btw,Those are near the very best,if not the THE best Arowanas on the net. I think those guys just might reach 4' in perfect health and very active. Some public aquarium I saw on the tube also had some very old and large Arowana in about the same size aquarium. They are also very good at reprocessing any dead mice caught in traps...one gulp and an Arowana smile.
Thank you. The aros got a pretty bad drop eye. They have a foot to go to 4', probably will never happen. Mice? :) Should I consider including mice as treats?
@@Fish-Story Dead ones..at that size they could handle rats. All dead for the safety of the fish too. I didn't really notice the drop eye. I suspect that a more varied diet would help...but mine would get that and I fed freshwater smelts,beefheart,and other salt water anchovy like fish. Looking back,maybe a few dead rodents would have cured that. I have an angelfish Viktor that had a balance problem..what I noticed is it would only eat flakes..ignored all other foods. So,I tried dried krill ( reconstituted) 2 weeks ago, it actually like them. Right now its balance isnt perfect,but much improved. Malnourished maybe,now better.
I agree. Diversifying feed is critical to long term success, unless feeding a high quality dry feed. Our aros have a pouch above the dropped eyes. Likely it is a fatty tissue that could be rather easily removed at home but one needs some practice. Too much non-aquatic fat in the diet from the cheap Ziegler pellets I used to feed. Yes, of course dead mice. I don't feed live as that would be unsafe and also sadistic in my book (just speaking for myself, no one has to agree or do as I do).
You probably don't put that light on over it unless like now..its being filmed. Some fish just are not aquarium fish. Pelagic fish being near the worst. Maybe one day Viktor you will come across a 10' or more round plexi aquarium. I had set up decades ago a summer pool that size and with a strong pump, a really good spin was kept going..the Red Hooks and Tinfoils migrated "upriver" constantly.

The 4500 gal tanks are semi-round, I could have easily made the water spin if I aimed the pipes for it. I had made a while ago a mental note to self to try exactly what you say next time I modify the pipes or add more pumps.
Legendary. Always a pleasure watching. Would be wonderful if P. gigas could be attained. There are a few people in asia (i myself grew one out until it was no longer suitable for my aquarium) and i think some export to the states. Not sure on the exact rules
I appreciate your kind words. Yeah, gigas are a holy grail. Never seen one in hobbyist hands that I'd be sure 100% it was a gigas. Seems to be complicated with hybrids being offered as gigas too from fish farms and their experimentations. Honest or deceiving errors, I don't know. They are extremely highly regulated, near impossible to import into the US unless it's the very top tier Aquarium or Research Lab, I imagine.
Those are my favorite catfish. I kept the Dorado catfish before and just like you said they are very skittish. Mine would try jumping out all the time and ended up succeeding. I would recommend raising them in a large round aquarium/pond

Thank you. No, never have seen true gigas for sale or in private hands. Some of our peers claim to have had gigas but none presented a convincing case in my humble opinion. I have only ever kept iridescent shark (hypophthalmus) and black ear (larnaudii). Never came across any other for sale and available to me.
They don't appear to grow fast, at least in hobbyist hands. The large size of the tank should help some for sure, but it may mostly result in having the fish with less or no injury to the snout; it may not necessarily speed up its growth rate.

I assume we are talking about the Peru piraiba and the dourada catfish too; not sure who cross breeds with who in your supposition. I know little but my current understanding doesn't involve any hybridization, I've never heard of this and I don't believe this. Natural hybridization happens exceedingly seldom and the hybrid offspring can be told apart from either parent; moreover such offspring is usually sterile or mostly sterile. I'd struggle too with tying overfishing in the wild with prevalence of "supposed" small size for specimen kept in captivity.

Wels as you know we have. MGC is pretty much impossible to get in the USA. Goonch we have never had because we were told by an expert (highly esteemed Wesley Wong of Rare Fish) that our water gets too warm in the summer for large goonches. There is a healthy goonch aficionado and expert community on the Monster Fish Keepers forum, if you wanted to partake of their vast and 1sthand knowledge. I am on that forum as well but I only read about goonches, almost never participate as I've never had one.
It is more peaceful because the occasional damage is less consequential. The wyckii has improved a ton since the initial introduction in that it defends its space with less rigor and frequency, yet it's space is well defined still.
The body proportions are close but distinctly different to an eye that have seen enough of both. When small, the spotting is obviously different. With respect to adults, the false ones do not exceed 4 feet in the wild.
@@superdragon3060 From little that I know, B. capapretum aka false piraiba can be expected not to exceed 2.5ft-3ft in captivity after a decade; B. filamentosum from Peru aka Peru piraiba appear to maybe grow a bit bigger perhaps 3ft-3.5ft over a decade; B. filamentosum from Suriname aka Suriname piraiba would probably hit 6 ft in a decade. They live at least several decades but probably grow very slowly after the initial years. A 4ft piraiba, true or false, would be adequate in a 20x10x4, more is better.

I've never looked at this in depth but I recall channels breed for people rather easily in large natural ponds and lakes. If I recall correctly. I too saw it in passing one or a few times, not like a detailed account.
Try covering the side of the tank with those fake rock backgrounds. It helps a lot. I've kept mine in concrete tanks and they don't run into the wall. My theory is that they must be able to see the wall as they have bad eyesight.

Right. Thank you again. On keeping them together... I have only experience with small ones. I usually buy them at 2"-3" in groups of 2-3 and by the time they are 4", the bigger ones will bully the smaller ones badly even in a 240 gal / 1000 liter tank. I have seen it 3 times already with three different batches. So I separate them at that early age and never mix again. Are you saying i could mix them later in life?
@@Fish-Story From what I observe from mine all 4 was good living together... with 3 of my piraibas... they do squabble but not much. The piraibas keep them in check. All was going well and they got to about 12"... and then one fateful day I came back from work to find out... my dad didn't switch off the chlorine tap water. I lost all my fish. I can dig out the last video of them in my phone though

I think they should be fine so long piraiba cannot swallow the firewood and the firewood doesn't get too aggressive when larger as some report. They both will outgrow the 3000 gal quickly, especially the firewood. Good luck, bro.

Our both Peru piraiba looked the same at 5" when we bought them. The usual. When combined in one tank, one got paler and the other got darker, is all.

my dorado is almost 2 foot ive you use a backround and also cover the sides it will be less on the nose

is it ok with firewood?
ive got 70cm piraiba and 90cm firewood, but my tank is big 3000 gallons
