- A quick video about boxes and beetles.
Unpacking is a tiny marvel of a game, with an incredible amount of care put into every little detail. I wanted to take a look at a few of my favourite details and how they make the whole experience even greater than the sum of its parts.

SMALL UPDATE / CORRECTION
When I was doing the initial research and writing for this video the sources and articles I found placed a heavier emphasis on Jeff van Dyck’s role as audio lead, and less so on his wife Angela’s part, which resulted in my thoughtlessly mentioning her as simply ‘also credited’. It was only right after publishing that I realised that Angela was in fact credited for the foley production, making her role in the sound design that I gushed so much over just as, if not more important! I should have made that clearer and credited both Jeff and Angela equally, mea culpa.
It’s an inevitable fact of life that no project is ever truly finished; no matter how much you tweak it you’ll always find more changes you want to make, and that’s never more true than in the first few days immediately after finally pushing it out the door. Normally I take a firm personal stance that once a video is done I’ll stop thinking about it so I can focus on something else, but in this case I wanted to write a quick addendum because I don’t want to accidentally play a part in devaluing someone else’s hard work. Apologies Angela, your part in the game was vital and you did an incredible job!
nice video! I saw your Mantis Lords video on hollow knight. if you manage to find the time, could you try to do a breakdown on the Troupe Master Grimm fight?
@@zarif1217 I adore both the Grimm and Nightmare King Grimm fights (they're probably both in my top 5), but I'm afraid I likely won't be doing more Hollow Knight stuff at least until Silksong comes out. I have too many other projects I want to focus on!
@@Mezzamine ah well. still though, love your content and wish you all the best on your youtube journey
I literally just discovered your channel last night, and watched everything. Then I noticed that the most recent video was 8 months old. I subscribed anyway, "just in case" but didn't actually expect to see more from you. Imagine my surprise when less than 24 hours this showed up in my subscription feed. This was an absolutely wonderful video, and I'm so glad you took the time to make it. Congratulations on the new job by the way, and I'm looking forward to what's next.
the minute that gold finish star popped up after the picture got put in the storage space had me going "ah... shit dude" like it makes you ache a little knowing the character probably caught it herself after just finishing unpacking and realizing that 'no, that isn't a happy memory any more' like dude what a heartbreak
AS far as sound design goes, unlike movies where things just sort of happen at you, games can enjoy the benefit of interactivity. When a sound effect is a direct reaction to a mouse click - that's when monkey brain neuron activation .png happens.
Maybe it's me, maybe it's the simplistic nature of the game with a laser focus on the placement of items but the first time I put a can of bug spray on the bathroom tiles I kept picking it up and putting down for at least half a minute.
So I don't think it's as invisibleorearer.
I met the developers of this game last week! They're so nice and game some excellent insight on how they actually made the game. The process was surprisingly cimplex
Heck yeah, this game seems like such a cute little gem and the bit with the picture is a masterful bit of concise storytelling through gameplay!
I didnt expect too much from this, but that scene right near the end made me tear up.
going to a room and finding a baby crib there absolutely destroyed me.
Hey, I’ve revisited this channel quite a few times in the past few months and was sad to see nothing new, so it was a really exciting moment when I looked through my subscription feed and saw that there was actually a new video! Welcome back, this video was great as always and I’m looking forward to that next one!
Oh i remember the picture! The one thing i think you can see it beforehand is the fact that the protagonist puts the pin on the face of her ex. That stood out to me, but again i didnt think i'd have to move it away later.
Also, in that same way, one level before, when you move in with your boyfriend, there is as far as i know literally no room for your diploma but under the bed. While you could hang it up beforehand and afterwards, in that level you can only just cram it under the bed, which to me already signalled that that relationship wasnt gonna turn out great.
Love the storytelling in the game, also great video :D
Thank you! And yes, another excellent bit of subtle storytelling in the game that I really wanted to mention but couldn't find a place for in the script!
The legend returns! Welcome back!
Oh hey you're the guy that sold me on playing Wizards of Legend! Hell yeah, awesome to see you making more videos!
The rewatch is one of the most satisfying things ever, sound and video included
This is one of my favorite games, my favorite on narrative. It's just delightful to notice how much of knowledge you acquire on the hidden main character personality and their life story without a word been said. And I love the room for interpretation that the settings we're put on create, which make the experience personal to anyone that plays it. All of that is a pure demonstration of a beautiful game design. Character development, mood changing, back story, plot twists, rise and fall actions, and a beautiful end. This game tells a solid interesting attention keeping story, with no words said, no cut-scenes , no dialogs, all gameplay. It's near to perfection if not perfect.
I love how passionate your videos are
Id like to also point out that at the end with the picture of the ex, the pin that holds the picture up is on the face of the ex instead of in the corner like all of the other photos. Another amazing detail.
really excited for the longer video you mentioned
Your videos are an absolute treat. Thank you so much for sharing them.
How is your videos so good but horribly underrated? I hope the recommendation gods are on your side.

It's always a treat to see you uploading a video.
This game looks incredible and even though it's not a game I think I would personally be interested in, I definitely see the appeal and it's always interesting to learn more about games from genres I don't play myself.
Hey Mezzamate, it's been a while, sorry for coming late :D
Glad to see another Video from you! I doubt I could read so much into unpacking like you do but it has been interesting to follow you.
I hope your new job is working out fine and with that until the next video :)

He's fine he loves it really. It's enrichment
What frustrated me the most about this game was some spaces were just too small for how much stuff was "supposed" to fit there. Like there would be a crapton of plates and bowls but barely any cabinet and counter space. There would be a load of books and not enough room on the shelves or table tops. It really ticked me off and took the game from satisfying to annoying. I also didn't appreciate the repeat items. I get that some items are related to the story but it was annoying constantly putting that stuffed pig, eiffel tower and red bus toy in spaces it didn't fit or cramming it somewhere it didn't belong. Finally the sorting feature didn't make sense for some items. Like a picture frame was flashing red for being hung up in the kitchen as if people dont hang things up in the kitchen. Or I put the Gameboy on the bed and it flashed red as if people don't play games in bed. I had to turn this feature off because it was driving me insane trying to figure out where a "normal" person would put a mp3 player.
promosm
Ngl it kinda funny there is no video on slay the spire in your channel, although it is literally your profile pic. 😂
Tiny guitar
I'm so disappointed you didn't mention the fact that the protagonist is very much lesbian. Her new partner is also a woman and they adopt a kid together. It warmed my heart just stumbling across this because normally games with gay characters are marketed as such.
I don't know if you just missed this or didn't feel like mentioning it so it would start a fight in the comments or take away from the other beautiful parts of the game but if you just missed it I very much encourage you to look into it more.
I definitely caught it! It was one of several game/story intersection elements that I wanted to talk about (along with a bunch of other little touches like the nods to the protagonist's faith and the contrast between her two partners' hobbies and interests) but just couldn't find a good space for in the script. In the end I decided to hope that some people would pick it up in the footage I used, particularly in the level rundown, and that it'd be a surprise for others who decide to check out the game themselves.
But yeah, I don't know if protag is bi or lesbian but I always like to see LGBT characters having central roles in games that aren't focused around LGBT issues. Even a small step towards normalising these things in society is an important one.
Hey I just found your content and wanted to give some feedback: the super loud music that suddenly plays makes it impossible for me to watch, even though I'd really like to! I really like your video apart from that :)
do you have a discord
Only a fairly private one I'm afraid, I tend to mostly keep to myself online outside of this channel!
I would like you to create a public server for you community once you hit a milestone. Im only saying this because you make great content.
