so they have a better chance of surviving the trip to hospital where better care is available.
I haven't heard anything of it since, but maybe it could be an interesting topic for you to explore?
Its funny because hydrogen sulphide kills you.
@Araki Hisahsi so can oxygen or just about anything else. Everything is a poison, it's just highly dose dependent.
@@Jake12220 Yes but inhaling a regular amount of oxygen doesn't kill you, drinking hydrogen sulphide does.
@@holyravioli5795yep if you drank hydrogen sulfide you would certainly die. Drinking anything that needs to be -60 degrees Celsius to be liquid would, let alone liquid farts(it's also known as rotten egg gas and a common cause for the bad smell of farts).
It's honestly an interesting chemical, harmless at low doses, very smelly, but certainly has killed. Honestly, the last time my dog farted in the car lm surprised l didn't die, at the time l was kinda wishing l would....
@@Jake12220 Ok obviously anything will kill you given the right circumstances but the real question is why would anyone consider drinking hydrogen sulphide, let alone think it's healthy.

I am sure he's gonna blow up like a few of the other channels I have subbed to. I watch Project farm grow from just over a few thousand subs to over 200k in a year.
One thing about living in Silicon Valley I never could stomach-- all the damn vampires.
That was actually an interesting way to solve the problem of pumping blood for a patient. Parent does it for the child. Glad we have pumps now, but that's genius.
Just wanted to say that, as a night shift healthcare worker myself, I didn't know how much I needed a relatable youtube channel like this one
Love this channel... I can't understand how you are not still with at least ~200k subscribers. Keep up the amazing work!

This channel is soooooo underrated 10/10 would succ again
Since my 70th birthday, I have been transfused twice, each time with a pint of blood, and each time for valid medical reasons (or so I am assured). The blood was not selected to be from younger people, but hey! What are the odds? I’m now every bit of 72 years old, and no younger for the experience.
I met one guy when I lived in CA who claimed this worked. He was nine years younger than me and looked like my older brother. I didn't point it out to him.
My take away: Wait a minute, Buffy was named after a component of blood?? Damn that's clever.
Another great video, thanks. Those clips from "What We Do in the Shadows" brought back some funny memories.
Best wishes for your PhD work. I lived in the UK 1985 to 89 doing my PhD. Thirty years of being back in Australia and I'm still not allowed to donate blood because of the Mad Cow thing. There seems to be a link between PhD and blood transfusions. I think it's worth a medical trial.
I'm ashamed to say that until now I was almost sure that it actually worked.
I need to be more critical of such claims in the future.
Fantastic video as always! There's also another point of controversy that you din't cover, but one of the major players in this field of research, Dr. Amy Wagers, published a landmark study a few years back into identifying one factor, GDF11, they determined might be crucial in mouse parabiosis studies, needless to say it hasn't "aged" well. With retractions, conflicting studies, and as of late, research indicating that it might actually induce muscle wasting. I do believe there are circulatory factors that might dampen some aging effects, but like the other newest biotechnology innovations like stem cell implantation and CRISPR modifications, there's a long line of charlatans waiting to swindle, deceive, and mislead their clients and the public.
you made a pretty compelling argument for curiosity stream, so i used ur link and started a trial

It could work. Just as fasting and autophagy works. 99% of all age related decreases are lifestyle related. You could replace the old mitochondria and get replacements from children's blood. All you need to do is fasting 24 ours before the transfusion. thd child shuld also be fasting so autophagy is in full swing
"Cross circulation" That whole using an adult's circulatory system to take over for a child's during surgery is kind of beautiful.
Count Duckula! Very fitting choice
Thanks for the upload. I recall about ten years ago reading about research in Mexico transfusing blood from donors 16 years or younger into senior recipients. The scientist predicted that a novel blood protein was responsible for the rejuvenating results. Then a few years later back in 2016: probably May - July; two separate research groups reported preliminary findings one of which was a Japanese based group and both had successfully identified a protein responsible for the effects. However more research was reported as been needed by the principle investigators.

I thought if a person get frequent blood transfusions it can increase the risk of rejection and cause graft host disease because of tissue differences. The ABO system isn’t the only blood type system. If a person gets blood transfusions often they have to do more accurate tissue typing because the body will start rejecting the blood if the tissues don’t match.
I always wonder how people just figure out that they'd be great for UA-cam. Because, honestly, you're a natural at this.
Hello Rohin, would you mind making a video covering the studies that have been conducted on Wim Hof and his breathing method ? I am really curious if the claims about his/ the methods ability to fight of serious disease are true. Could you also talk about the method itself and possible health risks, considering that it involves hyperventilation (at least thats what it seems like to me)? Thank you :)

A study I really would like to see is the placebos effect of reverse aging!
Placebo can do the most amazing thing and why not reducing some of the ill effects by aging?
Imagine having a transfusion reaction from an illegal transfusion and having to go to ED to explain what you've done.
I'd be really interested in your take on the other anti-aging technologies currently in research.

My grandfather's haemoglobin fell severely. As all others in my family had diabetes, I was the only one who could give him blood. (he's a religious person and didn't want any other person's blood *facepalm). For some reason the doctor ultimately decided against it as I'm a woman, so it's not a perfect fit for him (?). Dear Doctor, I have a question. Today a 20 year old supermodel from my country (Netherlands) died due complications of a heart attack. 2 Weeks ago she didn't feel well and suddenly got a heart attack. I can't find anything about young people and sudden heart attacks online. My question is: How often do young people age(15-25) get heart attacks? and why?
I thought this could be a great future video idea. Thanks!
The simple answer is: incredibly rarely. But there is more than one type of heart attack. And cardiac arrest is often reported in the press as a heart attack when it isn't. There are causes for heart attacks or cardiac arrests in young people that might be the cause here. Do you have a link I could check out for her story? Thanks

Oh god that dude! I've tweeted about him quite a lot, he's obviously insane but the thing that perplexes me is how so many apparently sensible journalists have bought his BS! Thanks, if he pops up in the news again I might well do.
He even looks like hes straight out of some X Files episode or an evil Bond villain (or from MGSV). I think it's intriguing in the sense that he Might go through with it regardless of success, we all know that medical history has it's dark side where we've been able to take leaps ahead by people doing far worse things to others.
My physiology lecturer had told us of this weird anecdote:
Supposedly, in China, as people rush to get on the trains, their heart rates and blood pressure increase, only to fall once they get on the train... hardly surprising, but apparently some faint as they're crammed into these trains as their blood pressure drops, but since they can't faint and fall over (because it's so packed), blood is unable to return to the heart and brain properly, thus resulting in some unfortunate deaths...
Bit weird, but thiught it may make for some good content for a video if you were to talk about it 😊
I just found your channel and I just love the humor and medical topics. I'm only a veterinary tech but I'm interested in everything from cosmology to...less broad topics. :}
I don't know if it can retard the aging process, but my aging grandmother received younger blood during a hip operation. Her energy levels were significantly higher for quite a while. Joining the test animals was "test cheating" in my opinion.
