  • He gained a reputation as an extremely polarizing figure in bodybuilding throughout his career, by openly criticizing the judges and some of his competitors. His willingness to stand up and point out the flaws in the system laid the groundwork for what his legacy would become in retirement...A controversial figure.
    Bodybuilding legend Shawn Ray is widely regarded by fans and critics as having one of the greatest physiques in bodybuilding history. Over the course of his 14 year career, he competed in 13 Mr. Olympias and placed outside the top 5 once, which no other bodybuilder has ever done.
    Shawn's un-politically correct and somewhat un-diplomatic approach to critiquing today's competitors, as well as numerous feuds with legends and members in the community, has cast a dark cloud over his legacy especially throughout his retirement

      Yates didn't have a torn tricep when Shawn was placing 2nd to him.
      Yates was also 50 pounds bigger, twice as wide and more conditioned at the same time.
      Sorry not sorry, it's not an abs and V taper contest.
      Front lat spread = Yates destroys little Shawn
      Side tricep = Yates destroys little Shawn
      Back lat spread= Yates destroys no width Shawn
      Back double = Yates destroys little Shawn.
      That's the reality of things, Shawn was aesthetic and that carried him in poses like the abs and thighs but he simply gave up too much size and width to win the majority of the poses. Don't blame the player, blame the game. Go and ask the IFBB why they created such a mathematical system, don't lash out on Yates, Coleman or whoever.

      @@mjlives5428 Oh and also it's not a body part contest and every single pose is judged individually. A torn bicep plays no role in 5 out of 7 mandatory poses therefore the competitor won't be marked down for it.
      Why would Yates not win the lat spreads where the bicep is not even visible/flexed? Sure you know the injury is there, but you can't see it in that pose. It's called simple logic, get over it.

Tomn8er is one of the biggest Ray fanboys which he himself admits to as Ray being his favorite bb-er of all time yet he still gives it to Yates because he understands the bodybuilding criteria and how bodybuilding shows are actually judged. They gave someone with a torn bicep and tricep with a bloated midsection a perfect score even though he was clearly flawed. Especially in the front double bi. And many other poses that would still showcase these undeniable very visible injuries. Even someone as dense as you should be able to grasp such a simple fact. Hell even a blind monkey in the dark could see that shawn ray was better than yates at that particular show.

    This was very well done. The editing, research and even the voice-over were terrific. With exception of the criticism of him, Shawn Ray would appreciate the professional quality. That said, bodybuilding during the 90s would have been less interesting without him. Also, he clearly had the physique to back up his mouth (Tony Romo probably couldn't do that quarterback-wise, as much, from a consistency standpoint, IMO).

Ronnie and Dorian where true kings. Shawn was just a special kind of competitive. He used his mouth and any other tool he had to gain him an advantage. Honestly, he has the perfect classic type of physique. But this is open bodybuilding. All goes! It,s about building massive muscular bodies. Shawn was pretty, but just not muscular enough to win.

  • @dj_m1999
    @dj_m1999 9 місяців тому +1

    Good video.
    here's a few takes I'd like to share:
    First, everyone is biased to their own physique and TYPE of physique, Shawn Ray had a herculean type physique, he saw bb-ing as art, his heroes and people who aspired him were people who resembled him. Zane, Bob Paris, et cetera. Much of his frustration about size is his inability to understand the judging criteria and how important size and width really is. They are absolute and not subjective. Size and conditioning always have and always will continue to be the 2 pillars of the sport due to that. How can you quantify aesthetics? it's COMPLETELY subjective, so subjective that there isn't even a one shoe for all definition when it comes to that word.
    25:30 they did change judges here and there, but it's not the judges who judge Mr. Olympia or any other show who decide the judging criteria, it's the IFBB, the organization itself that organizes these bb-ing contests and employs those judges. The same way no employee decides what is to be done with the company, it's the boss and the board of directors, no?
    27:05 Yates tore his bicep in '94, not just before the show in '97. He also looked far better on footage and controlled his midsection. GetBig youtube channel has HD footage of it, for reference.His legs and his back improved also, he was even stronger in the poses he was already sweeping people in.
    Next, perfect scores is yet another example of when something is not understood properly. I've heard Flex Wheeler talk about this on a podcast of sorts as well. Perfect scores simply mean that every single judge had Yates in 1st place. Not that his physique was absolutely flawless therefore "perfect". His SCORES were perfect due to every judge thinking that he edged Nasser out in the contest. If at least 1 judge thought that Nasser should've won over Dorian, then Dorian wouldn't have perfect scores.
    Lastly, Steve Weinberger only judged the Olympia when Dorian competed a few times, and he most definitely wasn't the head judge back then. He wouldn't be the head judge until very late 2000s I believe.
    '97 was really really close, Steve Weinberger himself said that, but Yates simply edged Nasser out in the mandatory poses.

    We're also dealing with the SJW Generation and the fact that people can't understand how much better the physiques were in the 90's (pre-internet era) than it is now. Everyone nowadays have twisted history and deleted history in an attempt to glorify the "social media" bodybuilder vs. the "eat or starve" bodybuilder"! Under most circumstances the person who's had to "eat or starve" has always risen to the cream of the crop! Shawn knows this, and others do not!

    I think Shawn was thinking of being the guy to break the story first like so many reporters do but he was wrong he jumped the gun and maybe somebody told him who he thought was a good person but didn't know he was hearing bullshit so sometimes you need to face check and this is a prime example of that think all reporters get told stuff he may think this will get me back think how many reporters get fame for ruining a career thinkblance Armstrong yes that was true but what if it wasn't it could've ending like this but his ego is to big

    I feel sorry for shawn and others during the 90s as they had great physiques; but standing next to Dorian who was just as ripped and making others look like midget, especially Ray--the winner was obvious

    Dorian Yates looks horrible! He's too massive and with no cuts--what's attractive about that? Shawn had it all--size, balance & cuts. And his posing what exceptional. Shawn was WALKING ART.

    I love Shawn. He is a leader, not a follower. He was braver than the rest, and he was 100 % right about everything, and the crappy judging that went on regularly back then. The guy is a bodybuilding icon, and was ahead of his time.

    I was a gym rat fresh out of high school for 15 years straight! If anybody knows these dudes to be juicing it's a person like myself that left it all in the gym leaving out with swollen arms and spaghetti legs. Foot trembling on the accelerator trying to make it home. And with all of that die hard work ethic STILL didn't see myself looking nothing like these guys. I was encouraged to join the natural bodybuilding contest though. Which was a bit controversial due to it's title. I guess that in itself spoke volumes. And as far as Lee Haney is concern, I still do not believe he was all natural. If he was then he should have wrote a tell all book by now giving all his "secrets" away with other demonstrators proving his formula works! Haven't seen it. I know guys that was strong as an OX lift 500lbs natural and still didn't achieve the looks of a Lee Haney. I just think they all full of it.

    I really like your videos but cant help but notice your dislike of Dorian, seems like you're discrediting his hard work and 365 days a year prep for a alsmost a decade like he just got pretty big by accident and won becacause of that. You could say that his last olympia was indeed controversial but keep in mind that only about 2-3 people knew about his injuriy of the triceps. Yes he wasnt aesthethic and yes he was absurdly massive but that's what he worked for, he never aimed to be aesthethic and i think you should give him some credit for achieving that physique with the information he had acccess to. After all, he wouldnt just win 6 controversial olympias in a row without a reason. Again, I really like your videos but I personally think you should give Dorian some credit.

      Bias "against Shawn Ray"?? I grew up in the early 90's, and was also a bodybuilder who won multiple titles. This was about as "Pro-Shawn Ray"" a video as I've ever seen. I loved Shawn Ray and Flex and Kevin ... and this video does not take away from their greatness.

    • @jawharadavid8979
      @jawharadavid8979 Рік тому +3

      @Jason Erb it was cool initially and you did show his achievements as a bodybuilder. But what I don't get is why it has to end in such a negative light on Shawn ray with regards to the video he made after the death of shawn. He didn't have to apologise if his words were put out of context and misunderstood by people. His side was only to explain what he meant with what he said. You also made fun of him calling himself as Martin Luther King of bodybuilding. If it wasn't for him none of the real issues were exposed or emphasised in the general public when everyone was just being puss and quiet. Bodybuilding is not just a sport. It's an industry. And like in any other there is politics. He just said things that no one dared to speak about. So if you really got respect as in true respect for your man right there. You should have at least a better SUMMARY to end your video . That's all I'm saying. Why demonise him towards the end

    • @LargeKoffi
      @LargeKoffi  Рік тому +2

      Thanks for the input. The goal of the video was to present the facts about Shawn’s life and provide context to not just his achievements but some of the reasons why he is strongly disliked. I personally love Shawn Ray as a bodybuilder, but can acknowledge that he has gained a rather negative reputation for himself. Whether it is warranted is completely subjective. The end of the video was put in a way that allows the viewer to form their own opinions based on what was presented in the video, you can completely disagree…but the point of the ending was to create a dialogue. Thanks for watching.
