I drove the wheels off of our '64 Valiant which my parents bought new in '63. It was my first car and I drove it from '71 until around '75. It ran strong until the person that we sold it to totaled it. There was nothing wrong with the Plymouth Valiant! The 1965 four door sedan was beautiful and reliable if you overcame the leaking lifter tubes and maintained tthe rest. Mine had a replaced engine 169 cu.in. with roller everything, Hooker headers, the old four barrel carburetor setup had a custom built manifold and mixing can with a huge Holly four barrel carburetor setup replacing it. And never follow the inflation recommendations the factory gave you. It was way too low. Used the tire pressure printed on the tires and it handled like a go kart. A great car.
The Hillman Imp was built by shipbuilders in Lynwood in Scotland rather than down in Ryton in Warwickshire, England. Harold McMillan who was PM at the time asked Lord Rootes to build the factory at Lynwood, so the Conservatives could get into a socialist region of Scotland. It backfired helping in demise in what was once a quality group of companies. If the Imp had been built at Ryton, the story might have been a different ending. The Imp was also far superior in both performance and handling to it's main rival the BMC Mini.

Interesting review as the Chrysler slant 6s had a reputation for reliability. I put over 130,000 miles on my '67 Dodge Coronet with the 225cu in 6 and Torqueflite transmission with no problems. Body rust, yes, but engine , no.

Now that I've watched the entire video, I realize how biased the producers were in naming these cars. Some of these cars were simply meant as urban "errand" cars, never intended to set a tire on the Interstate or Autobahn. A low top speed doesn't really matter in circumstances where the car won't ever be called upon to exceed 30 mph. The Peel Trident? Hardly a production car. As I recall, they made SEVEN of them. The Hillman Imp? Based on the ultra-successful and widely loved BMC Mini! Nobody has ever called the Mini a bad car! The Trabant was never sold outside of the Eastern Bloc, so of course it was never available in the U.S. The Imp came here in incredibly small numbers. Ditto the Amphicar. The Valiant and Dart were both perfectly acceptable cars that suffered from the final efforts of former master car stylist Virgil Exner. By the late 50's he had clearly lost his way. The Edsel? It dud have its electrical glitches and the abysmal build quality that Ford was known for at the time, but other than that the thing that held it back was that awful "urinal" grille. Then you singled out he 1960 Edsel without ever actually showing a 1960 model! In '60, the upright center section of the front of the car had gone away and been replaced by something that looked like it might have been stolen from the Pontiac design department. Teletouch pushbutton operation of the automatic transmission was gone, too. Why did you point out all of the shortcomings of the 1958 and '59 models exclusively while claiming that the 1960 model was deficient? Ford in general should have been on the list for the quality issues alone, and Chrysler Corporation across the board as well because of their incredible propensity to rust out within a year or two. In the eastern germany world there were a kind of ranking like Trabant= First step, car for the normal people, Wartburg= Step higher, more rare and expensive, Moskvitsch= Only for the top-ranked. One of those commercials about the Amphi Car was filmed at Sunnyside Beach in Toronto, I know because I was there and in total awe both of the car and the whole photoshoot. It was the white one, took most of the day.

Both had rear engines rear swing axle suspensions and most of the problems attributed to them were due to drivers who simply did not know how to drive a vehicle fitted with such suspension systems. The other cars you portray as being bad ie Subaru, Peel, Imp, Isseta, which by the way was a n Italian design licence built by BMW, developed bad reputations because people drove them in conditions for which were never intended to be driven, ie the Peel was never intended to be used on highways and was designed to be used for local driving. The same with the Subaru.The Imp was not a bad car, most of the faults with it were due to being rushed in to production before completing full development. I would suggest that if you were to look closely at the history of virtually every car produced world wide, you'd find find they all suffered reliability, quality control performance issues, its just that most didn't garner the same attention as the ten you've highlited.
No, the early Corvairs were way worst than the VW Beetle. I have driven many VWs and three different Corvairs over the years, two being 61 models and the other being a 65, and the early models were extremely ill handling at higher speeds. I would say that once GM got the gremlins out of it, it would be comparable to the VW, but still a bit more of a hand full when making sudden turns at higher speeds. And you are correct that a lot had to do with the driver, but people didn’t believe that they should have to “relearn” how to drive when buying a new car. The Corvair definitely gets more knocks than it deserves, but early models killed its future.

The Ford Edsel came out in 58 the 58 was the only year for a push button transmission 60 was the last year for the Edsel and all they showed is 58 an 59 models ,

You have to judge the cars for the circumstances they were designed for. Small bubble cars like the Isetta and the Peel were designed in a time when Europe was still recovering from the devastation of WW2 and income was not yet on par with the US, so small affordable transport which could get you from a to b dry and without physical strain was welcomed by the working class, it was their first chance to own a "car". Similar for the Subaru, in Japan the class of Kei Cars was implemented in the tax structure to promote the ownership, these cars were cheaper in tax and insurance, and in many places owners were exempt from having the obligatory private parking space when owning a car. By the mid 1960's the time for bubble cars was over in Europe as income started to raise quickly and more people could buy a standard compact or mid size car.

It's a bit sad that the Subaru 360, the Isetta not to mention the Peel isn't comparable whit American large cars. The Subaru was built to be a Kei car, small, affordable citycars. The Isetta was an attempt to motorize the the postwar Germany, often the first car young people cuold afford. The Peel was an english, a bit stupid attempt, to build a twoseated moped whith a cabin. If you got one - keep it! Prices are going up and they are prized well over 10 000 $!!

In 1960 my Uncle Bob drove up our driveway is a brand new gold & cream top of the line Edsel convertible. At 5 years old, I though it was the coolest thing I have ever seen.
The Imp was more successful than many small cars of the era. The only significant fault was the overheating, but steady driving (which is what it was intended for) made it a non issue. The engine (based on fire pump engine) was really ahead of its time, but had the then common corrosion issues between the head and the block. The Corvair, likewise, if driven as was intended was never a problem, but Ralph 'I'm a Dick' Nader all but killed it off. This is the Nader that did not have a driving licence. The Edsel - 'who wants an enormous vagina in the centre of the grille'? The Valiant and Dart were great looking cars. Why include both when they were virtually the same?

1960s Vauxhall Victor F Series, anyone? The car that biodegraded while you drove it? My father bought one of these. You KNOW it has a serious rust problem, when you see the road surface beneath your feet as the floor disintegrates. Yes, I watched this happen in person at the tender age of six. The car my father bought also chose to shed a front wheel in the middle of Liverpool. The few that survive are, paradoxically, worth decent money, because while the body panels and floorpan were as long lasting as an ice cream in the Sahara, the mechanical parts were robust. Once later classic car owners replaced the crap quality body panels with properly galvanised replacements, and corrected the stupid error of mixing different metal types in places where water could reach (and trigger the wholly predictable electrochemical mayhem), the surviving examples went on to be decent classic cars. If Vauxhall hadn't screwed up regally on the metallurgy front, the Victor F Series could have been a success, because the mechanical bits were rugged and easy to repair. But the model virtually wiped out Vauxhall's reputation for nearly 20 years, until they brought out the 1981 Cavalier, and if anything over engineered the rust proofing to make sure it didn't repeat the Victor débacle.
My wife wanted a 1962 dart. I was picking up a 1971 challenger at a barn loaded with classic American cars. At first I thought she was kidding. Then I responded "out of everything here this is one speaks to you? I HAD TO LOOK AT THAT UGLY THING FOR YEARS! Finally a drunk driver ran over the front of it in the parking lot on date night. Heard some tire screaming and a crash and a guy comes in saying "who owns a black classic car out there the guys trying to run". Well, I come out and there's one of those small penis trucks thats lifted to high on big tires. Well it broke one of his wheels off when he hit the car so he ran off, and when the cops found him, he was calling in the truck stolen. Apparently he was doing donuts in the parking lot
In my opinion, Isetta and Peel should be on the podium ahead of Trabant. Amphicar doesn't seem to be worse either, it deserved 6th place and Hillman 5th.
My uncle owned a valiant and lived in CT. 7 years after buying, the floor pans had rusted thru. Fortunately his brother in law did body work so he kept it rolling in the 12 years he drove it.
About the Corvair being on this list: WRONG! WRONG!! WRONG!!! In fact, the Corvair is the only car ever to be declared 100% SAFE by the U.S. government. They commissioned a test by the NHTSA to determine whether or not the Corvair was, indeed, unsafe. The outcome of the test was that the Corvair is no less safe than any other compact of the era and even safer than a few of them. One thing to keep in mind here is that the chairman of the NHTSA at the time was one Mr. Ralph Nader! Then there's the B.S. about the swing axle rear suspension being unsafe. If it was so unsafe, then why was it used by Porsche and Mercedes Benz (which even used swing axles in their racing cars)? Now, I can't speak to Mr. Naders ascertation of it being unsafe at ANY speed but, in over 40 years of Corvair ownership, I have yet to have an accident in one of them. They have even helped be avoid a few other drivers who seemed intent on hitting my car. I have run the cars in numerous Autocross events over the years, and I admit that I did spin one out once. Again, ONCE. Try that with a Falcon, Lark, or Rambler. Not gonna happen. The famous rollover footage in the video was intentionally rolled by a professional stunt driver on tires that weren't inflated properly. The man even admitted as much in a later interview. He said that he was hired to roll a Corvair and to drive a Falcon through the same slalom in such a way that it DIDN'T roll over.
The 1960-62 Valiant WAS ugly, but some people liked it (they needed glasses). 1963's restyle made it a success. 2:07 It's reallllly hard to find a 1960 Edsel, looks like they had to make due with picturing just 58's and 59's. 6:16 Isetta's only posed two problems for owners...no front end crash protection and they were weak at climbing hills, even gentle ones.

Definitely some wrong information here. First, the 1960 Edsel was a redesign- [ no Horse Collar], and was already on its way out. Just over 2800 Edsel cars were made for 1960 before production ended. Also , Neither the BMW Isetta, nor the Subaru were made for the American market. The ISO, and BMW Isetta was made for war torn Europe who just needed small basic Very Affordable transportation, that was bigger than a scooter. And the Subaru was actually a Japanese “Kei Car” - that is , it was designed to meet certain size requirements for the Japanese market. Very early 170 Slant 6 engines did have some issues, but were quickly fixed, and became legendary for reliability. The Corvair was not as bad as Ralph Nadir said. The Corvair did have some suspension issues, but back then , many cars were dangerous. [ * NOTE: Ralph Nader did not even have a Driver’s License ‼️]. There are other inaccuracies here, but there’s plenty of others who have likewise pointed them out.

The Hillman lmp was a absolute awful car unfortunately we got them in Australia it is 5he car that killed Rootes Group before the Hillman Imp Rootes Group was one of the largest richest motor companies in the UK along came the lmp and it was a total disaster my elder brother has a Sunbeam Stileto a fancy Hillman lmp and hasn't been running for years major engine troubles and compared to other Hillmans Humbers Sunbeams Commer vans all built by Rootes Group which were sightly better than the lmp and lsuzu Hillman Minxes were made in Japan and Hillmans were built in Australia and a Hillman Hunter won the first London to Sydney marathon they unfortunately went broke and died a slow death same with other British motor manufacturers there are only a couple that exist today which are owned by other countries and the Plymouth Valient which in Australia was the Chrysler Valiant considered a big car in Australia and l do remember them in the 1960s and l liked the design of them didn't mind them and they were all four door sedans and sold reasonably well

Your meaning for the Isetta is unfair. At first: BMW named the Isetta a crossing betwen Motorbike and Car, in the early times germany was that poor, only less people had money for a car. Most had bicycles or small mopeds, some had old Motorbikes or old Bikes from the Wehrmacht. Later, when germanys economy slowly starts to envolve more and more peolpe dont like rain and snow anymore whyle driving and hab children, but nor money for a real car so they accepted "Motorbike with a roof". Many people were proud about the Isetta bec it was a sign of evolution of society. No more poor worker who MUST drive to work in all weather, wet, frosted, when shopping then try to bring the items home without malheur, it was a big step from poor and small to normal and education. The Isetta was a good selling car but in the early years most people needed the money for more important things. Dont judge the early 50s in germany with the early 50s in US. In 62 most people uses bicycles and mopeds in germany, not cars. It was still a bombed and poor land. The most common cars werent Cadillacs or Chevrolets from 5 meters length, it were Käfer (Beetle) and NSU or small Opel. The car a good payed worker in germany would be a joke for an american Teenager that time. My parents (born 1932 and 1935) never had a drivers license for car or ever owned one, only my Dad had a licence for 50 ccm Mopeds. See the circumstances. An isetta or a Trabant is a Clownsmobile for americans but in West and East germany it was a sign of a special life standard of the worker. Bec the waiting time for a Trabby was that long so parents orders it for their kids the day the kid was born...so they can get the car when they have the driving license. And i remember my curiousity when i was a child and saw the first and oly time a car with a ships propeller. This cars/boats were planned as a gag, not for the mass.

My dad drove a 1962 Plymouth Belvedere wagon until about 1975. We swapped the slant 6 engine from an old Dart once.

The other cars you portray as being bad ie Subaru, Peel, Imp, Isseta, which by the way was a n Italian design licence built by BMW, developed bad reputations because people drove them in conditions for which were never intended to be driven, ie the Peel was never intended to be used on highways and was designed to be used for local driving. The same with the Subaru.The Imp was not a bad car, most of the faults with it were due to being rushed in to production before completing full development. I would suggest that if you were to look closely at the history of virtually every car produced world wide, you'd find find they all suffered reliability, quality control performance issues, its just that most didn't garner the same attention as the ten you've highlited.

No, the early Corvairs were way worst than the VW Beetle. I have driven many VWs and three different Corvairs over the years, two being 61 models and the other being a 65, and the early models were extremely ill handling at higher speeds. I would say that once GM got the gremlins out of it, it would be comparable to the VW, but still a bit more of a hand full when making sudden turns at higher speeds. And you are correct that a lot had to do with the driver, but people didn’t believe that they should have to “relearn” how to drive when buying a new car. The Corvair definitely gets more knocks than it deserves, but early models killed its future.

You have to judge the cars for the circumstances they were designed for.
Small bubble cars like the Isetta and the Peel were designed in a time when Europe was still recovering from the devastation of WW2 and income was not yet on par with the US, so small affordable transport which could get you from a to b dry and without physical strain was welcomed by the working class, it was their first chance to own a "car".
Similar for the Subaru, in Japan the class of Kei Cars was implemented in the tax structure to promote the ownership, these cars were cheaper in tax and insurance, and in many places owners were exempt from having the obligatory private parking space when owning a car.
By the mid 1960's the time for bubble cars was over in Europe as income started to raise quickly and more people could buy a standard compact or mid size car.

BMW Isetta Vs. its ' BMW 600" bigger 4-seat version were BOTH edited into this vid. The Isetta was no "flop" - it served its purpose. Like other '50s & '60s Euro bubble-cars, it helped both its country, and BMW, to Rebuild after WW II. BUT - the 4-seat BMW 600 version DiD Flop - making it VERY Rare -- And What's Cool About it ? -- It's Likely the Shortest 4 Adult seating, Highway-Legal car at 2.90 metres !

It's a bit sad that the Subaru 360, the Isetta not to mention the Peel isn't comparable whit American large cars. The Subaru was built to be a Kei car, small, affordable citycars. The Isetta was an attempt to motorize the the postwar Germany, often the first car young people cuold afford. The Peel was an english, a bit stupid attempt, to build a twoseated moped whith a cabin. If you got one - keep it! Prices are going up and they are prized well over 10 000 $!!

Were the micro-cars really considered as a vehicle people used daily? Didn't see a 1960 Edsel but for a second. An Impala & Nova in the Corvair clip? Inconsistencies.

In 1960 my Uncle Bob drove up our driveway is a brand new gold & cream top of the line Edsel convertible. At 5 years old, I though it was the coolest thing I have ever seen.
The Imp was more successful than many small cars of the era. The only significant fault was the overheating, but steady driving (which is what it was intended for) made it a non issue. The engine (based on fire pump engine) was really ahead of its time, but had the then common corrosion issues between the head and the block.
The Corvair, likewise, if driven as was intended was never a problem, but Ralph 'I'm a Dick' Nader all but killed it off. This is the Nader that did not have a driving licence.

The Valiant and Dart were great looking cars. Why include both when they were virtually the same?

My father bought one of these. You KNOW it has a serious rust problem, when you see the road surface beneath your feet as the floor disintegrates. Yes, I watched this happen in person at the tender age of six. The car my father bought also chose to shed a front wheel in the middle of Liverpool.
The few that survive are, paradoxically, worth decent money, because while the body panels and floorpan were as long lasting as an ice cream in the Sahara, the mechanical parts were robust. Once later classic car owners replaced the crap quality body panels with properly galvanised replacements, and corrected the stupid error of mixing different metal types in places where water could reach (and trigger the wholly predictable electrochemical mayhem), the surviving examples went on to be decent classic cars.
If Vauxhall hadn't screwed up regally on the metallurgy front, the Victor F Series could have been a success, because the mechanical bits were rugged and easy to repair. But the model virtually wiped out Vauxhall's reputation for nearly 20 years, until they brought out the 1981 Cavalier, and if anything over engineered the rust proofing to make sure it didn't repeat the Victor débacle.
My wife wanted a 1962 dart. I was picking up a 1971 challenger at a barn loaded with classic American cars. At first I thought she was kidding. Then I responded "out of everything here this is one speaks to you? I HAD TO LOOK AT THAT UGLY THING FOR YEARS! Finally a drunk driver ran over the front of it in the parking lot on date night. Heard some tire screaming and a crash and a guy comes in saying "who owns a black classic car out there the guys trying to run". Well, I come out and there's one of those small penis trucks thats lifted to high on big tires. Well it broke one of his wheels off when he hit the car so he ran off, and when the cops found him, he was calling in the truck stolen. Apparently he was doing donuts in the parking lot
In my opinion, Isetta and Peel should be on the podium ahead of Trabant. Amphicar doesn't seem to be worse either, it deserved 6th place and Hillman 5th.
I used to see loads of Hillman Imps well into the late seventies and maybe eighties in the UK, so it must have been reasonably popular and reliable.
My uncle owned a valiant and lived in CT. 7 years after buying, the floor pans had rusted thru. Fortunately his brother in law did body work so he kept it rolling in the 12 years he drove it.
The early 60's Darts offered the big hemi V-*s and the 440 wedge. on the track you learned to like it rear end

About the Corvair being on this list: WRONG! WRONG!! WRONG!!! In fact, the Corvair is the only car ever to be declared 100% SAFE by the U.S. government. They commissioned a test by the NHTSA to determine whether or not the Corvair was, indeed, unsafe. The outcome of the test was that the Corvair is no less safe than any other compact of the era and even safer than a few of them. One thing to keep in mind here is that the chairman of the NHTSA at the time was one Mr. Ralph Nader!
Then there's the B.S. about the swing axle rear suspension being unsafe. If it was so unsafe, then why was it used by Porsche and Mercedes Benz (which even used swing axles in their racing cars)? Now, I can't speak to Mr. Naders ascertation of it being unsafe at ANY speed but, in over 40 years of Corvair ownership, I have yet to have an accident in one of them. They have even helped be avoid a few other drivers who seemed intent on hitting my car. I have run the cars in numerous Autocross events over the years, and I admit that I did spin one out once. Again, ONCE. Try that with a Falcon, Lark, or Rambler. Not gonna happen. The famous rollover footage in the video was intentionally rolled by a professional stunt driver on tires that weren't inflated properly. The man even admitted as much in a later interview. He said that he was hired to roll a Corvair and to drive a Falcon through the same slalom in such a way that it DIDN'T roll over.
The 1960-62 Valiant WAS ugly, but some people liked it (they needed glasses). 1963's restyle made it a success. 2:07 It's reallllly hard to find a 1960 Edsel, looks like they had to make due with picturing just 58's and 59's. 6:16 Isetta's only posed two problems for owners...no front end crash protection and they were weak at climbing hills, even gentle ones.

Definitely some wrong information here.
First, the 1960 Edsel was a redesign- [ no Horse Collar], and was already on its way out.
Just over 2800 Edsel cars were made for 1960 before production ended.
Also , Neither the BMW Isetta, nor the Subaru were made for the American market.
The ISO, and BMW Isetta was made for war torn Europe who just needed small basic Very Affordable transportation, that was bigger than a scooter. And the Subaru was actually a Japanese “Kei Car” - that is , it was designed to meet certain size requirements for the Japanese market.
Very early 170 Slant 6 engines did have some issues, but were quickly fixed, and became legendary for reliability.
The Corvair was not as bad as Ralph Nadir said. The Corvair did have some suspension issues, but back then , many cars were dangerous. [ * NOTE: Ralph Nader did not even have a Driver’s License ‼️].
There are other inaccuracies here, but there’s plenty of others who have likewise pointed them out.
Show a real 1960 Edsel. 1960 Fairlane was modified by grille and tailights. Most parts of Edsel and Fairlane were identical, with the Edsel given an extra hit by the ugly stick.
More than half of these "Automotive misfires" are bringing 100 times their original cost at Mecum and Barrett Jackson. Some are easily bringing or topping $100k.

The 1960 Edsel had a grill that resembled the grill of a 1960 Pontiac. It was actually pretty nice looking compared to the 58-59 models.

EDSEL … pronounced ed sell and bearing the toilet seat in the front grill are the two key areas in our day that made the car fail.
The Hillman lmp was a absolute awful car unfortunately we got them in Australia it is 5he car that killed Rootes Group before the Hillman Imp Rootes Group was one of the largest richest motor companies in the UK along came the lmp and it was a total disaster my elder brother has a Sunbeam Stileto a fancy Hillman lmp and hasn't been running for years major engine troubles and compared to other Hillmans Humbers Sunbeams Commer vans all built by Rootes Group which were sightly better than the lmp and lsuzu Hillman Minxes were made in Japan and Hillmans were built in Australia and a Hillman Hunter won the first London to Sydney marathon they unfortunately went broke and died a slow death same with other British motor manufacturers there are only a couple that exist today which are owned by other countries and the Plymouth Valient which in Australia was the Chrysler Valiant considered a big car in Australia and l do remember them in the 1960s and l liked the design of them didn't mind them and they were all four door sedans and sold reasonably well

Your meaning for the Isetta is unfair. At first: BMW named the Isetta a crossing betwen Motorbike and Car, in the early times germany was that poor, only less people had money for a car. Most had bicycles or small mopeds, some had old Motorbikes or old Bikes from the Wehrmacht. Later, when germanys economy slowly starts to envolve more and more peolpe dont like rain and snow anymore whyle driving and hab children, but nor money for a real car so they accepted "Motorbike with a roof".
Many people were proud about the Isetta bec it was a sign of evolution of society. No more poor worker who MUST drive to work in all weather, wet, frosted, when shopping then try to bring the items home without malheur, it was a big step from poor and small to normal and education. The Isetta was a good selling car but in the early years most people needed the money for more important things. Dont judge the early 50s in germany with the early 50s in US. In 62 most people uses bicycles and mopeds in germany, not cars. It was still a bombed and poor land.
The most common cars werent Cadillacs or Chevrolets from 5 meters length, it were Käfer (Beetle) and NSU or small Opel.
The car a good payed worker in germany would be a joke for an american Teenager that time.
My parents (born 1932 and 1935) never had a drivers license for car or ever owned one, only my Dad had a licence for 50 ccm Mopeds.
See the circumstances. An isetta or a Trabant is a Clownsmobile for americans but in West and East germany it was a sign of a special life standard of the worker. Bec the waiting time for a Trabby was that long so parents orders it for their kids the day the kid was born...so they can get the car when they have the driving license.
And i remember my curiousity when i was a child and saw the first and oly time a car with a ships propeller.
This cars/boats were planned as a gag, not for the mass.

Our neighbors had a 60 Edsil and it spent more time in the shop then on the road and I remember my Dad saying that the grill looked like a Pontiac sucking a lemon. Old man Ford must have really hated his son to name that ugly lemon after him.
