@johndeere46408430 Plus, not everyone puts new (and sharp) blades on the chisel plows/subsoilers every year anyhow. We don't run a stalk chopper either. Just use a bat wing around the perimeters and on waterways after harvest. Along with any areas that might have drowned out.
@johndeere46408430 If you are referring to Deere's knife rolls, they really aren't that good enough in certain conditions. True, they are still better than the old style straight fluted snapping rolls, but, as they wear, or as the stalks get drier (and/or skinnier) and tougher, the worse they do. Gerringhoff RotoChop heads are the best chopping heads you can get. The ones that Deere had with choppers blades under them were a joke, and more dangerous. Not to mention an ultimate failure.
We run john deere chopping heads on our combines with stalk stompers and we don't have to run a disk in front of the chisel plows anymore.. might be something you would want to look into
This is a Loftness stalk chopper. I like the gauge wheel arrangement in front AND in back. Helps keep it out of the dirt.
@eaglesfan314 It makes small pieces out of the corn stalks. This allows it to flow through the chisel plow, and accelerates decay.
